PENNSYLVANIA LEGISLATURE. Thr Clerk. The pleased appearance of Mr. J. L. Selfrltlgo -when lio received the "gold ring" from the Pages of the House. The Sprnkrr. Mr. Speaker Clark receives a "vote of thanks" Jrom the Houbc. He has it photographed. The Member from Philadelphia reads over some of the measures he voted for, under such seductive titles as "Au Act nmenda tory to an Act relative to the carrying trade on the State highways, for the. better regulation of the same, etc.'' lie KelleetH, and finds out on further reflection that, although largely interested in the Forwarding Business on Broad street, he has voted for the tearing up of the rails on that street, including the turnout that leads into his own warehouse. "Adlourned." 7 II M lie waxes warm in his indignation and ad journs any further action at present. His only hope is to get back to the Legislature the next session, so he can help to undo all he has done in this. A gcntlcmhu was walkiug down the street the ether day, when he saw two boys on the side walk apparently searching for something. One of the boys remarked, just as he reached them: 'Well, ten dollars is worth hunting after." So the gentleman stopped and searched awhile, finally he got tired, and said to the boys: "Have you lost a ten-dollar note ?" 'No, sir," said they; "but we didu't know but what we could find one." A LITTLE boy, on being asked his age on his return to school in September, replied that he was seven iu April. "Seven !" said the ques tioner, in some surprise; "your mother told me last September that you were more than seven. You must have been eight last April." "Yes'm, I was eight; but mother said I was too small lor eight, tto she put me back to seven." Cruelty to Animals. "What do you drive ' nch a pitiful-looking carcass as that for ? Why don't you put a good heavy coat of flesh on f him ?" asked a friend of an Irish carman, refer ring to his horse. 'A heavy coat of flesh, .jnavournecu ! Be all the blessed powers, now, " when, the poor crayther can scarce carry the little flesh there is on 'lin I" ' Climax. "My son," said an affectionate father, at the foot of the stairs, "arise and see the newly-risen luminary of day and hear the nweet birds singing their matin song of praise to their great Creator; tome, while the dew Is on the grass, and tender lambs are bleating on the i.tiiniili! come. I say. or I'll be up there with a switch and give you the soundest thrashing that ever you had in nil your born days." "Gorhain, I understand you can sneeze auy time you want to; is that bo ?" "Yea, I suppose I have that little gift." "Queer; let me hear you now, this mluuto." "Oh, I don't want to now." Who dare sit before the king with his hat oil ? A cuachiuim. IRRELIGIOUS NEWS. MEETING OF THE BROAD STREET TRACK SOCIETY. THEIR PKOCKKOINUH. At an early hour on Friday morning of last week the Society met on Broad .street, near Vine, and great real was manlfcsjd among the members present. . The President of the Society was early on the ground. The work of reform ing Broad street was their object. The Presi dent informed them that no time was to be lost. The people were in darkness, and if anything was to be accomplished it must be done by de termined effort. , The work of converting Broad street and disturbing the "sleepers" iu that dis trict, so given to railing, was then commenced with great vigor. Before high noon of the same day the street began to show signs of a change of life. Its old ways had been thrown aside, and a new purpose of life seemed to bo every where prominent. It is hoped that the reform will prove pcrraaucnt. Below we give a view of the Brand Street Truck Distributor fit Work. Early Rising. A gentleman from Nevada, being asked by an old lady in relation to the welfare of a favorite scapegrace of a nephew who had gone to that State, informed her that "the young niau had died from early rising." This puzzled the old lady very much until, by diut of inquiry, she learned that "early rising'' is the Nevada phrase lor hanging. As Bad as Another. A wile wanted her husband to sympathize with her in a feminine quarrel; but he refused, saying, "I've lived long enough to know that one woman is as good as another, if not better." "And I," retorted the exasperated wife, "have lived long enough to learn that one man is jut as bad as another, if not worse." The "oldest inhabitant" admits that it is sweet to have friends you can trust, but more conve nient to have friends who "trust" you.
