Bierstadt baa beeu exiiibiiiug a large
landscape, "Sierra Nevada," at the torly
Sixth exhibition of tlie LVrlin Royal Acaldtny,
sow open. He la olaiined there en a German
Artist, and big works are spoken of aa being
'exquisite' and "grand."
Canzio, a famous Italian sculptor, died
lately in Lis native oity, Genoa, at the age of
eighty-one. His most renowned work la the
Bionumeut;of Christopher (Julnmba9,m the
l'lace de rAcqrtiTerdl, iu that city.
A collection of pictures by the late U. II.
AVeboert will soon be placed on exhibition in
London. Mr. Webnert, an Kiiglishman, of
German parentage, wa a distinguished nieiu
Vpr of the Ljudou luslitute of l'ainters in
"Water Colors.
A statue of James Watt, w'nose nam-) is
Co renowned iu connection with the develop
ment of steam aa a motive power, baa bwen
ereoted in Birmingham. This statue, which
is eigbt feet three inches in height, ia the
work of Alexander Mnnro, of London, aui ia
executed in Sicilian marble.
There are now iu l'aria fifty eveninjr
Bcliools of art for the woiking clamed, iu
which upwuids of 4000 pupils are taught.
Tue models used iu tbe.se schools are selected
Ly a cointxi.ioiou. I'ri.es for proficiency are
fiven by the municipal authorities, and,
where the proficiency ia very remarkable, re
wards are bentowed by the Emperor.
Uicuaid ltothweil, a portrait-painter, who
trade Lis mark many years ago in Dublin,
died lately at Koine. He was a pupil of Law
rence, and Lis portraits were marked by great
richness of color and breadth of treatment.
Latterly, Rothwell bad resided altogether in
Tans, where be adopted the manner of work
common to the French school, of which his
later works may be considered a3 examples.
But few Americans who travel in England
ever think of visiting the Dulwich Gallery,
Which contains, by-tbe-by, one of the finest
collections of pictures by the old Flemish and
Dutch painters in England, if not in the
world. This gallery, which is attached to
Dulwich Colleg-i, wai founded in 1S11 by Sir
Francis Bourgeois, II. A., au English artist of
French descent, and many of the works in it
Were purchaaed from Frenob. noblemen who,
after the Revolution, turned ill their valua
bles into money. Cuyp, Dow, Rembrandt,
Rubens, Ilobbema, Berghem, aud many other
masters of like renown are fully represented
in the Dulwich Gallery.
Photography byuoonlight ia the latest
novelty in that branch of art. A photographer
ef Glasgow, Bieefe by nam-, has suooeeded in
producing several landscapes an I marine views
under the ellect of moonlight, an I these, when
Been in the stereoscope, are o lid to be wouder
fully faithful reproductions of the sceuery re
presented. Describing these, au K'iglisa writer
says: "In one of the slides, a vry marvel of
delicacy, an ellect of bioad moonlight a light
Wholly different from that of d iy is shown ou
a breaking wave; in another, the moon ia seen
shining faintly through tho lifts of a cloudy
tky; a third shows a calm lake in deep sha
dow; and a fourth, a beach from which the
tide has marly ebbed, wifi the moonlight
gleaming on the wet t-anl. Hat perhaps the
most perfect work in the collection is the pho
tograph of a marble statue, also taken by the
aid ot the moonbeams."
One of the pictures by Mr. Ward, in the
Commons, Corridor, at the Parliament House,
"Westminster, has been protected by glass.
Another work of the series ia to receive a like
protection: this is "Wi'lia-a aud Mary." Mr.
Cope's pictures in the Lords' Corridor of the
same building have been treated with the
new pantfline solution, to which we referred
come time since, with, we believe, a view of
Staying deterioration which may be oausei by
bad air, damp, fumes of gas, or what else,
which has done so much misohief at the
Houses. Mr. Herbert's picture of "Moses
presenting the Tables of tun Law" is said to
show signs of deterioration; that artist, more
fortunate than his fellows who were com
pelled to execute their pictures in situ is be
lieved to be at work at home on the second
painting for the Peers' Robing Room. The
labors of Mr. Maclise in the Royal Gallery
are in abeyance, if not ended.
Among the new pictures intended for
public exhibition at the National Gallery when
the departure of the Royal Academy from
Trafalgar bquare leaves room lor them, is a
large altar-piece by Carlo Crivelli, represent
ing the Virgin and Child in the centre of the
lowest of buccet&ive tiers of panels, which are
inclofed in oue of the characteristic architec
tural frames of the period in which the painter
lived. The designing of the pair is very sweet
and beautiful, and beyond the common for
tune of Crivelli. The subordinate figures on
this immense altar-piece are those of saints,
etc. In the manner which was proper, if not
peculiar, to the painters of the Maroa in Carlo's
day, Borne of the decoration of the dresses
worn by the figures are moulded upon the
panels in relief and gilt; the morse of St.
Peter, who appears in the left of the centre, is
thus distinguished. The painting was pur
chased frcm the Demidotf Collection, in the
Villa ban Donato, Florence. The buying of
this large work renders the National Gallery
richer than any other collection in pictures by
this very interesting painter.
The National Gallery has received the
large family picture by Gainsborough, which
was bequeathed by the late Alexander Btillie,
Esq., and which, according to the testator's
intention, remained in the hands of the late
M. J. Uigpins, lv?q., uiml his death. This
retention of the picture by the latter person
oct Dm d under a decision by the authorities
of the Treasury, 18th of January, 1S58, upon
the terms of the beqUfBt, which were legally
informal. The painting was exhibited at the
British Institution a few years sicoe, and com
prises the whole-length portraits of the Baillie
family, father, mother, aud children. The
second is seated a little to the right of the
centre of the composition; the first leans his
elbow upon the back of her chair; the children
stand in front of the lady. There is much of
Gainsborough's richness aud freedom in the
treatment of this picture, iudeed,'it may be
clashed among his finer work; it has also
some of Lis characteristic defects, e. g , the
disproportionate drawing of the gentleman's
head to his body, a defect which, by the jaxta
pobition of the towering head-dress of the lady,
is made more conspicuous than it would other
i. wise be.
