THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPIIIA, SATURDAY, AUGUST 29, 18b A NEW YORKISMS. From Our Own CorretpontUnt. Niw Tobk, Ann. 29. "I bare something gweet to tell you," and (although some of the particulars must have reached yon ere this) 1 am obllftod to go further into details, because thn whole town la talklna about them at present. - No town lores acandal better than tbix, and no scandal Is better appre elated than theatrical scandal. As a rule, 1 admire actors and actresje, epelally the latter, and my sympathetic bosom swells to the capaolty of Abraham's when I hear that the "cast will embrace Md'ile Blondine," lor I should to like to be the cast. But I do not admire the way loading actors and leasees settle their prVate quarrcK I think the settling; ou-ht to be done In the green room, or bcnea'.h the staga anywhere except before ths footlights. I remarked In a previous letter that Lessee Lloyd, of the New York Theatre (lately knoo as the Worrell Haters'), acd leading actor Hr kins, tbe "Hobert rentala" of Foul Flay, hai disagreed about money matters. Ilovshends, and sheriffs' deputies, police couit Justice, supreme court justices, policemen, reporters, call-boys, leading Juveniles, utility men, heavy old women, and theatrlcHl properties got mixed up together in one heterogeneous and unravel lable mass, I am not going to detail hero. It is enough to say that from first to last the afT.ii has crowded the auditorium of the Broadway Theatre, to which Foul Piay was removed, with people and the treasury of the Broadway Thea tre with the greenbacks. Everybody goes there to see "what will bo the row to-ulght." Ever since last Monday evening crowds havo com jnenced to gather around the portals as soon as the stores began to close, and clerk, por ters, and store-boys felt themselves at liberty for the nlaht. In brief, everybody was in for a spree, and on Thursday night the spree came off, though not in the manner expected. Ou JUoDday uiebt the homicidal assault was made by the ruffianly hirelings of the Sheriff, O'Briun, I believe, was his name. On Wednesday night one of Mr. Lloyd's clerks (who, whatever other shamefaced sinners may do at doomsday, may safely be trusted not to do anything so becom ing as to call on the rocks and mountains to cover him, when his turn comes) skipped do vn the centre aisle of the theatre just when the climax of the play was reached, got over the orchestra rails (I don't know how be did it), and presented an injunction to Mr. Qarkins as if it had been a pistol. Every body expected it -would go off, but instead of its going off, Mr. Lloyd's clerk went off, and so quickly, too, that be might have vanished by spontaneous combustion for anything the audience could swear to tho contrary. Ttiis graceful episode enacted, the actors bethought themselves of their p'a and q's the piece and the cues I meau and the drama amicably proceeded. Ah this was very good, but not enough. Since Messrs. Harkin9 and Lloyd have gained so much pub licity a' ready, I am sure Philadelphlans will not grudge extending them those courtesies of the press which tbey have received in the metropolis. Thursday night the curtain went up, aud the actors went on, and the house came down, as usual. Just before the sccoud act was to com. mence, however, Mr. Harking stepped before the footlights, holdin in one hand a Brobdinaglan 5199. nail Ju the other a Lilliputian pamphlet. I believe that it is generally conceded that there was only one man upon the American stage who can make a speech, and that man is the versatile author of the Lot tery of Life. Notwithtanding sucha6room being in his way, however, Ur. Hark insmade one of the neatest speeches I have lately listened to, and begged to explain that an injunction having been served on bim, which pierluded his per foimicg in Foul Fiay.a produced at the New York Theatre, he would have the pleasure and honor of performing in the Foul Flay of Mr. Bouclcault's dramatization, as printed and per formed at the Holbom Theatre, Loudon. I frankly own that my sympathies in the first place were with Lloyd, thinking, as I did, that Harkins had no busioe?6 to take the money iu the till or, rather, out ot it; but they have Wheeled around in favor ot Hark inn, who, whatever may be suld to his discredit, has be haved in public with a forbearance which is in pleasing contrast to the conduct of his adver sary. Mr. Bergh's sympathies have lately been so exclusively enlisted in the interests of cattle, instead of cat", that he had no time to prosecute a kitten cannibal who was yesterday brought to the bar ot justice at the Tombs. Michael Norton, however, who bids fair to becoma a worthy successor of Bergh, when that gentleman shall have honorably devoted a fejr more years to the welfare of beasts, brought a charge against John Geary, the name of the miscreant in quefatloD, and accused him of biting off part of the leg ot a live kitteu. (Kitten shown up in Court with one of ber paws bitten off.) Mr. Geary's defense was that he was drunk at the time; that his comrades dared him to bite off the kitten's tail; that he made a mistake and got one of her legs in his mouth instead, and that in the confusion he bit off a paw. So Mr. Geary was committed to the Tombs. I am afraid, had he been with Don Juan at the shipwreck, he would have been the first to snatch at the spaniel's forepaw WUlch Juan handed to Fedrlllo, who Devoured It, louglug for the other, too." Once in a while a thief evinces a legerdemain of mind and rnuecle worthy of a better cause. This was the case with "Dutch Hendricks," a thief who is notorious for the successful raids he has made on bunks aad mail bags, bis pecu lianty being that he always manages to escape conviction. Of course he has numerous a'iases the last one that he gave being that of Edward Marks. The latest chef (Twuvre he attempted was robbing Mr. Patrick Dickey, a gentleman aged seventy-five, of $15,000 in Government bonds. How he managed to abstract the wallet containing them, from Mr. Dickey's pocket, is known only to the police and the agile-fingered brothers and sisters of "Dutch II el a diicks." Mr. Picksy dil not miss th0 wallet uiitil be was emerging from a Seventh avenue car, at the terminus on Barclay street, near Broadway. At that moment he observed a young man, who had sat beside him iu the car pass rapidly through Bushtou's drug store, which ' is at the corner ot uarciay street ana uroaaway entering It on the Barclay street side and imme dlately reissuing on the Broadway. "Stop thief I stop thief 1" set up by Mr. Dickey became in a moment the general cry and in another iuotur.t "Dutch Heindricks1 and a bystander named Burnell, who endeavored to obey Mr. Dickoy's fivtu'.ic injuuc tloo. were spraw I11 fc'ogcflher on tho sidewalk bytheAslor II tuelr garments mutually torn in a highly inflecorons manner. Police mm came up; "Dutch neitdrlcki" wasarrestei, but the wallet and the $15,000 In Government bonds were nowhere to be found. Charles Beade's "Ye-y Hard Cash," or Wiikle Collins' "Moonstone," never more mysteriously van 'shed, and since nothing can be proved against "Dutch Helndrlcks," except that be rushed in at one door of Mr. Ruhtou's store and out at the other, I pre3um ' Dutch Heludricks" will be set free. It is rumored, here that Dr. T. 8. Booth, the oldest brother of Edwin Booth, is to reappear upon the stage this fall, after an absence of twenty years, home of Dr. Booth's Philadelphia irlcuds ought to know whether there is any 'rath In this report. Did I mention to you the pedestrian Gould lug's intention to out-walk all other pedestrians, past, present, or to come? Tho performance he has prescribed for himself is the walking of five hundred miles in five hundred consecutive quarter-hours, or one mile every quarter of an hour until the whole fivo hundred are com pleted. The tin e required is about five days and a quarter, and if John comes out nil right I shall be sorry for his own Hake. Somebody sajs that nothing is so unfor tunate for a man as to get well out of a scrape. I presume that the eomeb3dy thought It hardened him, and made him recklees for the future. Just so with John. His 1000-mile waik aodlcd his brains, according to his own confes sion, and now he is addling them over b?rtd by a feat whose magnitude the average pedestrian can form no conception of. The next achieve merit, of cnuw, will be 1000 miles In 1000 con secutive ten minutes. But one would think that my pen was a pedestrian at the rate at which it is'going, so that I am glad I have reached the goal, where I may sign myself A li Bada. C 1 TY ITE 31 S.
