THE DAIL1 EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28. 18G3.' MUSICAL AWD DRAMATIC Th Worrell Slatera At th ChMnnt, The KnglUta version of Offenbach's oper. of The Grand Dunhesa of Gerolstein, now being performed at the Caesnut Htrcet Theatre by the Worrell Sisters and their New York Company, hat been announced as a burlesque on the origi nal woik. Thii la true In one sense of the word and not in another. A burlesque may be either an amusing piece of extravaganza and exaggera tion, In which things not in themselves laughable are caricatured and thown np In a humorous manner, or It may be a silly attempt to imitate something of recognized merit, without suc ceeding In doing to. In one case we laugh with the actors and in the o'.her we laugh at them, and the quality of our mirth in the two cases is by no me ins the same. The company now at the Cbesaut give a very tieb'.e imitation of the super-excellent performance of Bateman's troupe of French artists, and the most amusing portion of til 3 entertainment is to sco the stylo in which the airs and (Traces and gestures of the French actors are mi. nickel by the Misses Worrell and their coadjutors. It is the play of Ilamlcl with the part of "Hamlet" omlt'.ed, for all the nicety and perfection of detail, all the vivacity and artistic finish, are wanting. The Knglish version presented by the Misses Worrell is sufficiently good tor their purpose it gives all that is essential in th original work, most of the music U retained and with good actus; and eln.tr.lng the piece would be not at all an inditlcreut entertainment We have before expressed the opinion in these columns that one great reason for the decided ucoess of Offenbach's operas, independently o the merits of the woiks themselves, was the very complete style In which they were pu npon the stage, and the remarkably fine, comic acting of the principal performers. That any American troupe following in the footsteps ' of these French people should be able 'to equal them in all things Is not to be expected, and while we are disposed to make all due allowances, we think at least we have a right to look for an approximation to excellence. The Misses Worrell have all of them had ample experience In bur lesque acting, and with their present company they have appeared In The Grand Duchess of Oerolefein and other of Otfenbich's operas often enough to attain a reasonable amount of ease and style in their performauce. And yet we only find that they give a feeble imitation of the French actors, without attempting anything in the slightest degree original, apparently oblivi ous of the fact that they have neither the educa tion nor experience of those that they copy after, and that as mere imitators they vaaai of course appear at a disadvantage. Miss Bophie Worrell, as "The Grand Duchess." gives some of Tostee's shrugs and shakes, but she has nothing of the dash and spirit which were the most meritorious points in Tostee's per sonation. The best portions of the performance last eveniog at the Cheenut were the Bites Luit which V.iss Sophie sung quite nicely much better than she did anything else the trio be tween the conspirators, and the "Can-can" dance at the end ot the third act. Of the rest of the performauce we cannot speak in very high terms of praise. Mies Jennie, as "Prince Paul," gesticulated somewhat In the style of M. Leduc, hut thete comparison is at an end, for the real C mic e'ements of the character as developed by thatcailtal comedian escaped her altogether. Mlfc Irene, as "Wanda," was even less successful thau her sisters. Mr. S. B. Villa, in the psrt of 'Fritz," copies after nobody; his style is his own, and he is a law unto himself. If he ever saw the part performed, which we are inclined to doubt, he has set out with a determination to scorn ail precedents and to be original or nothing, lis had better be nothing To do justice to Ih's gentlcmau, he is more vivacious than any other member of the com pany, but his vivacity often comes in the wrong place. He gesticula'es, bonds his body, aud .postures in a most nnsoldicrly manner; and he cannot even touch his hat in a salute without giving a flourish which is suggestive of the free' and-easy style of the anateur stage. We think that the company at the Chesnut could act better If they would make the effort but their present st tie of performance will have to be improved considerably before they will be entitled to marked comaienda'ion. There is ai w an English burlesque compauy in New York 1. . iiilAButiin1 nn tit 1 ii 1 1 1 n r (Kali nr a tt r VI UUf Tv C UUUviOiauvJ u niuuiuj buvu w j mv publio favor on their own merits, aud in a style of performance in which they are at home. This fact is worthy of attention, and the Mlsse Worrell would appear lo better advantage lu a fairly-written builesque, by an American o English author, than Ihej do in borrowed plumes, which they are unable to wear grace fully.
