Lev. Dr. Gray, Chaplain of the Sena'e, then
delivered the following addre?s: "Citizens of
Lancaster and people of I'ctjn-jlvnrjla We have
brought home your illustrious dead not yourj
only, but ours not ours, but the natiaa's. Our
journey from the Capital to your city was
marked, very appropriately, by flags flying at
talr-mast: by the tolling of bells, and by the
tears ot the people; and to-day, while we are
here enswged in tbese sad obsequies, could we
hear, there would come to our tnrs from a(ar the
Wail o."s no w and the sounds of grief.
"Could we see, we ehould bhold, not indivl"

"Well done. Come np bicber." Aad now till
the morning ot the resurrection, we commit all
that remains ot our departed friend to the (irave,
and to the I'liai-dianship of that God who watches
alike over flic living nnd ti e dead, anil as the
mouth ol' the grave closes on the sacred dust,
we will pray God to give to Vermont another
son; to Lancaster another citizen; to Pennsyl

patriot: to the poor another friend; to freedom
another advocate; to the race another bpnel'ao

The procession moved precisely at three
o'clock in the order set down by the Committee
of Arrangements, moving up South Queen
street to Centre Square, UP Kast King street to
Duke stieet, thence to Chesuut street and along
that to Schreiner's Cemetery.
While the procession was in motion the bells
tolled, all the stores wtre cloted and nearly
every house along the route was draped in
mourning.
Arother attempt is now being mado by a
Mr. Cooper to find a practicable route through
China to India. Mr. Cooper left the China
coast about eight or nine menths ago, and
travelled westward by way of the Yang-tsze-kiang,
following the route taken by Colonel
Bareland his party hi 1SC1, but with, better
euccess. Iu the beginning of March he arrived
at Cbk'g-tu, the capital of Sze-chuen, a place
dutant from Shangbae in a straight line more
than a thousand miitrS. Here he found the
IVepaulese Embassy on their way to Pekin,
detained at Ching-tu on account of the dis
tuiLed state of the country between that
place aid the capital. Mr. Cooper, taking
advantage of the ambassador's presence,
asked bitn for a letter to show to the Nepau
lese cfiiciaU on the Thibetan frontier, but this
was dee-lined on the ground that there was
'no law between Kepaul and hngiaud."
After a few days' ptay at Chiug'-tu, Mr.
Cooper started for Ta-tssieu-lu, the last Chinese
town on the borders of Western China. The
last letter irom him is tl.tti d Hi zau-ki, Mareh
28, a place five days' journey from Ta-toien-lo,
for which town he intended to start on ihe
7th of April. After leaving Ta tsien-lu. two
rentes to Calcutta! will be open to him, the one
by liat.hang and Sudya, the other by I.assa.
Mr. Cooj er iuteuded to try Die former of these
routes.
