Till? DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, FHIDAYp JANU Alll 5, V LITERATURE. REVIEW OF NEW BOOKS. Tat Oi.i Worm in it Nkw Facb. By Henry Vi. Bellows. Vol. II. l'ablUUnd by lUrpar & Brothers. Philadelphia Agenta: Claxton, Bemsen & UaffelflDger. The ordinary route of the European tourist las been bo often described that it ia difficult to Bay anything new about it. Dr. Bellows' narrative, therefore, does not tell na anything that has not been told before in books of travel innumerable, but it la valuable as con taining the Impressions of an intelligent and cultivated gentleman, who knew how to use his eyes and ears, who was unbiassed by pre jndioes, and who endeavored to look on life in the Old World in an appreciative spirit. Dr. Bellows' deaoriptions of persons, soenes, and inoidents are fresh and graphio, albeit at times a little prolix, and hia comments are evidently honest and dictated by a desire to do Justice in all cases when he could not commend. During his visit to Egypt Dr. Bellows was muoh impressed with the Mahometan re ligious observances, and his conclusions are that there must be some real vitality in suoh religion for it to exert the influences that it does, lie looked npon tin worship of the Mahometans with the largest Christian cha rity, and he saw many things in the simpli city of their ceremonials, the multiplication of mosques, open alike to rioh and poor at all houTS.and the attention wbioh all classes give to their religions affairs, which might be imitated with advantage by Christians. The Catholio observances did not impress Dr. Bellows so favorably, and he expresses considerable ap prehension at the spread of Roman Catho licism in this oountry. His description of the 'Oeremonials which he witnessed in Rome are interesting, however, and will repay perusal. We quote the following aooount of a pontifical Mass at St. Peter's Church in Rome: I have just returned from the Pontifical Mass in the SisUue Chapel. At 10 A. M. the Swiss (luacdx, in thoir uni'orms or black and orange, Blabbed with icd, died luto tne chapel, followed by the hundred or to of Mraugcrj who nod dressed ibcmselves, the Indies in black, with black veils on their heads, the gentlemen in black dress suitf, according to the rigid etiquette ot these grand ceremonial occasions. The car dinals came in one by one, eactt tallowed by his attendant priest, knelt before the altar nud too it thtir seat on a raided dais, common to all. A each came iu all the seated cardiuals rose until tbe new c mer had taken his place. They were aregbed in loni; red uiobkh witn enormous trains, over white priests' smocks, with red stockinets, white tur canes, and a snull-cup of red. It was no easv matter tor them to niHuiiro taeir robes in uii tne prostrations, saluie, and movements the; paspd tl rough, in the course ot the service. At 11 o'clock a proces sion of other cardinals, bishops, aud priests ushered tbe Pope into the ch-tpel. Ha took bis place noon bis throne on the Iclt hand of the altar. He was dressed In white satin robes emoroidered with gold, aud wore a white skull cap. He looks now about 73 years old. His face Is mil J, patieut, aud benignant, and he eaters luto all chutch cerenion.es with marked earnestness and lmpl'citv or bearivr. His per son is laree and commanding, his head full and well shape J, aud he looks more ai Ed word Kverett did in tbe cIohdk years ot his life than auy person I can no think of. He was attended by two cardinals, uue on the right and another ou the left, who were raised above the other-. One looked as Anionelh ought to a man with a hooked nose and a Si m jaw, fitted to uphold the Pope's temporal government iu its most imperilled hour. The service was chietly conducted by a cardinal b shop, who had a grand voice, and could be heard by all the assemoly. Another cardinal sat ou the platform ot red cloth at the foot of the Pope's throne, who had special functions to perform, such as swlnglm; the censer at bis Holinesa at certain intervals. The Armenian Patriarch held the caudle whenever the Pope read any small portion of the service. His book wsb mexnwhlle supported by another grandee of tbe Church, and everything, to the holding ' of his skirts, seemed assigned in most careful gradation to those having the precise claim to the privilege. Nothing could exceed the punc tiliousness and etiquette observed. I have often been amazed at the knowledge ot their several pans displaced by perlormers In the compli cated arrangements of secular and stage specta cles, but the memory and method observed in a pontifical m Bss exceeds every other achievement In the way ol conquering ceremonial complexity. I will not attempt to describe the order of the ceremony, which, except in splendor and the presence ol the embodied dignity of the Roman Church, was like any other hih mass. The famous choir of the Sistine Chapel hid much the largest part of the work to do, and they did it with a piecision and copiousness aud mepniflceiicp of musical edect which entitle them to their superlative reputation. The "Gloria" exceeded in exquisiteness of harmony, In llffht and bbade, in fullness of sound, and in exactness of rendering, anything in the shape of unaccompanied nia.e voices I ever heard. At ibe moment when the sacred elements were undei going their imaginary transubstautiation, the Bcei.6 was truly impressive. A profound silence reisoed while Pope, cardinals, bishops, and the wdoIo assembly knelt aud waited as if some awful event were iu suspense. Certainly the Catholic Church is true to Its theories, Havlue adopted tbe incredible dojima or Tran substantia'.lon, it honors it with logical reve rence, tverj cuing niiiges, as well it may, ou this tiemeudous assumpMou. It Is the pre sence cf fbe consecrated nia-s rbat hallows the altar. "Put on your hat." baid one of the func tionaries to me in a cotd church one day, "the Host is not on the altar." Another poiut, deference to superiors is en pbasized in every possible way. and thus hierarcmcil orjer is kept up. All the cardinal' to-day iu turn paid thtir homage to the Pope by kissing his hand. In turn, btainulntr with the eldest, they did homage to each other, piiiitr tu0 "fax nobis oum" down from the upp r cardinal to the last appointed. Precedence id observed as strictly as t court xue cardinal or ii'nesi rann swings he censpr at tbe Pope. A bishoo swings it at the rdlnals Iu turn, who rUe and bow as the othcial alutes them with the incense. Then tbe IshoDS are incensed in their turn by a priest, .nd finally the Driest b a deacon, and so the etiquette is laboriously kept ur. Nothing could serve belter to uphold, in fie eyes cf the people, the official sanctity of tbe priesthood or tbe finniticauoe of tbe clerical rank. Among the cardinals, one was dressed iu black robes, with a Dlack cape; another in greyish robes, with u trey cape, aid the Armenian Patriirch had tils own colors, and wore a heird. All the proper Roman prieds, from tbe Pope down, are shaven und shot u, and wear the tonsure. The cardi nals are nios ly beyond sUtv, judsii.g by their faces. Mo-t ol tnem appear to be Italians, an i have large Komau noses, large even, small chinr, anJ well. rounded laces. They are iiot what we thould call spiritual-looking men, bit they are aristocratic and minted 1n features, aud have tor the most part good heads and not bad expressions. One meets them in their red iud gilded coaches in every part of Rome, uully with two footmen in truudy liveries on the toot board, and a venerable coachman ou the box. Sometimes In tbe U iliee or other public drives they are met walking, with the inseparable fluukev behind them, aud the car riage following. Dr. Bellows' work ia issued In handsome style J Messrs. Harper & Brothers, and it fill doubth-ss find appreciative readers. Jem a or Nazakbth. Br Lyman Abbott. : Illustrated with designs by Dor5, De La roohe, Fenn, and others. Published by liar per & Brothers. Philadelphia Agents: Claxton, Remsen, h Ilaffelnnger. Taking the fonr Gospels as a foundation, Mr. Abbo't has prepared a life of Christ with the vents arranged in exaot ohronologtoal order, and "Illustrated by whatever light can be thrown npon the entire narrative by a careful study of the clroumstanoes and conditions of the age." Dismissing theologloal and oritloal dogmas, he has endeavored merely to present a narrative of Christ's life and labors whloU will be acceptable to Christians of all shades of opinion. The work opens with a description of the rise and progress of the Jewish Commonwealth, and althongh the analogy between it and the United States seems rather foroed, Mr. Ab bott's treatment of the subjeot wilt enable the majority of readers to gain a clearer idea of the Jewish tystem than they can from the sacred narrative alone. The description of the public and private manners and customs of the Jewish people are interesting, and the account of the trial of Christ is a vivid analy sis of the anoient system of jurisprudence. The work is handsomely printed and bound, and it is illustrated by a number of superior designs of eminent artists. From Claxton, Remsen & Ilaffelflnger we have received "Nature's Nobleman," by the author of "Rachel's Seoret," etc Published by Harper & Brothers. This is an interestiqg novel of the present day, in which the author illustrates the moral "Better not be at all Than not be noble." "Zell's Popular Enoyolopedla," the third and fourth numbers of which we have re calved, is one of the most important and com. mendable works that hai been undertaken of late in this country. It plaoes a vast variety of Information before the public in a shape to suit the pockets of the poor as well as rioh. Each weekly number contains eight pages, and is published at the low prioe of ten cents livery subject admitting of it is illustrated, and the work when completed will contain an amount of Information which cannot be est! mated by any pecuniary valuation. The work is edited by L. Colange, Esq., assisted by eminent literary and scientific gentlemen, aud is published by T. Ellwood ZU, Noa. 17 and 10 South Sixth street. The February number of Captain Mayne Reid's magazin.e Onward, published by G.W. Carleton, of New York, has variety enough and interest enough in ita contents to suit the most exacting tastes. Tales of exciting ad venture, such as Captain Reid ia famous for, are interspersed with love stories and poetry of the most tender and hear-subduing description, and the imaginative portions of the magazine are judiciously intermingled with papers on a variety of entertaining sub jects of popular interest. Among the misoel laneous items under the head of "Trifles" we find Captain Reid squaring off at Bouoioault in this faEhlon: Here is a funny lit Its speech, from the Hps of a celebrated piajwriaut isoucicautt, by name according to newspaper report delivered from the stage ol a Dublin theatre, aud to un Irish audience ' i intend to devote myself entirely to liteiary pursuits, and I t-hall endeavor to send you, from tunc to lime, pictures of Irish lile and diame ter, belter even than those of the Colleen Bawn." Ghost of Gerald Gnffiu ! Leap up out of your grave, and smite, nip and tnign, tuis dishonor able charlatan I Belter "eveu" than those of the Colleen Bawn ! As If he, Dion Bouctcault, had ever conceived a single character in the "Colleen," or known anything about them, till the day on which he niched them from the dead and preatly lameuted author of "The Colle gians!" We may expect some day to see this dramatic stupe-carpenter stand behind the foot lights of a New Orleans theatre, aud proclaim to tbe planters of Louisiana that he will yet give them better pictures that those we supposed ourselves to have painted under the title of 'Quadroon," even to the suggestion In a note coiner of our somewhat voluminous scnbblings the pseudonym of ' Octoroon" never heard either In Louisiana or elsewhere, but ot which this dramatic trickster has availed blmselt to tome purpose. If there be anything calculated to throw doubt on Shakespeare's eistence,tt is such naked plagiarism as this going; unchal lenged right before tbe world's face aud iu the teeth of the present time supposed never to have been surpassed iu intelligence. A charge of plagiarism against himself Cap tain Reid disposes of thus: Talking of plagiarism, we are ourselves uulcr a charge of it. Iu the drst number of this maga zine we pioclalnied all the "articles" orisiual. It did not occur to us that under the very prosaic title "articW would be included the ptec s of poetry uaeo by us partly lor type ornamentation, and pattly to till up tbe blank spaces ou paei.
