THE DAILY EVENING TKLKGR A Pit PHILADELPHIA, FIUDAY. AUGtTST 28, 1803. GREEK BRIGAND S A Chapter of rational History. TLe London Atlier.iruni say: "JSrigaudage appears to to a perilom par T0)1,even in disturbed And weak Stale, lor 1 robber chief generally eouiea to grief at ast, in spite of temporal tucoesaea ami of the lociil terror aud 8ubiui.-t.itou which the to rutation of a few tutlilesa acU may create-, lint the reflection that the captors will prob ably come to the gallows at last is a poor ooa solation to those who, like Mr. Mohuj in Italy, and M. sottiropoulos iu Greece, have livod for many weary week iu present misery, aal Ttith death before their eyes, conscious that the iru'.jeMy ofpoveruineut was not ouly poorer less to reccue them, but was actually woikiug heart ahd soul to prevent the delivery of the racHooi. "Mr. Sottiropoulos, a renpeolable landowner of the More a, wtio lived by the produce of hi Email estate, which produce, consisting prinoi pally oi currauta aud other fruits, he a ad his lauiily in person helped to gather iu, was nevtiilielef a a member of the lluu.-ie of Asseiu hly, and, as far as we can Bee, a genlleuiiu iu every way, though a gentleman of rattier moderate means when compared with the mil lionaires of Western Europe. It is the oui toiu, he writes, for the landowners iu Greece to reside upon their estates during the sum mer aid autumn, iu ord.ir that they may be able 1o superintend the gathering and drying oi the fiuitd On his little estate at Agrile, ou the western coast of the Peloponnesus, be tween Kyparinsia and 1'hiliatris, iu the month of J uii, atter his parliamentary duties were over, Mr. Sottuopouloa 'was living with his family, ocoupiel iu collecting the fruits.' The extent of the pioperty was almost ludicrously sraU, according to our Kaglish notions; butittnust be remembered that iu parts of Greece where the laud is really good, the produue iu a given space is more valuable tlna it would bs iu our northern latitude. A cargo of exoelleut diied currauta may spring out of a very sua til plot of land, and may briug to the diligent Arcadian a solid return 111 Western gold. Even looking at the estate iu question in this way, it certainly was rather small; for by the Statistics and comparison of laud measures given in the early prt of the book, we caanot make out that it consisted of more thau about thirty-six acres. It had, however, thealvan tage of being near the harbor of Agrile, which a Horded an easy exit for ita produce; and when we are told that it was pre-emineut for ita fertility, and might be expected iu time to produce 00,000 pounds of currants, 1000 okes of sultana raisins, and from 10,000 to 12,000 okes of wine, and, moreover, that it took about 30 laborers to gather in the har barvefct, we may perhaps value it approxi mately at from 2000 to 3000 sterling. "The proprietor of this little estate was seized by brigands in the midst of his pleasaut labor, and was obliged to pay from first to last, 70,(i00 drachmas, or X'JoOO, before he could obtain his release. As a member of the House of Assembly, he was no doubt looked upon by the half-wise, half-ignorant robbtira as a 'heavy swell,' a gentleman of aristocratio position, to whom it would be almost an insult to propose a small sum by way of ransom. Mr. Sottiropoulos believing that the sum de manded was greater than the whole value of bis property, took a different view of the case, but was unable ti convince his amiable captors Of the correctness of his estimate. "In reading through this narrative we see pretty well what are toe views and principles of Greek bn'gands, aud we perceive a tolerably close alliiiity between these aud their brethren of the Italian peninsula. We find the same hollow pretence of political motives, the same genuine thirst after money, the same determi nation to keep up the prestige of the profes sion by sullering no captive to escape alive without ransom. In the picture drawn by Llr. Sottiropoulos, as in that given by Mr. Aloens, all romantio fancies of picturesque life disappear in a moment, and the reality of "urigandage presents itself as a oompouud of falsehood, ignorance, selfishness, and dirt. The Greek, however, seems to be superior to his Italian brother in good nature, aud thore is a comical pathos in the farewell interview of the deputy with his captors, who kissed him and wished him all sorts of happiness, appa rently in sincerity at the moment, though, iiicy had nearly wrung his life out with hard ships, and hail told him daily daring his cap tivity that their rules would compel them to slay him n tue ransom did not come. I lie usual threat of these amiable creatures-seema to be, that if the rarsom is not forthcoming, they will send the captive's head home to his relations 'to be made into a pie.' This plea sant phrase occurs in the following letter, written to Madame Sottiropoulos, which affords so graphio a picture of the particular kind oi piessure which is brought to bear upon the relatives and lrienda of captives that we need not make any apology for giving it iu full: A brigand's letter. " 'TLis evening, at a place called Agril9, we have taken captive Mr. ti. Sottiropoulos, a member of the House of Asr-embly, aui we demand eighty thousand drachma for his ransom: Therefore take care to get ready the ransom money, that Mr. Sottiropoulos may see bis home again, for otherwise yoa will receive Lis Lead. These Franks, wno involve the Whole woild in dissension, and trouble the poor people, must bear the blame on their own throats. They cut off some of us Pallekaria every day, and if I may not dye my bullet with the blood of one Frank, wlte we do not receive the ransom money, how then shall the Pallekaria be able to preserve their reputation and to oontinue their system f We strictly com mand you to make no stir, but to keep the matter secret. Look well to it: do not put forward the friends of Mr. Sottiropoulos aud cause them to hunt after us, for in that case We will cut off his head, aud afterwards fight against the Lunters like Pallekaria, who know Low to make the blood flow when their own lives are in danger. Uy no means tell the affair to the Government, nor permit the mili tary or gendarmes to pursue us, for you shall xever see Mr. Sottiropoulos again. Take good care, also, that you do not act as did the wife of Eambas of Spezzio, for she stirred up the Government to pursue us, and when we Palle karia were lighting with the soldiers, the Ill fated Eambas called out to them to go away, but they did not hear Lim, and so we slew Lim, in order that they might not take him alive, and we be put to shame; act then aa you wish, if you love your husband. After five or seven daya yoa shall receive from ua directions about the ransom money, how aud where to take it; and notice, this money must be all in gold, no paptr money, and no silver. Together with the money you will also send us back this letter, as well as that which you shall receive here after. Ypu must not come without these let ters, for if you do not briug them we will send you the head ol Mr. Sottiropoulos. Take care not to bring any false coin, becanpe the head of Mr. Sottiropoulos, aud your own also, ha? no life when separated from the body. Reflect on this ulso, lady; you Lave not to dral with Earnibazia that is, 1 1 women, ioolish per sens who may be eu-ily deceived or iutiiui daled but with Fjj.te.iuat if, provisional bri fp.iid.4 r.rd i'al'eket i.s; rii'.l iriuf-mb-r thu ilii ut all-in. a kw oi tin: liicai-:Is i, tj rand the Lead of the captive if they do not receive the miscm money. These are directions which jou are to observe; and take care not to treat the n atter with indifference, for tf we do not receive the ransom money we will fend jou the head of Mr. Sottiropoulos to make into a pie. Therefore take care to provide the ransom money. So far as concerns Mr. Sottiropoulos himself, have no piifpicions about his welfare; he will live as well heie as in his own house, for we know that these eminent men have been delicataly brought up, end we will take care of him. And know that we especially hunt after men of this class for this reason, namely, be cause they who now perseente us, did at the first use us, the Pallekaria, as their right hands in the revolutions of Nauplia and Athens, in the months of February and Juue. How many Pallekaria have your husband an I his great associatea deceived and then laughed at f And now they make out as if they had not known tLeui. Nevertheless you shall have Mr. Sottiiopoulos back again in his house after an interval of ten daya, if you send U3 the ransom n.oney, according to the estab lished rule and custom of the brigands, which we have above explained to you. These things, and we remain, Tub Unknown.' " Tliauilnis Stevens anil James Hiiclianan. George Alfrd Townend writes from Lancas ter to the Hartford Posts "I have picked up a few anecdotes of Stevens and his neighbor Euchanau. "Mr. James Shnnk, a son-in-law of Jerry Rlack, relates that he was engaged by the ex Pre.ident to prepare some anecdotes and tketchea of his life. Mr. Shunk found this task very onerous by reason of the extreme jealou.-iy of Mr. Eiichauan aa to what should be printed of him. He possessed no literary at tainments of the prompt, readable newspaper fort, and once when he had read some of the manuscuript the old man rubbel his hands and laughed in his Hat, cold way. " 'Ha ha-ha I Oh l Mr. Shunk, if my life were to bejin again I would not be a lawyer. This journalism is going to be the big profession in this country. The 1 iwis very jealous, and it over-disciplines the mind, making the lawyer unlit for this closet com bat ol the newspaper. When one gets a com petence by the law he is lit ouly for a lawyer's politics. Keep to the newspaper, sir I Keep to the newspaper 1' ANECDOTE OF BCCIIANAIf. "A sojourner at Wheatland, iu the latW years of Mr. Euchanan'a lite, related to me, the other day, this quaint aud recoguhsable in cident of the ex-President: "Enter, with much crude modesty, hat in hand, tba son of a farmer neir by. To him old Euck, looking his most Arctic countenance. Great anguish and pedal prevarication of the boy. "Boy: 'Mister Bewcannin, sir, if you please why ! there's a gentlemau staying at my daddy's, aud, ah ! ah ! sir. being as he kue.v that we knew you, why " 'And where is this gentleman, sir V asked Buchanan, with au ice-cream freezer of a voice, trembling on the edge of the tsni'ole. " 'lie's right here in the hall, sir.' " 'Go briug him in, sir-r-r !' "As the boy disappeared Buchanan turned to my informant and said: " 'Another - Yankee !' "The stranger came in, an oflber of some Eort, evidently resolved to sympathize with Buchanan and take his inventory. If he ex pected a feeble old presentment of a WoUey in soliloquy he must have been petrified with the old man's height, fire and ice together. The soenv was too much for the third party. He felt forths intruder, aud vanished to spire Lim the sceue. "In a half hour S. heard the old laugh, col l and low and measured, of the President. IJU peeped in, aud found that the mau hal com pletely conquered Buchanan, so that they were getting on even humorously together. '"Well!" said old Buck, afterward, 'he wasn't so bad a man, after all I' STEVENS, BUCHANAN, AND THE DOCTORS. "Stevens and Buchanan were attended in life and to the end by Dr. Carpenter, a Demo crat, whom some rabid people once advised Stevens to put away because of the value of his lite to the country, and the danger of a copperhead pill. The old man opened his door: " 'Go out !' he said, 'Dr. Carpenter is my friend. Il you begin to interfere iu my house Lold economy, God knows where you wil. stop.' "Stevens sent Buchanan book's and favora from Washington down to the last, oil Back said, in reply to the bystanders: " 'Thaddeus and I ought to be friends, but it's his fault. It pleased Providence, in his inscrutable will, to create Thaddeus with a good head and a good heart, but he left the moral part out of him.' "Dr. Carpenter relates that Stevens took all his medicine with a grim readiDess, saying: 'Well, just fix up anything, and I'll swal low it.' "Mr. Buchanan hated medicine, aad triodto avoid it. He died of gout, aud was obliged to shorten Lis rye whisky rations at the last punch to his chagrin; but Stevens never drank Irom middle life to the close thereof without the doctor's orders. He had been kept alive during the whole of the last Congress by stimulants." A correspondent of the Cincinnati Commer rial writes: STEVENS AND LIQUOR. "When he came to Lancaster, he made up Lis mind never to drink again, and this he kept until his physicians forced upon him 1'iask'd beer and Misheler's bitter?, and other Lancaster beverages. He left his estate so that his nephew, who is fond of the bowl, shall only get it after a long and successful temperance probation. Stevens has often said of liquor: " 'I have no Late of it, but an abiding fear of it. It is responsible for death, slavery, pre- judice, and all the other Democratic monu ments. ' I "At the same time Mr. Steven3 was incon ! tiseut enough to use beer aud whisky libe j rally in electioneering. I have talked to two ; or three of his constituents to whom he would say: " 'James, yon go to Frank'a sometluie3 f It is coming ou election time. 1 you see souie of my friends up there, just treat them, and Eend me the bill.' " HIE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION. "Edwaid McPhersou told me of the iuflu este Stevens had upon the Emancipation Pro clamation. Many months before it appeared he n ade a speech urging absolute and imme diate enfranchisement, and this he sent to the Prtsident. Some days atterwaids he hobbled up to the White House, where he fouud Lin coln perusing this document. The President ditw a long breath, directly, saying: " 'Ah ! Thad, 1 guess we'll have to come down to this yet.' "'You ought to have come up to it long 80 1 said Stevens, bluntly. HOW BUCHANAN "cut" BTEVflNH. "lie was an uncompromising hater of masses of lnei), ftnl ol the id. as they held, but lilted ft w ij di iiiuals. Si.id Buchanan, his couiti tu i: "ili.ldt.-ufl vmI I otiht to ha7e been friends, but it'g rot my fault. He not only suida to me from Washington the publiodoou ments, but Le buys books and seuda them to me.' "And then Buchanan relapsed into Lis solil oquy upon the moral part of Thaddeus so in scrutably omitted, whereas, in, fact, it was he who took offence at Stevens, and deliberately cut Lim at a company. THR KEWSrAPEB CORRESPONDENTS. "lie frequently invented and related with felicity anecdotes aud excuses, some of which got to the newspapers, and then he arose in Congress cold-bloodedly and denied them with a reckless jest. The Tribune folks were ranglit in this way by Stevens two or three times. Aa a consequence all the orthodox newppaper men in Washington disliked him, notwithstanding his sociability. One day Stills on, of the Democratic Frr.is, went to see Lim, saying: 'Mr. Stevens, I am a Democrat, and yon may not like to speak to me.' " 'I have no opinions to conceal, sir t' said Stevens. 'Be seated.' "But once, at Lancaster, a Ihrahl reporter came to Lia house for a conversation, when one of Stevens' law students (Mr. Diokey, I believe,) slipped out and got n phonograplier, who, at a table in the back office, concealed, took down the whole of the re'uaiks of the parties."
