TIIE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, WEDNESDAY, MAY 26, 1869. MUSICAL, ANI IIt 11 VTIC nurlrwine at the OiMnnt. Something has been Raid by nearly all the papers Of this city about certain not altogether commend able features connected with the performances of th hnrlpaniiA Imnmi ... ,v. e. . ... . i - i"- rc nin vucnuui. ii i io ie I 1"'PC(J. however, that no confederations of severe propriety will prevent anyone from visiting these entertainments, for any young man or woman whose morals could possibly smrer would have no morals worth speaking of to begin with. It Is the first re qnlslte for the success of gilded sin that It shall be smuslng, that It shall present attractions superior to those held out by decency and godliness. When the Devil begins to be a bore we Immediately vote him to be a very disreputable character, and Incontinently tick him out of doors. To say that the new bur lesque entitled 1'arw, or the jmUimrnt, which ha been brought out this week at the Chesnut by the Ellse Holt Troupe, Is stupid, would not do It Just ice, or adequately represent the facts of the case ; It is solemn, and. with nil due rmriinl for I the seriousness of the subject, we have no hesitation Ijc declaring that a good lively prayer-meeting Is a 1 better entertainment, and even far more funny. looking at the matter merely from a jocular point of view. Dr. Franklin had a recipe by which a restless would-be slurabercr might Induce repose. This was to Imagine a flock of sheep jumping one after the other over a gate, and to count them as they went over. A more certain method than this for producing somnolence would be to try and keep the run of the puns and jokes in this burlesque In an effort to under stand them, and see where the laugh came In. This Is not altogether such a bad idea, as the sleeper might wake up at the fall of the curtain and imagine that lie had been well entertained, anil he certulnly could not persuade himself Into any such belief if he kept his eyes and ears open. We have seldom seen a more appreciative audience In any place of amusement than there was at the Chesnut last evening. Row after row they sat and faced the performers, determined to see the thing through at all hazards. On tho stage the facile legs wriggled, and blondes grimaced with a certain solemnity of demeanor, as If they fully appreciated the ponderous character of the work they had in hand. Some of the hymns ahem ! we mean the classic, songs such as "Captain Jinks" and "Unpolished Feminine," awoke responsive echoes of applause from the back benches, bnt for the most part a serene silence reigned in the auditorium. The golden haired Britons called in vain upon our national heroes from Washington to Grant, but not even one patriotic youth in the gallery was to be found to do them honor in such a connection. A complimentary notice of Butler ami his spoons failed to excite any sympathetic response and a mention of Andy Johnson even was answered by nothing more than a sardonic snicker. The per formance was not even agreeably nasty ; there was not quite as much undress on the part of the female performers as was noticeable last week ; it was not flavored with such gums of song as "ltolllcking Bams," "Cheekty Little Cove," and others of similar character, and the idiotic dreariness of the whole affair appeared to affect the actors as much as It did the audience. It Is possible to have too much even of a good thing, and the signs of the times seems to Indi cate that classic burlesques and yellow-haired Eng lish blondes have had their day. It Is to be hoped that the next freak of public taste will be for some thing of a little higher grade. Of such performances as Paris; or, Tht Judgment, we have certainly had quantum nvff. Thk Vital Statistics ok thk Unitkd Stati h show that periodical fovprn and aotite and chronic disorders of the atomach and bowcla are among: the mowt prominent and fiitnl disoaacs in this country. Disobedience to the laws of health, an regards diot ; the uao of pemicioua stim ulant; and the wcur and teur of business excitement, and of "font life" generally, have much to do with the preva lence of these maladies in our cities; while in the West, and especially in the newly-opened districts, tbey are chiefly due to malaria, unwholesome water, and the expo sure and privation incident to life in new settlements. Now, IT IX A FACT that it is as possible to protect Hie human system against these raaladiea as to guard life and property against the incursions of assassins and thieves. Strengthen the vitjil organization with Hohtktteh'b Sto mach Rittkrr, and it becomes as capable of resisting the active principle of epidemic or endemic disease aa a fire proof safe is of resisting the action of combustion. Tliis ia tho experience of thousands who have remained un scathed by malarious disorders in tho sickliest seasons, whilo their neighbors, who neglected to tone and regulate their systems with this unequalled medicinal stimulant, have fallen thick and fast around them. Weakness invites disease. Vigor repels it.
