THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, FMDAY, JULY 3, 1868. 5 Is IT TIonbst? Manufacturers of ShulUo or Lock-Stitch Sewing-Machines, who make this class of machines only, would have ths public believe 'that the ehuttlc-stitch alono cau or ought to be used In any of the various Indus tries in vshich the Sewing Machine Is employed. Let us examine with how much reason, truth, Or honesty they seek to force this conviction, ttnd what methods they employ. Tbey claim that the Bhuttle stitch Is "alike on both sides" of the material. XZ is true that the shultlc-stltch can be mnde alike on bo.h sides" of thick c'o'h or leather by expert operators: but that this stitch forms a perfect seam "alike od both sides" of thin mate rial is noltruc, ru every Sewing Machine operator knows. They claim "economy of thread" lor the shut tle stitch. Jits true that the quantity of thread con tained iu a eiven length of team is lc?s than is contained In the sunn; leugtn of seam hewed With the (Jtovcr A Baker stitch; but it is a! so rtftbat from four to six inches of thread is Wasted at each end of every shuttlj-stitch seam, short or long, la order to secure the ends, and an equal or greater quantity of thread is wasted at the en 1 of each bobbin. 1'. is also true that a large amount of (imp t ; wasted in fasten ing the ends of seams by hand, in rewinding the thread on little bobblus every half hour, and readjusting the machine and work after every interruption. They claim that the shuttle stitch will no "rip or ravel." if is true that it is dillictiH to remove a shuttle stitch seam, although it i very desirable some times to do 60, but it is equally true Mm th Shuttle stitch wi'lrip out in wear if the seam is cut or broken, or the ends left unfastened. Not satisfied with claiming for their machine all the merits tbey possess, as well as many which they do not possess, these manufacturer wilfully mbrcprefeut the Grover & Baker stitch (their great lival), and unblushingly publibh false statements in regard to it and the ma chines making it. Tbey say that the Grover & Baker stitch wastes thread; thU the seam is insecure and Will ravel; and that the stitch is only fit lor em broidering. How they know, and every one of the two hundred 'housand users of the Grover & biker stitch machines know?, that there is not any thread was'ed in making the C rover & Biker stitch; that the thread used by this stitch enters into the material, aud no more is used than is necefsary to make the sam strong and clastic; that the amount of thread thus used iu ordinary seams is not more than is used and wasted by the sbuttle-btitch in short seams it is less. There is no time wasted in fastening endsof thread, nor iu winding bobbins, in making the Grover & Baker stitch; nor in adjusting the ma chine and work after frequent and vexatious interruptions, as the threads are fed to the ma. Chine directly from the spools, and Jhere is no necessity for once stopping the machine during the process of working up two spools of thread, Of whatever size. They know, and every one of the two hundred thousand users of the Grover & Baker stitch ma chimes knows, that the Grover & Baker stitch wi't not rip or ravel in wear, that the seam may be cut at every tixth stitch and still remain ilrm, but that if required, the seam or any part of it can be removed with facility. They know, also, that the Grover & Baker etltch. machine is capable of doing the largest range of family sewing, from the very Quest to the coarsest; that the work it dors is more clas. tic, more durable and more beautiful than work done by fchuttle-siitch machines, as attested by the numerous prizes awarded lor it at exhibi tions and fairs thioughout the civilized world, in compeiitiou with the work of the shuttle, stitch; and that the capacity of the Grover & Baker Machine for executing the most beautiful embroidery is an additional quality, aud a branch of machine-sewing in which it stands without a rival. For many purpo-es the rhuttle-stileh ma chines answer well, aud lor such purposes they are excrllcnt machines. Tney are well adapted for manufacturing thick and heavy materials not subjected to much straining, aud thai do not require to bo washed and ironed. This stitch being inclustic, is not a lapted for dress or cloak making, or family sewinir. For these purposes, it ifl generally conceded that the Grover & Baker stitch is the best. The still more ex'erhive use of the Grover & Bilker Stitch Machines lor family scaIuj; is especially desirable for the two following rea sons. First The ailicles manufactured by this etltch will wear longer tban those made with the shuttle-stitch, as the seam outlasts the garments; and hence the use of the Grover & Baker stitch on articles that are to be washed and ironed will prove an incalculable saving to the country. Second The many difficulties and ennoyanctB experienced oy women, not expert Operators, in adjusting the intricate machinery necessary to lorm the shuttle-stitch, have a ten dency to weaken their faith in the general use fulness ol Sewing Machines, and discourage their employment iu the hoasehold. Tho great simplicity of the Grover & Baker Stitch Ma chines rspeeiully tits them for use in lamllies; While, to the skilled opi-rator they offer the Widest field for the most elaborate, ornamental, and fancy woik. Parties interested in shuttle-stitchlhnachincs only may be dupo-ed to question the souudness Of these Uews; but if the public ft ho desire to purohane Sewing Machines will use the proper iccaus to ascertain lor themselves, by actual tptt which of the two stitch es is best adapted for their purpose, ai.d c5t be misled by the fctatements of interested purtie", and if that purpose is family sewin-r, tbey will not select the shuttle-stitch.
