Colonel James, of Urban a, is writing ft History of the New Church in America. Bishop Simpson lectured in Wesley Chapel, Cincinnati, on Monday evening, upon "The Life and Character of Abraham Lincoln." Mr. Jay Cooke has built a beautiful meet ing house for the Metb.od.iats at Girardville, I'a., and the Rev. D. D. Hudson has been appointed its pastor. The new Methodist Episoopal meeting house at Canton, Pa., of which the Rev. J. Thompson is pastor, is to be dedicated on the 9th of January. The Rev. Dr. MattUon, of Jersey City, will preach. 'The Treasurer of the General Convention of the New Jerusalem Church in the United States has received $13,227-53, towards a $20,000 fund for publishing Swedenborg's works, and keeping the same for sale in the depository. During the last six years twenty-two Con gregational and three Independent churches have been organized in Northern Illinois, and forty-three houses of worship have been erected, all but eight by missionary churches. At the recent dedication of the new Mis sion Chapel in Seoond street, 150 women, who had been addicted to the use of intoxicating drinks, marched into the chapel, hearing a banner proclaiming themselves members of the New York women's remperenoe society. The Chicago jail is haunted, and the pri Boners say it is the spirit of a murderer, Flem Ing. who was executed nearly ten years ago, Which visits them. Noises of cold, rushing winds, groans, rattling and clashing of bolts, and other pleasant sounds, vary the midnight dullness. The Diaspora of the Moravians, is the name for the Synod or governing body of the Moravian Church in America. I rue to its ancient history, this church is sending out members, under tbe authority of tbe Diaspora, to new and destitute places, to preach and rather congregations. They are to visit places where Moravian families are settled. These missionaries have no salary, their travelling expenses only being paid. A negro in Anson county, N. C, voted the Conservative ticket. The pale faces thereabout were so delighted with the gentle man's patronage that they gave him forty acres of land. Forty acres for a vote indicates either a wonderful scarcity of Conservative votes or niobt wretchedly poor land. Proba bly the latter sliced from the tract where the more a man owned the nearer he was to star vation. Louisville papers give columns to reoord the arrival, the appearance, the haunts, the companions, tho past victories, the present intentions, the future prospeots, etc., of Mi chael McCoole, the gentleman who proposes to punch the head of James Coburn for $j000. What will le done with the new one, and Mr. Porter, time alone will tell." Dr. Rice, when at the head of the Theolo gical Seminary In Prince Edwards, Va., was requested by the people of one of the out parishes to send them a minister. They wanted one who could visit a good deal, for their former minister neglected that, and they wanted to bring that up. They wanted a man of very gentlemanly deportment, for some thonght a great deal f that. And so they went on describing a perfeet minister. The last thing they mentioned was they gave their last minister $350; but if the Doctor would send them such a man as they had de scribed, they would raise another $50, making it $400. Dr. Rice immediately replied, ad vising them to send for Dr. Dwight in heaven, as he did not know any one on earth that would suit them.
