TIIE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY, MAY 13, 18G9. MUSICAL AI1 nA!lATlC. Ell Holt nnrlrnqtio Troupe at the Clieaniit. Tho theatres of the country are now being over ran by a grand army of EngllBh blondes, who treat the public to what In the fasklon of the hour Is termed burlesque, but which means as lavish a display of the female person as a liberal construction of the laws against Indecent exposure will permit. Tho Much-abused Jilack Crook, and tho freedom of style Which, in the case of ToHtec and other French boufe artists, excited bo much Indication in certain quar ters, were nothing to tho latest developments of tho English burlesque. The worst of it is, that this style Cf performance has nothing of the grace and elegance Of the lilaek Crook and White Fawn ballets, nothing of the real artistic merit of the njtera bouff'c as Interpreted by the Parisian actors, but it is distinguished by a Vulgarity that is essentially Knglish. Of English burlesque we have had enough and to spare tf late, and we hhull not be sorry to see a change in the public taste that will make such exhibitions as that given at the Chesnut last evening no longer profitable to managers. The so-called burlesques of Byron and other London writers arc not usually 'on Subjects that the people on this Bide of the Atlantic Cither know or care anything about, and their success depends entirely on a forced adaptation to American tastes by the introduction of local gags and on thewrlg- Rllng, kicking, smirking, and extravagant contortions Cf undressed women. The burlesque troupe which left the Chesnut a fortnight ago succeeded because the entertainment presented a variety of amusing features which wero entirely independent of the sub ject of the burlesque proper, and because of the Strong combination of excellent performers. They, however, kept within the bounds of decency, and there was nothing particularly objectionable in any thing Bald or done. Lvcretia llorgia, M. D., the piece which wa produced last evening, is about on a par with Mr. IJyrou's other ell'orts In the same line; It la full of puns, some good and some bad, and a fair proportion of Jokes and local hits Which the audience can appreciate ivlthout any great mental cirort, but there is not a single really comic situation Iti the piece except such as are ere Btcd by the actors themselves. Miss Eliao Holt, the leader of the band, is good looking, neatly built.wlth a fair singing voice, a fasci nating smile that approaches a grin, and a style of acting that approaches close upon the borders of in decency In manner and language. Miss Holt is in many respects the most lively and taking of tho blonde Interpreters of burlesque that wo have had liere, but her very free style, and vulgar Jests and low songs, are not at all nice. Miss Holt has a good Support In Mr. James Lewis as "Lucretla Borgia.'' Mr. James Carleton as "llustlghello," Mr. Harry IVall as "The Dook," Mr. E. Eberle as "Juuctta," and Misses E. Weathersby, Lillle Eldrldge, Bella Bowltt, 'and Ella Spencer, who personate four frolicsome young gentlemen, and display four pairs of pink legs for the delectation of the intelligent public. The performance last evening commenced with a piece called The fool of the family, which would nave been simply stupid had not Miss llowitt's acting . made It coarse. If the publie like this sort of thing they will give It their patronage; but, as we said yesterday, this is not burlesque in any proper sense of the term, and even If it were, there Is such a thing as having too much oven of a good thing, and the . so-called burlesque performances appear to be now approaching a point where they ought to be dis countenanced. The City Amuiwnienf. AT TDK Academy of Music Auber's opera of fra Diavolo will be performed this evening. To-morrow Mr. Castle will have a benefit, when Traviata will be given. At TDK Walnut Mr. John Brougham will appear this evening as "Shylock," in his burlesque of Much Ado About a Merchant of Venice. The -domestic drama of The Veep-Show Man will be given as an afterpiece. To-morrow evening Mr. Brougham will kave a fare well benefit, previous to his departure for California. At tub Ahch Lotta will appear in t'epina, for the last time, this evening. To-morrow evening Lotta will have a farewell benellt, and will appear In a drama entitled The t'e male Detective. On Monday Mr. Barton ntll will have a farewell . benefit, when Hoxedale will be performed. At the Chesnut the Elsie Holt burlesque troupe Will appear this evening in Lucrctxa llorgia, la Qrana Doctrest. At tiik Tijkatre Comiqub a new opera, by Levy, entitled Punchinello, will be presented this evening, with Miss Susan Ualton, Mr. A. Kelleher, and Mr. J. Clarke In the principal parts. The performance will conclude with Leu Deux A veuglex. At Tnn Amkkicak a number of talented artisU will nnnear this evenimr In a variety entertainment. Tub Nkw Vokk Cikcuh, with Its corps of first-class eerformcrs. its lurso collection or trained annuals, and the variety of attractions which It oilers, is doing a rush nor bus mess on Elirntn street, auove itaee This establishment will only remain until the end of next week. Performances this afternoon and even- in ir. Professor James McCmntock, M. D., will, on Monday evening. May 17, commence a series of lee turcs at Concert Hall on anatomy, physiology, etc., that promise to ie iotn interest msr ana instructive.
