THE DAILY EVENING ThJfillAniPniLADELPniA, SATURDAY, AUGUST 29, I8G8. OUR RELIGIOUS COLUMN. Scripture Meditations. 'And when the dew full npon the csmp In tb9 nlgct, (he manna full upon it" (Mumb, xl, .) Without the dew of the Holy Spirit's infla me,' all ia dry and sterile In the Church of Ood, aa well aa in the heart of the believer; but . rhen He Bweetly falls upon the camp, or iuto the Boul, what a reviving takes place 1 Then does CLrist, the true Manna, become the food Which nourishes and sustains through the Wilderness journey. How apt are the illus trations of the Divine word I the dew must first fall, then the manna appears; for, except the Holy Spirit prepares the way, Chriat cannot be received, nor fed upon by faith; the heart must lirst be softened by grace pre the preoiousiiesa of adding and a risen ' Saviour csu bu understood and apprehended; So can there le no aftor-mauifestation of Christ's love to the heart, unions it be 11 rat inellowed in and softened by the sweet influ ences of the Spirit, just aa warm sunshine (Succeeds the fructifying shower. 13ut it ia said the dew fell upon the camp in the night. What a beautiful emblem ia here 1 When it ia night in the soul, when all ia dead and dark within, when the beasts of tbe forest creep forth, and all the noisome repli'ea which in and iat.in can produce make tWr appear ance, so that the poor harassed one cries out, "Surely I am more trutidh than auy man," then, at the Very worst, in the darkest part of the right, the dew falls, the Holy Spirit de scends "aa small rain upon the tender herb." tnd reveals an all-snilicient Saviour for the Very vilest sinner; proving llini to be the choicest Manna, which alone cau satisfy the) spiritual appetitu, bringiug life, health and Vigor to the recipient thereof. Episcopalian. The Cross or ChrM. Tio Church will ever be honored in which tf'brist cjuoified is not continually lifted up. IN'otlih'g whatever can make up for the want of the cross. Without it all things may be done decently and in order. Without it there !::ny be splendid ceremonies, beautiful music, gorgeous churches, larned juiuu tera, crowded commuuion tables, huge col lections for the poor. But without the cross no cood will be done. Dark hearts Will not be enlightened, l'roud hearts will not be humbled. Mourning hearts will not le comforted. Fainting hearts will not lie cheered. Kermona about the Catholic Church and au apostolio ministry sermons about baptism and. the Lord's Supper ser mons about unity and schism sermons about fasts and communion sermons about fathers and saints such sermons will never make up for the absence of sermons about the oross of Christ. They may amuse some. They will feed none. A gorgeous banqueting room, and splendid gold plate upon the table, will never iuake up to a hungry man for the want of food. Christ crucified ia God's grand ordinance for doing good for men. Whenever a Church keeps back Christ crucified, or puts anything Whatever in that foremost place which Christ crucified should have, from that moment a Church ceases to be useful. Without Christ crucified in her pulpits, a Church is little bit ter than a cumberer of the ground, a dead carcase, a well without water, a barren fig tree, a sleeping watchman, a silent trumpet, a dumb witness, an ambassador without terras of peace, a me'ssenger without tidings, a light house without lire, a stumbling-block to weak Lelievers, a comfort to infidels, a hot-bed for formalism, a joy to the devil, and an offense to God. 'Episcopal ian. iiuiincr Work or the Clin re n. The Church Union replit-3 to the Independent as follows: "Many fcnbbaiu Schools are suspended. TbanS God that they are. ! I'or Ihe dear little chilJreU who compote them have ineuuwhile been hap pily removed from the ciiy'ei baked puvemouis to the country's greeu ileitis." Not a fact. Rarely half the children of any Sabbath School in the city are ever in the country at once. The rest are left here to "bake," neglected; perchance to burn. "Nothlnif Is added to the yearly sum total of vitality uud efliciency in u church or Sunday School by keeping a renulur servico running at a 'poor dying rate' during the sweltering heats of July uud August." Not on the commercial principle that run3 our churches. It takes vitality to keep up the ministrations of a church through the summer, and another sort than ecclesiastical engineers dream of. "Day r,eliool are always closed during a por tion of the summer; the sun lsjust a merciless to Sunday (School as to day school scholars; uud, if the one clats needs a vacation, the other needs It just us much." "The legs of the lame are not equal; so ia a parable in the mouth of a" special pleader. An hour of cheerful religious exercises once a week is a terrible strain, foi sooth ! very much like confinement to hard study throughout the week, not to be kept up without peril. Surely when school study is laid aside for the sum mer, the jnvenile constitution might bear the singing of two or three hymns, the reading of a few verses in the Bible, and a few minutes of religious conversation, once a week. Fangh 1 it is the laziness of the teachers that invents these lame excuses. The children love the Sabbath-school better. "Who hBS tbe care of souls in the summer time?" The Lord Uud ! Ills owu eye watches them, and His own baud foeda them both ia summer and in winter. lie 'urowuelh the your With His goodness.' 'He is not fur from us Hi any time.' He 'sends hU angels to keep guard concerning us, lest we dash our feel against a stone.' " That last Scripture has ben quoted before, and rather more correctly, if we remembar. We fear the care of souls would be left to the Lord Hod all the year round, if some people had their way. Why not in January aa much as in August? Have we any care of sould to answer for I VMS1AR r OF RE LIU 1 0 US NE WS. M12T1IOD13T. We aie plene.l to note tbo recognition of" 51ethoui,t autlioi-jbip b.v the t-otioluris ot Europe.
