THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, SATURDAY, MAY 8, I860." 5 the u. s. MARSH ALSIIir. ' f- r-b"c .KAi.d,',T?tc!1 kfrom w"lfrton annonnpps that the lTwldimt has appointed Unncral Edgar M. Ore- ?;!rLt0.thlIVmtl(m 01 u- s- Marshal for tno Kti-rn iHtrlct of thla.stiito, rincncral John Klj, deceased, onthe lrt of January, 1804, K iirar M. Oregonr was L)r?w Hand I'. KonsHeluor county, New Vork. At the ajre of eiglitt-een, ho removed to Dr.po.ilt, l)laware county, in the same State, and f njrairml In the lumber business, a vocation he followed formn.T years, Ho was ever of a devout turn of mind, at the iiffo of thirty bolnK an elder In the 1'renhytorlan Church. In 1840 he wound up his business at Do posit, relinquished his position as commander of a rt!(rlmoiit of Htato inilltla, and moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. There ho pursued the culling; of a banker, In addition to his older one of lumber merchant. Mill taking a deep Interest In all matters portalnlnn to the Church, the Hunday School, and benellcent enter prises. He soon became the President of tho Young Wen's Illble Society of Cincinnati, which post he retained for sixteen years. Ho was one of the early foes of the iUHlitutiou of slavery. Ho termod It the curse of the land, and predicted that If It was per mitted to live war would be lis result In lMtlo ho 1'nme to this city, and at the breaking out of the Re bellion took an active part in promoting enlistments, devoting most of his time and energies to aiding the cause of freedom awl Union. At llrst he ldcnund himself with the Home (luard organization of this city, and became Captain of Company A, Junior Home Guards, of the Thirteenth ward. Shortly after the organization of tills body, It was proposed to raise a regiment for field service out of our Home Guard. The idea at once became popular, Captain Gregory being among the first to respond. Its or ganization was started, Captain Gregory was chosen Colonel, and obtained authority direct from the Secre tary of War to proceed at once In Its formation. It was the VlHt 1'enuBylvanla Volunteers. On the 81st of January, iwtf, the regiment, numbering nearly 1000 men, left the city for the seat of war. On reach ing Washington, however, It was there detained to act as provost guard of that city, relieving the 4tn Regular United States lu fan try. In a brier time Colonel Gregory was ordered to Alexandria, Va., to act as military governor, whlch position be filled with dlguity, firmness, and success. During the time of bis olllce there he never relinquished the command and management of bis regiment and Its affairs. When relieved from duty as military governor, til -i conduct in the field was equally admirable, always ready In any emergency to lead his men, and sharj their dangers. His gallantry at the battle of Frede ricksburg filled his men with so much confidence an 1 stecm, that they presented blm with a fine borsu and a magnificent sword, as a token of their appre ciation of his merits. His honorable and gallant deeds having been brought before the President by prominent army officers, the well-earned rank of brigadier-general was conferred on him as a reward. He has twice been wounded In battle. He brings to his new position of United States Marshal just such experience as fits blm to perform its duties with Kuccess. ' Chick rhino A Sons The Onb Frick Systkm We recognize tn the recent action of Chickcring & Sons a movement In the right direction. By close calculation they have made out a price list In which their pianos are marked at the exact price for which they can be sold, and from that price no deduction will be made. Hitherto almost every purchaser expected even the most celebrated dealers to "knock down" from ten t twenty per cent, on the catalogue prices, and, having succeeded, they left, delighted with the bar gain they had made; while the fact is that they merely got off wbat the dealer put on to enable him to flatter the buyer with a large discount. It was a game of brag, played every day in a thousand stores in this city but one In which neither party really gained or lost. Still, the system was demoralizing both to the buyer and seller, for they unnecessarily appeared In the unenviable characters of the sharp and the sharper. Chlckering Sons, with their reputation and wealth, won by forty-seven years of honorable and successful business life, con afford to take this stand, without the risk of being accused of selling "cheap" pianos. The superiority of their instruments is vouched for by the testimony of all the great pianists, by a hundred first-class medals, and by Orders of Distinction from foreign conrts, and by the more im portant evidence offered by the thirty-four ttunutatid Chlckering pianos now in use In this country. The Instruments will be made as perfect as ever. The change will only be in the price, and that change Is entirely In the benefit of the purchasing public. , fir York Commercial Advertixei: CITY lTIUlM. STVXE. Mohamed, famous in both hemispheres for nis encouragement ol tne arts ana sciences, ana ever anxious to piomote the welfare of the people, was take, by surprise st the wonderful knowledge displayed by th. unlettered Doctor. He not only immediately sea Cheopsus at liberty, but placed him under the oars of the celebrated Raaohid, the principal Profossor of Medioin. of the school Mir.ra, at Cairo, liore, after several years of attention and laborious study, with nis quick, active mind, and almost inherent power ot comparison, he bad mastereai all the mystone. and secrets of the healing art known te the Kofaa of the College. In the acme of his fame and great reputation, he was speoially deputed by his benefactor and friend, the Vioeroy Mohamed Ali, to undertake a journey to the nnea. plored regions of Upper Kgypt, with tiie view of discover ing some plant possessing the medicinal qualities to cur. the dangerous maladies prevailing among the people usu ally after the vernal equinox. Alter procuring large quantities of this truly preoioua weed, and its rapid growth hr transplantation in tiie culti vated valleys ot the lower Nile, the preparation of the famous touio, the Z1NGARI MTTKR.S, was coramenoed and given to the public. Its effect was miraculous, and se much did the sanitary condition of the people of Oair. improve, that fjbeopsus was honored and esteemed by na tives and foreigners as a publio benefactor. Honors and presents were showered upon biin. The Vioeroy, as a toko, of his regard for Cheopsus, and as an acknowledgment of great services, deooratmt him with the imperial orders of Ismaeland Kalartin. The .Sultan of Turkey, as well as th. Imauinnf Muscat, invited Cheopsus, who was now called the Kofa a Mir.roitn (the Doctor of Kgypt), to their courts, and received hitn with the most distinguished consideration.
