We tske the following on American operatlo fiinperii from the full Mall Gazette: The itigeiiious titendhal was fond of saying and proving, after Lis own fashion, that Italian opera never could exist at New York. JNew York is a tboronsuiy commercial city; the Americans are u .ilit.irians; they hare no aiiBtocracy; they have no piutare galleries; they Lave no leisure. Therefore they can have no Jtaiian opera. "iew lorkf" Bays a character in one of Stendhal' a novels who thinks for a moment of exiling himself, "but at iNew Xoik there is no Italian opera." Stendhal wan n fully convlnoed of the truth of Lis arRaiiieut th.-t he never took tbe trouble to coutidtr, as a moaner man might bare done, whether the conolasion ke had arrived at was or was not in accordance witli aotual faot; and he died in the belief that Italian opera was not to be heard in America at all, and that the .Americans were essentially an auti-operatio people. Without knowing very much about it, we fancy the Americana care more for dra matio mnmo than the English, do. We are assured that at New York opera ia played all the year round, or neaily bo; and eperatio establishments exist not only at New York, but also at Philadelphia and New Orleans. One thing li quite certain, that America pro duces vocalists, which England obviously cannot do; though Englishmen and English women who have fine voices may, of coarse, go abroad and learn to sing In some country where the ttorernment ia foolish, enough to enconrage schools of art, and frivolous enough to "subvention" opera houses. None of the singers from America who hare achieved buo ceea in this country, and in other parts j,of Europe, bare been ol Anglo-Saxon race; aud it ia nolioeable that they are all light so pranos. If any one likes to argue that the climate of New York ia favorable to the de velopment of that fascinating and essentially feminine description of voice, it will suit bid purjoae to remember the marked improve ment which took place in the roioe of the lamented Madame liosio daring her resideuoe in the United States. Bat we imagine the true explanation of the matter to bs that foreigners from all parts of Europe go to America, and thtt the gifted American singers one hears of from time to time are the chil dren, not of Anglo-Americans (it would be more agreeable to us to believe bo), bat of parents who belong to one of the great musical . races of Europe. Mad'lle Patti, who, though not bora in America, was educated among Americans, and Bang at the beginning of her career to American audiences, ia half Italian, half Spanish by descent. Mad'lle Hsuck ia German by the father's side. We hare no ethnological information on the eubjoot of Mad'lle Kellogg; bat it is evident from her name that she alao 13 not of pure Anglo American origin. The laBt musical Importation from Amerio3 will help materially to keep up the character of the country as a produoer of artijt3, If not of art. Mad'lle Minnie ilauck is so young that it ia perfectly safe to say of her that she baa yet much to learn. But 6 he has nothing to unlearn; she possesses all the essential qualities of an operatic vocalist, and she is graced with the power of pleasing, which no amount of teaching, no amount of study, can give. No critio, nnlesa absolutely cynical, would, on seeing this graceful young girl ven turing on buoU a part as that of "Amlna" (which has tried the energies of all the neat est sinters of the day), occupy himself in en deavoricg to fiad out her weak points. Speak ing, however, from a general reoolleotion of Mad'lle li&nck's performance, we can Bay confidently that all she wants in strength Her voice is not bo powerful as it will be a few years hence; but at this moment a sweeter, clearer, purer voice than Mad'lle Haaok's especially in the medium ia not to be heard In the arduous character of "Msrgherita" Mad'lle Ilauck was eren more Buooessful than as "Amina" in La Sonnambula. The bright quality of her roioe told admirably in the jewel song, and her performance was marked by mnch earnestness and by the most engaging naivtto in the sentimental portions ef the gar den Ecene. One could scarcely help fearing the efl'ec of ench trying scenes as those of the cathedral, and again of the prison, on such a delicate voice and Buoh a debate organiza tion generally; but the yonng, fragile-looking artist rose in eaoh case to the situa tion, and showed that she oould not only be tender and touching, bat also eminently tragic.
