THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, TUESDAY, AUGUST 11, 18G3.

CBLESTTAL OnsKRVATIOtlS IS TUB SoDTHBRIC
Hemibpiikke. -The expedition Bent out from
England under Lieut. John Hersohel to ob
serve tn Aslt the great eol I pne on the 17th of
Angnat next, have already done useful work.
With epeotroBoope furnished by the Iioval
Bociflty six nebolm have been examined, the
great nebula in Argo preaeuta a spectrum of
bright lines, like those exhibited by the great
nebula of Orion, and la thus proved to be in
the gaseous state.
Tun ArrnoACH or Sinius. Mr. lluggina has
made a pnbtle application of spectroscopic)
BimljMp, by which he determines whether a
celestial body is Bpproaching or receding in
consequence of a change in the refrangibiiitiHs
of light produced by a modification of thu
ethereal waves. He announces as one of the
remaikable resultd of his investigations that
the bright fixed filar Sinus ia approauhiog the
solar bvsteua at the rate of miles par
second.
MEAPcrtxa TBi.rsxorpi. The Ordnance Se
lect Counnitteo of the War Department of
Great Britain have approved of the telescope
patented by Messrs. Elliott Brothers, London,
which enables the distance of either infautry
or cavalry to be computed instantaneously.
The distance is obtained by means of two
wirt'B moved by a dieo, on Which are divisions
showing the remoteueps of the objeot, which
is in ratio to the proximity of the two wires
between which it is seen. The motion of the
wirtB is produced by a double eccentric moviug
round the smaller tube of the telescope.
Bisorpf.n'h Cojiet. This comet, discovered
in the year 140, was missed at the perihe
lion paspage in 151. It was seen in 1S57,
again missed in lk02, and re-disooverd in
April, iU8. It must not be confounded with
another bearing the same name and revolving
in a more extended orbit. The comet just
discovered has been subjected to 8pnotroBoopio
analysis by Mr. Hupgins of London. The
epeotrnm consists of three bright bauds, re
Bembling those Been in the spectrum of Do
nates comet. Their length proves that they
are not due to the nucleus of the comet alon'i,
but are partly the result of the light of the
coma. It appears that the nucleus and nearly
the whole of the coma of this comet are solt
luminons. New ritocEBS fob Makiso Steel. An in
tention explained at a recent Conversazione of
the Institution of Civil Engineers, London,
consists in grinding pig iron to powder, by a
very rapidly-revolving cutter. The great
beat generated sets the particles of metal on
fire, and after scintillating, they fall down in a
reddish brown dust, which is gathered, placed
in a crucible, and melted. When cooled this
melted dust is found to be ingots of very gooi
steel. It is claimed that the carbon is all
burned out, which is, probably, true; but the
act of burning has produced an oxide of iron,
in other words, reduced the iron again to ore.
If the process is modified bo as to produce
good steel, still it must be far more expensive
than that of Bessemer, or the ordinary mode
of making steel from wrought iron.
Tbanskokmation op OkOahic Bodies into
IItdkoCakiions. Professor Berthelot of the
College of France lias described a simple pro
cess by which hydrogen may be substituted
for all other elements found in combination
With carbon in organio bodies. The reagent
used by him is an aqueous solution of hydri
odio acid of density 2. The quantity of acid
employed, always in excess, is greater in pro
portion as the organio substance to be decom-
Eosed is deficient in hjdrogen. Both are
eated in a sealed tube to G27 degrees Fahr.
for ten hours. A series of changes take plaoe
which result in transferring the hydrogen in
the acid to the carbon and forming compounds
generally homologous with marsh gas, or
hydride of ethyl. Alcohols, ethers, aldehydes,
' acids, aromatic carburets, alkaloids, complex
xdtrogenized bodies, when heated, are broken
np by the superior saturating power of hydro
gen, which, under these conditions, displaoea
the strongest electro-negative elements,
t Chemical Chakqbs. Mr. A. Vernon Ilar
court, of London, eloses a paper "On the rate
at which Chemical actions take place," with
the following propositions which embody the
prinoipal conclusions to which an examination
of the cited cases of gradual chemical change
has led: 1. The rate at which a chemical
change proceeds is constant nnder eonstant
conditions, and is independent of the time that
lias elapsed since the change commenced. 2.
When any substance is nndergoing a chemical
change, of which no condition varies, except
ing the diminution of the changing substance,
the amount of change occurring at any mo
ment is directly proportional to the quantity
of the substance. 3. When two or more sub
Stances act one upon another, the amount of
action at that moment is direotly proportioned
to the quantity of eaoh of the substances. 4.
When the rate of any chemical change is
affected by the presence of a substance, which
itself takes no part in the change, the accele
ration retardation produced is directly pro-
Fortional to the quantity of the substance.
. The relation between the rate of a chemical
change ooourring in a solution, and the tem
perature of the solution is such that for every
additional degree the number expressing the
rate ia to be multiplied by a oonstant quantity,
New Device fob Mancfactdbino Sulphuric
Acid. The apparatus, invented by M. Lar
dani, consists of a furnace for burning eulphar
And forming sulphurous acid; a washer or
Bornbber; a refrigerator; a reacting vessel; and
a regenerator for nitric acid. The warm sul
phurous acid gas, made by burning sulphur
and forced out of the furnace by a current of
air, which furnishes oxygen, enters the sorub
ber and is freed from volatilized sulphur, and
especially arseniona acid when arsenical py-
rites is used, as the source of sulphur. After
passing through the refiigerator it enters the
reacting vessel, composed of two pans, the
lower containing nitric acid and the upper
pumice-stone, resting on plates of lead or alu
minium, pierced with holes. The gas passes
through the nitrio acid, and, after receiving
another equivalent of oxygen, it sinks, in the
form of sulphurio aeid, to the bottom, while
the hyponitrio escapes through the pumice
etone, and, traversing the upper part of the
apparatus, entera the regenerator, where,
meeting with an excess of oxygen, it is trans
formed into nitrio acid, and ready to be used
again in oxidizing sulphurous acid. The oom- j
parative economy of this process we are un
able to give, but any plan for cheapening the
production of the most important mineral acid
will excite great interest among manufactur
ing chemists.
