Forty-Second Hfinl-Anniial Commencement. The semi-annual commencement of the forty second term of the Girls' Normal School, was held last evcningln the Academy of Music. The proceedings were opened with prayer by Rev. William Sterrett, D. D., followed by the reading of the Scriptures. The rest of the pro gramme consisted of vocal music, with piano accompaniment, elocution, aud essays. The diplomas were awarded by Professor George W. Fetter, Principal of the school, who in the performance of this duty complimented them for their patience, industry, and appllco cation, trusted that they would always remem ber their Alma Mater with pleasure, and those who during their attendance In the school were so anxious for their success. A barbecue, given to the Walker colored men, took place to-day on Vaux hall's Jsinnd, adjoining tho city. About 8 o'elook the chain bridge leading to tho Island was so crowded that it broke, carrying down about sixty persons. Colonel Jamcs'll. Branch, a pro minent broker and conservative caudidate for the Senate, was instantly killed, as also was Policeman KIrkland, who was striving to pre vent tho crowd from rushing on the bridge Seven colored men are fatally injured. The colored conservative barbecue, which was ended by the accident, was attended by about three hundred colored men and a large number of whites. A large crowd had congregated at the goto of the bridge leading to the Islaud, being kept off the bridge by tho police. Colonel Branch, managing the affair, while standing on the bridge, directed the police to admit tho crowd, which being done, the weight broke the structure, precipitating a number liito tho water, where Colonel Branch, Policeman Kirkham, and Robert Ashby were caught in falling tim bers and killed. Seven more were woundod, two of whom will die. Colonel Branch's body was followed to his residence by a procession of prominent citizens, and the police force, in a body, escorted Klrkham's remains home. Col.
