THE DAILr EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, TUESDAY, JUNE 1, 1869. 5 mUSICAL, AftP PRAMATIC. Mr. Jtmrh Jeffrrnoa m "nip Van Winkle." Mr. Joaepa Jefferson appeared last evening at the Walnut to an lmmenne audience In his great porsonn tlon of Uie vagabond Dutchman who let the world Slide by him for twenty years without taking note of time, and then awoke one fine morning utterly Unable to comprehend the fact that he wan Just twenty years bohlnd the age. If all of "Rip" proto types could leave society as he did, and slumber tinder a apoll of enchantment amid the Kaatakllln or AlleghenlcA, or any other mountains whore they wonld be out of harm's way.the wheels of civilization would not remain ungreased so long as they do sometimes, and fogylsni In some of our most respect able Institutions of science, art, and lltcraturcjwould no longer command a premium of one hundred per cent, but it would soon sink down so far below par ?alue that would cease to be quoted In the market. This, howcror, has nothing particular to do with Mr. Joffereon's personation of "Rip Van Winkle," Which is the same humorous, pathetic, and highly wrought effort of genius that It was three years ago, when It was Drat revealed to our playgoers. Mr. Jefferson has played the part so often that it has become almost a second nature to him, and he gives it with the finished ease and grace that come of long pracUoe, but with no fulling off In power and no diminution of any of the finer lights and shades of the artlstio picture, such as almost might be ex pected after so many repetitions. The crowded house that greeted Mr. Jefferson la9t evening, and the heartiness of the applause, indi cated that "Rip Van Winkle" has obtained a hold upon the public taste which cannot easily be shaken, and that his popularity is likely to continue for an in definite period. This is acknowledged on all sides to be. one of the great dramatic trlnmphs of our day ; it will be talked about fifty years hence as one of the good things such as only are bestowed upon man kind In "the happy days when we were young," aud It is on of those performances that no lover of dra matic art can afford to mlHS seeing. IHin Hunan Galton aa ".Marguerite." Miss Susan Galton's benefit last evening at the Theatre Comique attracted a very largo audience. The performance consisted of one act of Florette and; three acta of Gounod's Faast, In which Miss Galton had the valuable assistance of Messrs. Castle and Campbell, who appeared as "Faust" and "Me jphlstopheies." The production of such an opera aa Faust at this establishment has something of the comic in it, and the attempt is not to be recom mended for repetition. The want of scenic and other appliances, the limited stage-room, and other deficiencies, would, under ordinary circumstances, be likely to bring such an affair to the verge of failure. Benefits, however, are always exceptional occasions, when everything la allowable, and when the largest charity is evoked to cover the most glaring artistic deficiencies. As this was almost the only opportunity Mlas Galton could have to show her ability to cope with a first-class role, we are glad that she determined to appear last evening as "Marguerite." Making all due allow ances for discouraging circumstances, the persona tion was one that can be Bpoken of In high terms of praise. The role is one that is very seldom given in ri rat-rate style, and some of the best singers that have undertaken it have been unable to express all that there is in it of innocence, passion, and terrible despair. Miss Galton sang with much sweetness and native grace, but much of the music is a little beyond the range of her vocal culture. Her acting, although she labored under great disadvantages last evening, was full of tine feeling and real sentiment, and she appeared to have a better appreciation of all the requirments of the role than almost any ar tist that has appeared In it of late ; and we believe that with a little careful training, and under circum stances that would permit a full development of her power she would make one of the best "Marguerites'' on the stage Miss Galton is a thorough artist In spirit; she works hard for success, and we would be very glad if she could appear with a thoroughly competent support and under such circumstances as would allow her to attempt In first-rate role and give her powers full play. The City Amuement. At Tint Academy op Music Miss Clara Louise Kellogg will appear to-morrow evening In a grand concert, under the direction of Max Strakosch. Miss Kellogg will be assisted by Mad'lle Alide Topp, Sig norl Boettl, Reina, Suslnl, Ilartll, and Mr. Rudolph Hennlg. Selections from Rossini's Mesne isolonnetle will be performed, with other choice selections. Six new pieces, never given before in this city, will be performed. On Thursday 11 Bnrbiere tU Seviglia will be pre sented, and on Saturday there will be a grand operatic matinee. Seats can be secured at the Academy aud at Trumpler's. At this Arch Mr. John Collins will appear this evening in the drama of The Soldier 0 Fortune and the farce of His Last Leys. The performance will conclude with the farce of Sarah's l'ouna Man, On Monday next a new drama, by Wilkie Collins and Charles Fechter, entitled Black and White, will be produced. Report speaks very highly of tills piece, which will be placed upon the staire with great care. At tub Walnut Mr. Joseph Jefferson will appeur this evening as "Rip Van Winkle." At thk Chkhnut the burlesque of The Jmlnnetit cJ'aris will be pertormed this evening, and William H. Donaldson and II. Gilbert will make a veloci pede ascension on the tight rope from the stage to the gallery. At tuk TnKATKK Comiqub Miss Susan Galton will appear this evening In Florette the Cricket. At thk Amkhican the De Lave sisters, not having proved themselves first-rute artists In the opinion o the management, have been withdrawn. This even ing an attractive variety programme will be pre vented, which will combine a great number of enter taining features. At thk t'HKSNCT Street Rink a grand velocipede ?arnlvul aud masquerade will come off this evening. . CITIT ITEMS. Men's, Youth's, and Boys' Spring Cwrrrrya.
