TDE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 1869. 6 NEW T0RK1SMS. fron Our Own Gorretpondeni. New Yobk. Feb. 4, 18C9. The erent of last evening was the opening of Booth'a new theatre, situated on the. southeast cctner of Twenty-third street and Sixth avenue, a'lhoutrh the advertisements insist that It is on Twenty-third street, between Fifth and 8ixth BTcnuos. Let us hope that this soliclniu is in deference to tho inhabitants of Twenty third street, which is usurping the ptestlge formerly due to Fourteenth. Mr. Booth cannot complain thut enough has Hot been said of his theatre in advance. News paper notices have been showered upon it as thick as pellets in a stage snow-storm, and sufficient encomiums have been lavished to fill a folio. The architects have been wor shipped; the tuperintendentof construction has been (rlorlfled; the master-masons have been fallen djwn before; tho roofer?, the plasterers, ; the Iron and granite workers, have been Indi vidually complimented; the artists in doors and Windows, the decorators in fresco, the mosaic floorers, the Italian marble computer?, and the designers of chandeliers, have come in for no small meed of praise; the plumbers, the gas inen, and the steam-heaters have been flattered 10 the top of tbeir bent; the chair manufac turers have beou set upon pedestals for public Contemplation; tho stage carpenters and machinists have become the crilerlous of tho metropolis; the container stands ready to be apotheosized; the scene painters, an i more particularly tho act-drop artist, have had an extra eternity of fame thrown in upon the several they have already enjoyed; the up holsterer and the purveyor ot furniture and appointments have experienced eulogiifms such as are pronounced upon greater men only after death; and the iutroducer of the patent clectrioal light dwells amid the radiance of a splendid notoriety. The principal members of the stock company arc, with the exception of Miss McVickar, well koown to New 7ork, and therefore to the United States. Miss McVickar only arrived hero on Tuesday, and last night made her first appearance, I believe, before a metropolitan 'audience. he is a very Interesting improvement upon the young lady who recently supported Mr. Forrest in a similar round of characters. Miss Fanny Morant is a brilliant secessionist from WaHack's, aDd Is engaged for roles Of which the "Nurse" in Eo neo and Juliet may be regarded as the exponent. Mr. Mark Smith is another WallucUian graduate, and Edwin Adams has wisely carried his Dead Hear: to bury it with the irrepressible "iler cutio." Between half past 7 and 8 o'clock last even 4ng the intersection of Twenty-third street and Sixth avenue was as crowded with carriages as the vicinity of the Academy ot Music ever was On the most brilliant ball or optra night of the eeas n. I hardly think that the liquid condi tion of the streets detained at home a single holder of teats. The scene inside at 8 o'clock was similar in brilliat cy and enthusiasm to that at the Walnut Street Theatre upon the occasion of Mr. Booth's first appearauco several seasons ago. It whs such an audience as would elicit the remark that the "o s t people were there, and the remark would not bo construed to mean mainly people of fashion and wealth alone. Scores of people were present whose best claims to conslJeratioi were that tliey were fashionable and wealthy. Mn and women dlstlnftulbhed in the various worlds of science, of art, of the three learned professions, and of pure social status, formed a large proportion ot the assemblage. There was no part of the house that was not graced with ladles .dressed iu the newest fabrics which, in pasing from the sempstress' bauds, hud become ihe expositions of the latest stjles. Every prominent journalist, whom circumstances per mitted, was present, and the entire audience was a shining and fragraut symbol of a very advanced stage of refinement and intellectuality. Comequeittly the applause incidental to the appearance of every artist was of a quieter character than marks most suc'i occasions, but in its place was substituted tho-e profound and inarticulate jet iutelligeut nmrmurs that warm silence, and those, brief and rare magnetic out breaks wh'ch indicate the re'icencc of good breeding aud the abcuvloii of enthusiasm striv ' lug with;one cnother. ' Mr. Booth perioimed neither be'.terno: worse than be has done scores of ti'ues iu the same ' character. Miss McVickmr is young, fresh, and earnest, and, as is Inevitable, ha caught some thing of the mannerism of Mr. tijoth, who has probably been, to some extent, her instructor. It is no hyperbole to say that the play was goreeously placed upon the singe, one of the Innovations of the cast is that the system of making figurantes transact the pait of pages, and of so introducing the leg clement into the legitimate, lit s been discarded, and the respective I i' ages to aParls," "Komeo," and "Tybalt" are ' represented by so many youths. I recognize no j familiar names among the inferior members of tbe stock company, and am therefore compelled to t ilieve that the rumor respecting the en ga .emetlt of a number of a.-pinug amateurs ( tr .'j uc irue. from the o penlng ot Mr. boo.h's theatre, we jay expect the commencement of a Shake spearian revival throughout the United StatcB. It .waa his certainty of the public lute. rest that would be awakened in this line which Induced Mr. LeBter Wallack to bring out Much J.do Akov ' Nolli ing, and tbe same reason is 'spurring on the managers of the grand opera f house to the production of The Tempest. There Is no knowing Uut that the legitimate drama will ere long have a. helping band to classical music, aud Italian opera tower above the spark- ; ling ruins of opera bouffe. ow will have heard ere this of the arrest of the geuuiue murderer of Mr. K- cois, and of tho overhauling of tho statlon-hou-ei for the dis covery ot his companion. The newspapers here have done a good deul. bv pr mature publica tion, to obstruct the eiioi' s oT the police, aud havtuu done 8", are taking the ca .nral revenge of blackguirdina tbe t unic l-teclive system.
