In the last number of the Lou Jon Art Jour nal we liud some nw information about Tur ner, of whom hitherto we have kuown almost as little personally as of William yhakepi-are. Mr. Llewellynn Jewitt writes to the Art Jour nal that at the sale of the elects of a family living in one of the most secluded spots in the High Peak of Derbyohire Brooklinld, near llathersage "two charming early drawings by J. M. W. Turner have within the last few mouths most unexpect edly 'turned Tip,' aud alter remaining iu the family to which they were preseuted by iln great master in 1824, have beeu brought to the hammer and dispo&ed of." The drawings, which are companions, are each of the same Eize, thirteen inches by nine; one is called 'Coast Scene Sunrise," the other "A Moun tainous Laudscaps." They were preseutrtd by the painter to his old Irieud James Uoltfor thy, also an artist, on the occaiiou of his mar riage, and it would seem that llolworthy, not fully understauding that they were a gift, must have written to Turner asking orhiutiug something as to their price. This drew from Turner the following curious aud interesting letter, which had been carefully preserved by the family, and was exhibited at the sale: Ai'im-.Sti, IS'J-I, Pear llol worthy: I ahall feel uncomlurlalde if fcnyiliiti Mtioulu lo mis ume give you aiiy pain, but wini I look bu-n upm tUe length of lime you look lo nek uovyiutlge the receipt ol the druwiiiRS, and wutibeld t ue pleasure 1 1'xpecteu ot ai leant Hearing It Mrs. llol worthy (to whom la your mutual liapplueiH, 1 certainly presented one) unproved; tmtyour letter mats mhiso hue a commission, limt I feel my pi Ide wounded and my l!iilupeulRiice be i zed. 1 should be itappy to receive any pre teuls of recollection you may, wiiu Mrs. ii., thiuit of to seud me, and will kei p alive my lil(ili ccnsiiltrationu, but money lei out of the question In the present ease. It gives me great pleasure to hear from Mr. J'hlllipR of your comforts at Ureeu Kill, and 1 may, perhaps, If you have as great a regard lor auld Iiiiim; syne uh tovself, wit ness all, and though I mav not ever bo messed with hail, yet you may b. lleve me t liat, It gve me the greatebl pleasure to liear, an 1 will con tlnne toelve to Urn end of tins sroinuary tur moil, lor 1 do not mean my conilorts or miseries lo be any ineasuie of i tie hue In others. Wlien yon come to town I have a greai. many Interro gations to make not in (lool)i, lint for want of t xperlenco In Ihette nu tters, and I do not hesi tate to acknowledge It In oll'. rln mv respects to WrH. Holworthy. Believe me lo he, dear Hol Worthy, yi.urs most truly, J. M. W. TuitNttK. J. lloLWOHTilY, Ksq., Green 11111. At the sale the two drawings fetched the pum of i.'540. Mr. Jewitt says, "Another highly interesting Turner relic was brought to light at the same time. It is a round biiull' iox, two and live-eighths inches in diameter, made out of the lava of Mount Vesuvius, Which Turner used as a pallette during his tour, and which he presented to his friend Ilolworthy. This interesting relio sold for i'0'0. A splendid copy of the 'Liber Studio mm,' with the autograph of Turner, was also disposed of at the sale, and realized JL'195." Chinese Street Jugglers. A letter from China to the Chicago Tribune pays: "Street jugglers and mountebanks abound In Canton, and in fact in every Chinese city. They also travel from place to place through out the country, displaying their feats aud picking up a few cash here and there. As a general thing their juggling feats do not amount to a great deal, yet some of them are Very clever, and would create fully as much of a theatrical furore in the United States as did the Japanese performers. Sword swallow ing aud Btoue-eating appear to be the coni lnoneBt feats, and operators of this description tan be Eeen in almost every street. One fellow, however, performed a numbHr of feats In front of our hotel which demand from me more than a passing notkH. lie 6ta tioued himself in the centre of the Etreet, and having blown a blast upou a bugle to give warning that he was about to bgiuhis entertainment, he toik a small lemou or Oiange tree, which was covered with fruit, and balanced it upon his head. Ho th n blew a golt o' (1 inup'ng whintle, when immediately a fin in) -' of l ii i- I'ir ' i.iui- trom rv -ry dir. tion and tctticd ui'i'J lb ; Wi.ilis ol' tiic bu-.h jnEJYJTOg- ELjRAl?j he balanced, or fluttered abiTnt.lits head. He then took a cup in his hand And began to rattle some feeds in it, when the bin'. disap peared. Taking' a small bamboo tube, ha next took the seeds, aud putting on in it blew it at one of the fruit, when it opened, and out flew one of the birds, which lluttered about the circle Burronnding the performer. Ue continued to shoot his seeds at the oranges until nearly a dozen birds were re leased. He then removed the tree from his forehead, and setting it down, took up a dish, w hich he held above his head, whu all the birds IW into it, then covered it over with a cover, and, giving it a whirl or two about his head, opened it and displayed a quality of the snells of wLioh he broke with a little Mick, releasing a bird from evdi shell. The tiick was neatly performed, aud detlei detec tion from my eyes. The next trick wn equally clever and" difficult of detection. IJ.jr lowing a handkerchief from one of his specta tors, he took an orange, cut a mill hile in it, then Rqueezed all the juice out, aud eraintmil the hmidkercbief into it. Giving the haud kerchief to a bystander to hnld, he caught up a tea-pot, and began to pour a cup of tea from it, w ben the spout became clogged. Looking into the pot apparently for the purpose of de tecting what was the matter, he pulled out the handkerchief, and returned it to the owner, lie next took the orange from the bystander, and cut it open, when it was found to lie lull of rice. He performed a number of very plea-ing frats, but 1 have given enough to satisfy the reader that they are equally as i Xpert as the Japanese." EWING MACHINES.
