THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, MONDAY APRIL 10, 180D. 5 MUSICAL AJjiDDBAMATlC. "Fleur de The," On Satnrday evening Mr. Graa produced the third novelty of the wiwon, Lecocq's opera of Fleur de The, This I the weakest of any of the burlesque opera that have been performed here, and It Is as tnuch below Offenbach's works In musical merit a llcrvc's X.' (Fit Crew Is above them. According to the statement on the programme of the evening, fffur de The achieved an extraordinary BUCceHS In Europe, enjoying two long runs In Paris, besides creating an "unprecedented furore'' In the principal capitals of Northern Kuropo where It was repre sented. The Farlslanfj must certainly have been pining for a novelty, or else were able to see attractive feature In the work which are Invisible to us. The libretto of tleur tie The is well written, and the subject is a good one for the purpose of a musical burlesque. The plot, such as It Is, turns upon the misadventure of "Plnsonnet," the cook of a French man-of-war lying off Pekln, who, with his wife "Cesarine," carries on quite a profitable trade In a cabaret which they have established on shore. Unfortunately for "Pln aonnet" his place Is visited by "Kleur de The,' the daughter of "Tlen-Tlen," a mandarin and chief of the Pekin police, who, being desirous of seeing for herself what the outside barbarians were like, eluded the vigilance of her guardians, and started on a little expedition In search or knowledge. The sudden entrance of thn mandarin forces her to hide. In an adjoining 'apartment, where sh,e Is discovered by "Cesarine," whose Jealous Wrath is aroused, and the girl Is forced to face her Indignant parent. 'Tlen-Tlen" declares that, ac cording to the Chinese law, a stronger who beholds the face of an unmarried woman must either accept her as his wife or be impaled, and "Plnsonnet" Is accordingly seized and carried off to his palace. The rest of the piece is taken up with the complications caused by tho unlucky affair, and by tho Jealousy of "Cesarine," who succeeds In substituting herself In disguise for "Fleur de The" at the murrlage cere mony, while the Chinese girl Is made hsppy in the arms of her original lover, "Kaolin," the captain of the Tigers, whose matrimonial prospects were nipped In the bud by tho accident which gave him the French cook for a rival. When the trick played by "Cesarine" Is discovered, the mandarin proposes to carry out the law by im paling "Plnsonnet," preparatory to which he and his followers get intoxicated on champagne which "Cesa rine" furnishes them, and the opera concludes with the only really good thing in it a lively champagne chorus, in the midst of which the French sailors jmsh In and rescue their conntryman. To an audience who understood the language this piece might be amusing, as a mere burlesque, but to those who consider the music as the most important part of the performance, there Is nothing to specially commend It. Most of the airs are quite pretty, and that is the best that can be said of them, and us we remarked above, the best thing in it is the Jolly bacchanalian chorus with which it concludes. Mad'lle Desclauzas acted and sang the part of "Cesarine" excellently, and M. Beckers as "Tien. Tien" and M. Francis as "Kaolin" performed in first-rate burlesque style. M. Currier, who does not appear to be much of an actor, sang well enough as 'V'lnsonnet," but otherwise he fell far below any of the artists who have appeared here in leading role, and Mad'lle Hlzarellt, who appeared as "Fleur de The," added nothing to the strength of the cast. The costumes were very handsome, but, with the excep tion of the first scene, the nsual Academy scenery was used, and as this was entirely inappropriate, the performance was not as effective as it would have been IX properly mounted. The CltT Amusements. At the Ac adkmy of Music Mr. (J rau's troupe will appear this evening in a new opera of Offenbach, La Vie I'arUienne. The cast will Include all the principal artists.
