THE DAILY E Q TELEGRAPH PIIILADELPIUA, TUESDAY, MAY 18, 1869. IHU8ICAI, AflfP IHAItlATlC. Mr. Mid Mm. Watklnn at the Walnut. Last evening Mr. and Mm. Harry Watklns ap peared to a fair audience in a new Irish dMtna written by Mr. Watklns, and entitled Trodden Doum; tr, Vndtr 3Vo Flag. This piece, In Its general char acteristic, closely resembles most of the patriotic Irish dramas, with which the publlo are well ac quainted. With a keen appreciation, however, of what U most admired In works of this class, Mr. Watklns has taken care to cram the play with Inci dental and effects of tho most hlfrhly-splced descrip tion, and, judging it by the qualities which take best with the admirers of the Irish drama, it may be pro nounced a first-rate work of its kind. Each act ends with a terrific tableau, and, after the fashion of the story papers, leaves the hero as well as the audience In an agonizing state of suspense, thus keeping alive the interest in a most effectual manner. The acting of Mr. Watklns tends too much to "sound and fury, signifying nothing," but an Irish drama without plenty of sound and fury would not te in character, and as the audience appeared to ap preciate Mr. Watklns' acting very highly, there Is no particular occasion for us to complain. Mrs. Watklns, who Is by far the better artist of the two, acts with much real expression, and sings a number of ballads with taste and feeling. TTie City Amusement. At THS Acadbmt op Mobio A A'ight in Oranidt was performed last evening to a slim audience This work is one that will have to be beard frequently to le properly appreciated, and it Is not likely under any circumstances to be very popular. The Instru mentation throughout is very fine, but there is a great deal of recitative which is uninteresting ex cept to scientific musicians, and the general effect is anything but enlivening. The opera, however, con tains several beautiful airs and concerted pieces, for the sake of which we would be glad to see It more frequently produced. The performance last evening was very croditahJ-e, and Miss Edith Abell and Mr, Campbell, who isnstalned the leading rolts of "The Hunter" and "Gabrielle," acquitted themselves to the satisfaction of the audience. This evening II Trovatort will be performed for the benefit of Mr. Alfred Stlmmell, the popular door keeper of the Academy. Our opera-goers should see that Mr. St'immell has a full house. To-morrow Mr. J. F. Zimmerman, the treasurer of the troupe, will have a benefit, when Fauxt will be performed, with Miss Abell as "Marguerite." Mrs. Bernard will have a farewell benefit on Fir- day, for which occasion Traviata is announced. At thr Walnut Mr. and Mrs. Watklns will appear this evening in their Irish drama of Trodden Down. At ths Cbrsnct the Ellse Holt Troupe will appear this evening In the burlesque of Lttaetia Borgia, M. D. At thk Arch RosedaU will be performed this .evening. On Thursday Mr. L. L. James will have a benefit, when Cat and Ireland as It Wan will be given Mr. Craig's benefit Is announced for Friday. On Monday, Mr. John Collins, the popular Irish comedian and vocalist, will commence an engage jnent Mr. Collins has always been a favorite in this city, and as he has not appeared here for several years he will doubtless receive a cordial welcome At thk Thkatrb Comiqtjb Miss Susan Ualton will appear this evening In Punchinello and A Jiainy Day. On Friday Mr. Thomas Whltlln will have a benefit, When Ching Chow Ui and Jeanettt's Wedding will be performed, The Press this morning contained the following: "On Monday evening last Miss Hasan Gallon sang 'Ar- line' in tne The Jinhmian titrl, at the Philadelphia Aca The attempt was not altogether success- lul, M iss ualton 8 T( ing." A. r. Timet. What may have been the Influences used to secure tne publication or tne above item in the New York Times we do not know, bnt that it is unkind, untrue. and unjust all of the immense audience present at tne Academy or jhubic on Monday evening, May 10, will testify. It is well to mention here that, although the dally journals of "the metropolis" pay great attention to musical dramatic matters, the para graph quoted is the only one which has appeared in any newspaper of that city in reference to the won derful performance of Miss Galton on that occasion. Again, although these newspapers do not think, it beneath them to speak of the doings at the Philadel phia theatres, they have seldom mentioned the name of Miss Oalton, and never without a slur. The reason is simply that, during the lady's short en gagement in New York city, tho critics failed to dis cover her talent and powers, and now are not in clined to accept the almost unanimous decision of those of Philadelphia, preferring rather to do in justice to one of the very best prime donne on the American stage. It Is unnecessary to repeat that Miss (lalton's voice did fill the Academy of Music, and that the performance was one of the most suc cessful ever given in this or any other city, even Including the great New York. It is probable that she may again visit the "metropolis," and wo feel sure that once on the boards of one of Its great thea tres, well supported, she will force from the writers the truth, and compel them to agree that she is all that we of this sity have declared her to be, and that Kellogg, Rosa, and others will have to look well to their laurels, or the little English girl will become the true favorite of the people. However gratifying the extravagant laudation of the Press may be to Miss Susan Gal ton's vanity, her common sense must revolt at it; and while our con temporary is evidently anxious to serve the young lady, it is doing her a great and positive injury. Miss Jalton Is one of the most attractive actress singers we have had In this city for a long time, and her merits In the light operettas of Offenbach and Levy, as well as in works of a higher class, have been fully acknowledged by the papers of Philadelphia. Miss Galton, however, did not make a success at the Academy of Music; and the most that can be said of her performance is, that it is an open question whether she Is able to sing in so large a house. Miss Galton has neither the voice nor culture of Miss Kellogg, and a comparison with Madame Rosa is too absurd to be even thought of. Miss Galton got into trouble once before through the extravagant praise of ill-advised friends, and her disastrous season at the Cheanut should be a lesson not only to her and her managers, but to those critics who are inclined to allow their enthu siasm and personal partiality to run away with their iudament. There Is nothing but the most kindly feeling in this city towards Miss Ualton, and we cor. .dlally wish her all possible success, bnt those who desire to assist her on the road to fume and fortune tan do so much more effectually by keeping within the bounds of legitimate criticism. Atthi America a variety of attractions will be offered this evening. Prop. J. McCmntock, M. D., will deliver the se cond lecture of his course this evening at Concei t Hull Bublect: "Muscles, or ncsn oi uieouciy; ur- ronffpment. functions and diseases ; circulation of the Mn- heart, arteries, and veins," with explanation r thnir functions and diseases. a rjNi.
