THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY, MAY 27, 1869. 5 H1LNI1MI. AH1 IHlAniTll. "Hlld" m the Wnlnot. Lost evening Mr. K. L. Davenport produced a new drama fntitled Hilda; or, The Pearl of Cnwa'r:, which ha been adapted from a French piece, esllod Cadet la Yrfc, by Messrs. I, R. Hhewell an 1 V. Wil liams. This Is a melodramatic- plavof tha old fashioned sort. The plot Is an adaptation of a ro mantic story of the New York Ledger type, and the piece depends for success upon spirited and artlstlo acting rather than upon the Ingenuity of the suite carpenter or machinist. The piece Is an cxoe'.lent one of its kind, and It Is or a kind that lovers or the drama will be loth to lose. It Is in Just such plays that some of the best actors on the stage have achieved the greatest success, and this particular drama furnishes Mr. Davenport with a singularly fine role that is admirably suited to his forcible but elegant style or acting. Indeed, there H no actor In tho country that can approach this gentleman in the better class or melodramas; and such parts as "Henri de Iorralne" he plays with a breadth and rreedom adapted to the subject, but with a vigor of expression that is doubly effective from the total absence of rant or vulgarity, ami which raises the character to the rank of a dramatic creation. The story told in tho play of Hilda is romantic, rather than sensational, In the modern acceptation of the term. "Henri de Lorraine" the Coinpto d'Harcourt, loves "liiicia," tne daughter of a burgher. He is wounded in battle and by chance is carried to her home, when the physician asserts that his only chance for life is the infusion of frosh blood into his ezhaustod veins. "Hilda" offers herself, and her lover's life is saved almost at the expense of her own. He is made to believe that she is dead, and we next find him the leader of a band of revellers in a low cabaret in Paris, striving to drown the remom- branoes of the past in dissipation. The Cardinal Illchclteu, however, designs an alliance between "Henri" and his niece, the "Duchesscde Puylaurens,' but the lady having Informed herself or his habits, wishes to decline the proposed match, add a meet ing between "Hilda" and her lover, which acciden tally takes place in the Cardinal's ante-room, Induces her to take the girl under her protection and to bring about a reunion. "Henri" is made commander or the army, and achieves a great victory, which se cures him the gratitude and favor of the King and Cardinal. The "Duchess," however, finds that she la in love with "Henri" herself, and the subsequent events turn upon the imprisonment or "Hilda" in a convent at her instance, her rescuo by "Henri," the various plots and counterplots which the policy or the Cardinal and his niece put in action for the ac complishment of their purpose, and the final reunion or the lovers. Some or the situations in the play are remarkably effective, although, rrom the rather careless manner in which it was performed last evening, they did not make the same impression that they would if worked up In proper style. Scarcely one of the actors knew their lines, and Mr. Davenport himself required the assistance of the prompter rather fre quently. Making all due allowance for the difficul ties of a first night and hasty preparation, the play was not given in the style that it should have been. This is to be regretted, as the piece is a good one : rar better than the majority of those which the pub lic are Invited to patronize, and with reasonably good acting it could bo made strlkiugly effective. To the general inefficiency of the support we must except Mrs. Walcot, who gave an admirable persona tion of the heroine, and Mr. Walcot, who acted the part of a Falstaftinn poetaster with much ability. These artists are entitled to considerable credit, for while other members of the Walnut Street Compnny are too often careless ana inattentive to tne artistic re quirements of their profession, Mr. and Mrs. Wal cot almost invariably act well, and even in parts not suited to them they at least try to act In this connection it may not be out or place to mention that some weeks ago we received a note rrom one or the ladies or this theatre, complaining that wo failed to notice her efforts. It is certainly an un gracious task to find rault with the actors under any circumstances, but habitual rault-llnding would be unpleasant ror all parties concerned ; and tho news paper that would always speak the whole truth in matters of this kind would get the credit of being hypercritical, harsh, and ungenerous. There is not a "paper in this city that does not pass over a great leal of execrably bad acting in silence, especially in cases where there does not appear to be any hope of effecting a reform. If we charitably say nothing, certainly no member or the proreBslon has a right to complain, aiul moae wuu are uiuuitiuua iu uumiu praise ought to do something to deserve it. The drama of Hilda will probably work smoother this evening than it did yesterday, and we commend it to the attention or our play-goers. Mr. Davenport Is an actor who deserves well or the public, and he ought to draw better houses than he has yet done during his present engagement. The City Amusements. At tub Walnut Mr. E. L.
