TITE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA TUESDAY, JUNE 15, 18G9. XiXTEIlATUIin. REVIEW OF NEW BOOKS. The fto-OMAOH at it Difkici-ltikh, hy Kir datura Jyro, M. I), rublishod by J. B. Lippincott &. Co. Thin work was originslly pvtlilishoil atxint seventeen years ago in England, and it has passed through several editions wince then. The author gives the result of bin own pro fessional experiences as to the causes of dys pepsia and other stomachic disorders, and tha diseases winch are likely to result irom mo neglect or disorganization of the internal functions of tho human system. The hints for diet and regulation of tho stomach are clear and practical, and cannot fail to be of benefit to those who will peruse them card fully and give them the attention they deserve. Tho work is written in a pleasant vein, and it i.i interspersed with professional anecdotes which makes it very amusing reading, and which servo to point the moral of tho author's discourse. Carmina Citrcis. Hy Dora Greonwell. llo ceived from J. li. Lippincott &, Co. IMissGreenwoll has taken n prominent placo mioiig the minor female poets of tho day, and liov vnvunti wlnl. fllpv ilil llfif wnnr ti nnv ffrmit. poetic heights, breathe a spirit of genuine poetry which commends them to tho attention of cultivated readers. The present volume is a collection of religious poems, which will bo perused with gratification by many. The following, although perhaps not the best, wo quote, as being a suitable length for our pur pose, and because it represents about tho average merit of the collection: ONE FIUENO. "Said a sick and louely child, 'Often have I tired of thee. Tired of all thy answers mild, Heard bo oft, so wearily; Wilt thou never tire of mo, (ieutle Patience? now look forth From our window looking north, And tell us where the others play, All this Ions, warm summer day.' " 'Love is standing in the sun, Joy and beauty at his side, Now in one their shadows run, Hope has sent an arrow wide: Mimlintr from his brow the lii;ht, Now I see hi in watch its tlii, rut.' " 'Oh ! that they would look this war, Oh! that to this quiet room Tlicy would come awhile to play ! Sec my rose-tree all in bloom. See the flowers I dried last spring; Hear my little linnet sins lu his cae ! they need not stay Longer than thev please!' tho child Patience soothed with answer mild." Tho volume is handsomely printed and bound, and it is illustrated by a number of Genuanesque designs which are not without artistic merit, but which arc not in astylo that we admire altogether. From Turner Brothers & Co. wo have received "Five Acres Too Much," by Ilobert B. Roosevelt, The aut or, after reading "Ten Acres Enough," came to the conclusion that if a Philadelphia mechanic could do so much with ten acres of poor land, a New York lawyer ought to bo ablo to produce equally gratifying results with five acres of good ground. After giving the matter what he considered a fair trial, he came to tho conclu sion that rural felicity as described in such books as "Ten Acres Enough'' is a delusion and a snare. The results of his experiences make a very amusing volume, which, however, proves prin cipally that farming was not Mr. Roosevelt's forte, and his failure to mako fivo acres pay expenses will scarcely have much weight with those who know what farming really is, and who go about it in a proper manner. Tho work is written in a serio-comic vein, which will be appreciated by many readers, and it may serve the useful purpose of preventing other amateur farmers from going into a busi ness that they do not understand, and to pro vent those already engaged in tho cultivation of ten-acre farms from making some, of the more palpable blunders that brought him to grief. Tho snme houso sends us "Tho Sacris tan's Household," by the author of "Mabel's progress," etc., an entertaining novel of Gor man life; and the second and concluding part of "He Knew lie Was Right," by Anthony Trollope. These works are published in cheap pnper-cover editions, and they are both copi ously illustrated with good designs. From Reed Meyer, No. 72'J Arch stroot, we have received the "Knights Templar March," a spirited composition in commemo ration of the semi-centennial anniversary of St. John's Commandery, No. 4, K.
