THE D AIL EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, WEDNESDAY, OPT ODER 21. 1808. MUSICAL AM) DRAMATIC. E. Irnvenport nt the Wnlnnt. O'Krefr's bright old rom(y of Wi'd Oa't oc mach by betDtc comprener into threo act, ami we wish that Mr. P.ivenport aud oilier acior of first-rate ability would make It a matter of con science, as Mr. Murdoch dies, to present this and other standard plays of like character et nearly entire a la coiiil-tont with deceucy. The leading actor show t) better advantage Where the dialoeuols not crippled by ruthless "cuUIdrb" and vry excellent as wai Mr. Davenport's ac tnar lust evening, there was an Incompleteness and wnut of finish about the portormauce, as a whole, wtiica is attributable mainly to the cauo we have iu" dicaten, for the actors generally acquitted thou elves creditably, an3 the comedy went off with spirit. Mr. Davenports "Rover" Is a fluo eihl bition of his powers as a comedian: it is lest exuberant tbau Mr. Murdoch's, aud less rolllck iat and cxlravngaut than the rendition of some other actors wb? have attempted it of late years ll more subdued, Mr. Davenports is perhaps a finer rendition than any other, if we except Mr. Murdoch's, aud we are not sure Out that we like It, on tbo whole, better than that excellent comedian's personation. Mr. Davenport makes "Rover's" spoutlnes seem like his natural ".Iterances, and his play-book quota tions come as pat as if they wera the coinings of his own brain. This is nota small merit, in our opiDion; for the temptation to exaggerate is very (ireat, and only a really reflued and in tellectual artist would be willing to forego his opportunities for exciting laughter and aplaus for the sake of making a real character out of what the dramatist, in all probability, only in. tended for a piece of lauRtaable burlesque. Not the least merit of Mr. Davenport's delineation Is the delicacy and refinement with which he represents "JUover's" vagrant disposition and extravagances, restrained by his love for "Lady Amaranth, n nntil he is transformed into a per fect gentleman in manners and conversation, as be already is in heart and tecling. Iudeed, the shole personation is one that it Is a pleasure to witness for the present enjoyment that it gives, and to remember as one of the really good things that we meet with semi occasionally in the course of a play going experience. In an entirely different vein from "Rover" la the "William" ol the nautical drama of Black-eyed Susin, which was given as an afterpiece last evening. "William" has always been a lavorlte part with Mr. Davenport, and one of the most popular with his audiences. All the strong points of the conventional stage sailor are brought out, but there Is a real power and pathos about It which raise it to a high rank as a genuine work of art. We have never 6een him act "William" better than he did last evening, and the appreciation of the audience was shown by the heartiness of the applause. The City Amusements. At thb Cbesnvt the Hanlons and their Trans, atlantio Combination will appear this evening. At thb Walnut Mr. E. L. At the Broadway Theatre, New York, No Thoroughfare is running very successfully, and Mr. Florence's personation of "Obenrelzer" is highly spoken of, albeit it is judged to be an Imitation of Fechter, the French-English actor who made a great bit in the part last season In London. On Monday Mra. Florence made her first appearance this season in the farce of Twice Married. Miss Lydia Thompson and ber English bur lesque company have made a bit at Wood's Museum, New York, with Ixion; or, the Man on the Wheel. Where, however, a predisposition to Pulmonary disease exists, a Cough if left to Itself, strains and racks the Lungs and wastes the general strength, and soon establishes an Incurable complaint. In all cases, then, It is the safer plan to get rid of a Cough, Cold, or Hoarseness wlthent delay and for this purpose no remedy acts more promptly o surely, or with more benefit to the organs of tbe Chest, than Dr. D.
