This Is a very expensive book, printed to the amount of lb'O'.UOO copies, at a cost of $144,000. Tin ' Agricultural Department is a candidate for 100,000 more copies of its report. The Patau; Oflioe people want 21,000 copies extra; and there is . a book ou the death of Mr. Lincoln, which is the most costly book probably ever issued in the United States. This is the ap pendix to Mr. Seward's diplomatic corres pondence, containing expn-.-tous of sympathy and condolence with the nation on the fate of Abraham Lincoln. The co-t price of proiao ing the book will befil 8, '200, or more than six dollars a copy, while the bindings on some Special copies, ordered for the crowned heads, etc, abroad, will probably bring them up to twenty or twenty-live dollars a copy. Of the Agricultural Report the extraordinary number ot two hundred and twenty thousanl copies have been ordered for Ust year, at a cost f $180,000, or about eighty-five cents a copy. This co-ti3 enough to pay the President, Vice President, all the Cabinet oliijers, the Speaker of the HouBe, and two thiMs of the firitt-cUss foreign ministers. In the.se reports there are four hundred and fifty thousaud pounds of paper, or two hundred and twenty-five tons enough to take two hundred and twenty-five double-horse wagons to pull them. At this moment there are eight hundred thousand copies of the reports for various years lying iu the vaults of the Fatent OilL;e . building, being the quautity aunaally printed in excess of the demands even of txtravaganoe. These copies represent $80,000 of the people's money invested lu waste paper. In one t ear new tv pe added a cost of $1 3. 804: printinc ink, $19,717: coal, seven hundred tons: new machinery, $5000. In the bindery four thousand Russian leaMier Bkins were used, seven hnudred and eix'y packs ot fcold leaf (coating nearly $000), nearly 5000 worth of twine and as much glue. Paper for Post Ofli -e blanks alone cost 948,000. The binding of books consumed 73, 0(J0, and biuding materials $113,000. Ea graving and lithographing cost $111,000. The paper that runs this huge printing office conns from various mauuficiurers, and it is not ordered by the Congressional printer, but by a joint committee of Congress. It is ordered in ream ol live bundled sheets, and sometimes paid for by the pouud. In the latter case from twenty to thirty cents is coinuiouly paid, and by the learn the prices vary lroin eight dollars and a hull to thirteen dollars. Three thousand reams came ioin Baltimore, nineteen thousand reams and also twenty thousand pounds came from Manchester, Connecticut, four thousand reams lioin 13o3ton, four thousand lroin Lan caster, Pennsylvania, one thousand from Philadelphia, exclusive of one hundred and sixty-eight thousand four hundred pounds, . Mid . twenty thousand reams came from New York. The manufacturers fnrnishing the bulk of the paper were Jeesup, Keeney, Magarge, Warren, and Baer. The co6t of all this paper was $035,000, considera bly past half a million,' yet this was less than the bum paid for live precediug years, the cost of the paper being in 1SG5 more than a mil lion aud a tparter of dollars, and averaging for five je.is about $820,000. At the end of this economical year about t?22S(000 worth of paper remained in storage. Government never insures its. property, and this im me use amount of inflammable matter is stored in sheds ad jacent to the printing office and guarded by watchmen. TLe prntiug for the Executive Department of the Government costs nearly as inuuh money as the total work done for Congress. The executive department, with the courts, required in 18G7 about $757,000 worth of printing, while the Iloue of Representatives ran np a bill of $454,003 aud the Senate $186,000. In addition to this, aotsof Congress warranted about $233,000 additional of work done for miscellaneous objects. The Supreme Court and its satellites take nearly $15,000. The Agricnltnral Department, with its huga reports, passes $32,000. Tha Treasury leads With neurly $300 000, and the War Depart ment follows it with $148,000. Next cornea the Fobt Offioe, Navy, and Interior Depart ments, ranging from $78,000 to $52,000. The Government printing oflioe thus involves yearly expense of from one million and a half dollars to over two millions, aud this does not include the printing of the debates of Congress, which is done by contract at the Ghtbe office, and which costs seven dollars a column to re port them and six dollars (I believe) a copy, per section, for the Globe, in which they are printed. Government printers get a trifle better prices than are paid elsewhere in the country. Steady work will give one fifteen hundred dollars a year in this manufactory. The work pins get from nine to twelve dollars a wank. The printers are almost always in excos however. Transparent looking-glasses are the latest . Paris novelty.; ..
