REVIEW Olf NltlVV BOOKS.
Bermons bt ITenry Ward BiincnER. In two
Tolntnea. Published by Harper & Brothers.
Philadelphia Ageing: Claxton, Keniseu St
IlaffelfiDger.
These volumes contain forty sermons
preaobed by Mr. Beecher, mostly in Plymouth
Church, Brooklyn, during the past ten years;
and they hare been selected with the idea of
presenting, as far as possible, a correct view
of the range of suVjecta he is accustomed to
employ in his ministry. Ilia discourses in re
gard to, the application of Chriutiau truth to
the publio questions of the day have been re
t erred, and it ia intimated that they may ba
published in a separate volume. Henry VVard
Beecher, more perhaps than any other
preacher of the gospel, can claim to be ft
power in the laud. His utterances always
claim a bearing from his enemies as well
as friends; for it is well understood that
he always pays eoniethipg iroitby of atten
tion. Mr. lfeecher, however, is too often
mere isensatioualist and
and before the 1U-
the slavery question
enlisted every right
tbe Union on the side
Of abolition, he was esteemed by perhaps a
majority of his eouutryiuen as a mere politi
cal demagogue, who prostituted his sacred
office by stirring up strife and dissension on
the vexed questions of the day. Mr. Beecher,
however, has got the majority on his sidd
now, although there are still many who retain
their old prejudices against him, notwithstand
ing the faot that they have altered their views
on the points of politiaa in which they onoe
differed with him most materially. We think
it well, therefore, that in this collection of ser
mons Mr. Beecher should have dropped poll
tics, and that he should have appeared only
as an earnest, independent, and fearless minis
ter of the Gospel of Christ. We commend
these volumes to Christians of all denomina
tions and all shades of opiuion, with the assu
rance that they will find in them much of
profit and instruction, much profound thought,
and much genuine eloquence in the exposition
of the divine principles cf Christianity.
The sermons before us have been seleoted,
with Mr. Beeoher's approval, by the Rev.
Lyman Abbott, and in revLJug them for pub
lication Mr. Beecher has chosen to present
them just as they were takeu down phono
grapbicaliy at the time of delivery, removing
only the most obvious faults which did not
Inhere in their very structure.
The Woman's Kingdom. By Mrs. Dinah Mu
loh Craik. Published by Ilarper &
Brothers. Philadelphia Agents: Claxton,
Kemeen & Ilailelfinger.
This is the latest and, in many respests, the
test work of the esteemed author of "John
Halifax." To those who have perused Mrs.
Craik's previous writings this statement is a
sufficient assurance that ' The Woman's
Kingdom" is not only a novel that will repay
perusal, but that it Is worthy of a permanent
place in the library as a household treasure, to
he referred to again and fgain with a pleasure
Which only a good and noble book can in
spire. The title is au indication of the aim
of the work, which endeavors to show, in a
gracefully written story, the iciluenoe of women
' in the formation of character, their mission
as comforters and consolers, and the responsi
bilities which attach to them therefrom. We
would be doing no servioe to our readers to
give them a description of the plot of tho
Btory, which is simple in its obstruction and
satisfactory in its denouement. The following
dedicatory verses addressed to Mona Margaret
Paton the little daughter of James -Noel
Patoii, the artist, we presume have a grace
and pathos of their own which command
them, and which persuade us to quote them,
independently of the fact that they aoourately
describe the aims of the delightful Btory to
which they are prefixed:
My little fclrl ! sweet uncrowned queen
Ol a fair kingdom, dim uud Ltr;
WhoKe budding J He, 'ceaib rosy tiureen,
JScaice recognizes yet, I ween,
What lives of oilier women are;
Child, when the burden we lay down,
Thy lender Lands in urn Hit, and bear
The bonseriold tceptre arid Jove-crown,
Green-wreathed or Bung wnii dead leaves
brown
Take courage, both are lioly wear.
Better to love than to be lovea; .
Better lo serve and. servluu, guide,
Thau wnlt, with Idle emre unproved, .
And flapping Hull by each breath moved,
The turning of life's solemn tide. -Live,
work, i.ud love, as Hesjvi n assign,
For heaven, or ninu, ibis sacred purl;
AneeMrc-HS of a noble Hue
Or calm in maidenly decline;
But beep till death the woman's heart
Many of those who read "The Woman's
Kingdom" while it was being published seri
ally in Ilarper's Magazine, will doubtless be
pleased to have the completed work iu the
book form in which it is now issued. The
Btory is copiously illustrated, but the majority
of the designs are not nrst-rate. A lew which
we take to be Mr. W. Small's, from the style-
are very good, and admirably represent the
characters of the novel.
From Claxton,' Remsen & IlafTelfinger we
have received "Life's Lottery, or Life and its
Alms." This is the fourth edition of a story
which has obtained considerable popularity
The anthoress en leavers, in the form of a plea
Bant story, to portray the dreams aud aspira
tions of youth as contrasted with the realities
of life, with its struggles, hardships, and temp
tations, and also the development of eharaoter
under the influence of various ciroumttanses.
. From T. B. Peterson & Brothers we have
received Family Secrets." This story is au
Bounced as a companion to "Family Pride"
and "Pique," and it will doubtless interest
those who have been interested in the last-
named novels.
Sloan's Architectural Review for October i3
fully up to the high standard of the previous
numbers as regards the variety, interest, and
1-actical value of its articles. The Review
pay equal attention to the practioal aud
aesthetic branches of the Mchitactaral profes
sion: it is handsomely prluinj and finely
illustrated with designs for buildings of
various kinds, and with full descriptions of all
the important details, fcuoh a publication as
this has long been needed, and Messrs. Hloan
and Lukens have shown that they possess the
ability, knowlwdge, and taste to carry it ou in
the right Etvle.
