THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, TUESDAY, MAY 25, 1869. 5 Mr. John Collin at the Arch. Mr. John Collins, the popular IrlHh comedian unci Vocalist, who hM been making a tour of the world since he appeared here several years ago, received a cordial welcome back to Philadelphia last evening at the Arch Street Theatre, where he commenced an engagement with the lively comedy of Tht IrUh A m touuador and the rattling farce of Hon to Pay the lien: Mr. Collins Is one of the very few representatives now on the stage of a line of Irish characters that we would be loth to lose. That burlesque on hu manity, tho Irish peasant of whom Barney Williams la the chief representative, has almost succeeded In driving the Irish gentlemen of Tyrone Power from the stage. John Brougham hiis nearly ceased play ing this Line of parts, and Mr. Collins, therefore, has scarcely a rival In the Held. The lrih AmbaHatlor Is a very elegant and very amusing comedy, and How to Pay the Kent Is a capital farce. The characters of '8lr Patrick O'Plenipo" and "Morgan Rattler" In these pieces afforded Mr. Collins excellent oppor tunities to win the regards of his audience, and his performance last evening was heartily applauded throughout. Mr. Collins was admirably supported by the Arch Street Company, and we cau promise those who visit the theatre during his engagement a series of performances that will be remembered with pleasure In the future. "Flarptte" at th Theatre Continue. Last evening, Florette the Cricket was produced at the Theatre Comlque, according to announcement, to a large audience. The good Impression made by the rehearsal of the ptece on Saturday afternoon was more than confirmed by the performance, which Is decidedly in advance of anything that the Galton troupe has yet given In this city. The adaptation is exceedingly well done, and the music which has been chosen to Illustrate the story Is of a high grade, and yet well suited to catch the popular ear. The drama of Fanchon, with which all play-goers arc familiar, is a perfect gem in Its way, and with a competent performer In the part of the "Cricket," It cannot fail to secure the sympathies and applause of an audience. The character is admi rably suited to Miss Susan Galton, and her acting and singing last evening received the heartiest re cognition. Not having seen Maggie Mitchell, Mi Galton performs the part in her own way, without being trammelled by preconceived notions. She misses some of the peculiar elflshness that distin guishes Maggie Mitchell's acting, particularly In the shadow scene, but this Is compensated for by the line sentiment, the tciMtcrncss of feeling aud warm-heartedness that underlie the rough exterior of the little witch girl, and simply as a dra matic performance her "Florette" will be entitled to take a high rank. V-ss Galton appeared to be a little nervous laHt evening, which detracted slightly from the force of her acting and singing, but as she becomes familiar with the part this will disappear, and she will render the role with a vivacity and sparkle that will be sure to tell with her audience. Florette has been nicely put upon the stage, and the support is decidedly better than it has been here tofore. The troupe has an excellent basso In Mr. Clark, and a couple of good tenors In Mr. Kelleher and Mr. Gran". These gentlemen have all something to learn about the art of acting, but they appear to bo learning; and Mr. Clark especially, who hitherto has not acted at all, la.it evening, as "Father Bar baud," gave evidence that he Is gaining some ideas on the subject which promise good results If he will only take pains to improve. Miss Blanche Galton acted the part of "Mother Fadef admirably ; but Mr. Whiilin was rather too demonstrative as Didier," ami although at times he acted with much force and expression, his performance was careless, and he can ccrtaiuly do better if he chooses to make the effort. There were some Inequalities last evening sach as are Incident to a tirst performance, which will wear off in a night or two; but the piece was a success, and it ought to have a good run. Th City Amusement. At Tim Walnut Mr. E. L. Davenport will appear tUiH evening as "Rover" in the sparkling comedy of Wild Oat, and as "William" in the drama of Lku-k-y.urd wan. To-morrow evening a new drama, entitled Hilda, or The Pearl of Chivalry, will he produced. On Monday next Mr. Joseph Jeil'erson will com mence an engagement. At thk Akc u Mr. Collins will appear this evening as "Sir Patrick O'Plenipo" in The IrUh Ambaxxador, end as "Morgan Rattler" in How to Pay the Jieiit. At tiik Chksnut the Ellse Holt troupe will appear this evening in the new burlesque entitled The Judy, htevt of Pari. AT THK Thkatre C'Omiqub Florette tht CrU-ket will be performed this evening. On Monday next Miss Susan Galton will have a complimentary benefit, when an attractive bill will be presented. At thk Amkkican Joe Emmett, the Dutch come dian, Master Clarence, tho child performer on the trapeze, and a host of other artists, will appear this evening In a variety entertainment. Mas. F. Mokuafnt's benefit, to take place next Saturday afternoon at tho Academy of Music-, pro- mlses to be a brilliant affair. The Arch street Thea tre company will appear in Mr. Craig's burlesque of Jlarbe. Jllene, tho comedietta of A hay After the Wed ding, and the farce of Family Jam, in which last piece Mrs. Mordaunt will sustain one of the leading characters. Other favorite performers will lend their assistance to make the affair a success. "At thk CHEMNtr Strekt Rink the fifth grand pri.e velocipede exhibition will be held this evening. A contest will take place for the gokl medal and cham pionship of Philadelphia; also for the silver medal for the champion boy rider. A valuable present wil be given to the best little girl rider nnderten years of age, and to the fastest boy rider in the double race. The velocipedrome has become a very popular insti tution, and the exhibitions heretofore given have always attracted immense audiences. - Mrs. Frances Annb Kemhlk will read Shake speare's exquisite comedy of A Yon Like It to-morrow evening at the Academy of Masic, for the bene fit of the Mercantile Library building fund. We hope that the Library will realize ha ml Home sum from this entertainment. Phokkhsor James McClintook, M. P., will lecture this evening at Concert iUll on the "Nervous Sys tem," etc B.Mihu Anna E. Dickikson will deliver her first lecture on woman's suffrage, under the title of "Nothing Unreasonable," at the Academy of Music, on Mondav evening next. This will be Miss Dickin son's last appearance In this city previous to her departure for California. The sale of seats will com mence on Fritlay morning at Gould s, No. i3 Ches nut street.
