THE DAtLl KVENIN G TELEGRAFH PHILADELPHIA, . TUESDAY, DECEMBER 17, 18G7. PEAMATIO. Mad'lle Ftany Jkataichtk'i Debut In "Hidii," at the Chitant Street Theatre. Last winter Bogumll Dawlson, German tragedian, appeared la our city la the legiti mate German drama. Ill" adveut wae her alded b7 a great flourish or trumpets, and the jmblhi were led to expect omethlng wonderful. Bat tbe publlo were doomed to disappoint eat. Dawlson w.i ood actor, but he was far turn being equal to the fame which had preceded Mm. Tor tbl reason, when Mad lie Vur Janausehek wn announced to appear In oar midst, and it was claimed for her tha1 hi excelled In dramatic ability every other tr wr di"nne nP" tUe HtKe-tne announcement was received with poino distrust on the part of lb fullo. By this theory alone are we able to account for a single vacant seat at th Ortfsnut Street Theatro, on the occasion f tier first appearance before a Philadelphia andlence lost evening. The publlo had been fully apprised of her merits, for from her first appearance In New York she has attracted overwhelming bouses, holding them spell bound by the startling energy or her persona lions. Btae was greeted last evening by a large and appreciative audience, and the effect pro dnced was but a repetition of her triumphs on the New York stage. From the beginning to tbe end of tbe pluy the enthusiasm was un bounded, the audience maintaining usually the most decorous silence during the performance, bnt at the fall of the curtain at the close of each act glvlug vent to their great satisfaction by unbounded applause, which imperatively de manded the reappearance of the heroine ol the evening. And we bave no hesitation In saying that Mad'lle Janauscbek fairly merited this decided ovation. The drama placed on the stage was the Medea f Grlllparzflr, In which the old story of tbe Golden Fleece has been wrought out In a man ner which differs materially from the English version, as well as from the Italian, with which we have of late been made familiar by the aetlng of IUstorl. The most notable divergence from the other renderings Is la the absence of Orpheus," the protector of "Medea" from un propttlouB fate. If anything, this omission Is an Improvement, for It gives more decision and greater strength to the prominent role of the play, and demands an Increased versatility In the personator of that role. Helpless, forsaken by "Jason," pursued with unrelenting hate by gods and men alike, tbe character of "Medea" Is deprived of much of Its usual barbarity, Is made more human and less ferocious; and tbe strong love of country and earnest Uevollon to the welfare ot her children which pervade It appeal Irresistibly to the sympathies of every auditor. MUle Janauscbek's conception of this difficult and Imposing character Is wonderfully faithful. She does not storm and rave, but, de spite the harshness of her fate, is still human, and womanly withal. Her personal appearance adds much to her rendition of the role. Of large, bat fair and graceful person; with a prepossessing countenance, over whlob. she exercises un bounded oonlrol; and with eyes that express all the varied emotions and passions of her oul, she stands before her audience a life-like Impersonation of the crude gentleness of the harsh age which the drama affects to represent Among the most noticeable points In the repre entation t "Medea" Is the interview, in the second act whl:h she holds with "Creusa," tbe gentle daughter of the King of Corinth, When the latter attempts to Instruct her In the art of playing upon the harp, that she may be able to bring tbe charms ot muslo to bear upou tbe callous heart ot "Jason." The powerful workings of her heart, when her children are brought before her in tbe third act, and she is given the privilege of havlug one of them lor a companion la her banishment, if either will noose to follow her, are strikingly shown as be alters the pitiful lamentation: "Die Kinder, melne Kinder! .la die Rind's' Pas Elnr.'go. whs mlr blelbt ant dlener Erde. Verlockst JJu ruelue Kinder ? Lass tie los." And again, in the same act. she gives the king tbe He with an emphasis that might well startle that potent personage, In the words: 'Das luegst Du, falscher, lingered) ter Koeulg." But we must forbear to follow "Medea" through the whole of her sorrowful story, as we should like. Suffice It to say that M'lle Jananschek's wonderful personation of this character Is one of the most Impassioned, aud at the same time one of the most natural, that bas been seen upon tbe stage since the days of Mrs. Siddons and Rachel. Tbe support given t the central cbaraoter last evening was admirable, especially that of tbe two leading auxiliaries, M'lle Singer as Gorea" and Mr. Scherenberg as "Jason." Tho latter displayed dramatic power ot a high order and rare cultivation. About 12 o'clock M'lle Janausehek wag the recipient of a fine indoor serenade at the Con tinental Hotel. The "Juntce Mtennerchor," by whom it was tendered, assembled la one of a lone suite or rooms, Into whlob the great tragedienne was ushered. After she was seated, the "Mmnnerchor" rendered Beschnltl's Ossla In excellent style. Dr. Kellner then stepped forward, and in the name of the "Junge Mrcn. aerchor," as tbe representatives of the hundred thousand Germans of the State or Tonusyl. Taala, tendered her a cordial welcome to 1'hlla. delpbla. M'lle Janausehek responded by ex pressing her heartfelt thanks for this welcome, and the pleasure which she experienced lu being able to contribute something towards In troducing into this country the art of the Fa therland. Tbe chorus subsequently gave Fischer's Hoesletn im Wald and Kuecken's Wo Freude ihre Kraeiize JlueclU, after which the company dispersed. This evening Mad'lle Janausehek will again appear, In tbe celebrated and always popular character of "Adrlenue Lecouvreur." Her engagement, we regret to say, is limited to the present week, as tbe grand spectacular ballet ef Gmdriilon Is to be produced mil week at the Cuesnui (Street Theatre, with a large and e 111 cltnt troupe or dan sen sen, MUSICAL. ttm. GraaK and Iirtguoll In "II Trova tr," at tin Auad.iuy of Jllislc. It Is not often that even the Italian opera drawi together as largo and brllllaut an au dlenoe as was present at the Academy or Muslo last evening, on tbeoocnsion of the reprasenta Uon or Verdi's U Trovatore by the La Oraaijo and Brlguoll troupe. Every st-at was oecuplod, and there were many holders of unpopular Standing tickets. Max Struliosah's oompuny mbraees several artists whose fame l world wide, and who are as popular la Philadelphia a elsewhere, while two new faoes those of Blgnor Raodolfl and Mine Isabella McCulloch are presented to us. Tbe latter makes her llmt appearance la Philadelphia, this evening, in Jitrnta. The former appeared last evoultw as tae"OountdlLnnH," la II Trooator lie makes agcod appearance upon tbe stage, and displays a fine Hen baritone voice, whlcU Is. however, rather weak, and, la consequence, uusatlnfuo tery. Tbe famous "It VaU," while It sarved to how tbe excellent qualities of his voice, mudo qaally manifest lu present lak of volume It la unnecessary te dwell upon tbe merits or 11 ad am e La Grange and Miss Adelaide mil- lips, whose rare vocal merits are well known to rblladelpbiaos and duly appreciated by them, notwithstanding that years have elapsed ilace tbe former's last appearance In our midst. They sustained tbe role or "Leonora" and "Asucena" with perfect ease and equality, and Imparted to an opera which is a gem la Itself all tbe charms that can readily be thrown about It, Slgnor Brlgnoll, we regret to nay, was In his customary mood. lie has been entrusted with a tenor voice of wonderful purity end richness, perhaps the finest of the present day; but he la either too indolent to exert himself to the full extent of his powers, or lacks a knowledge of the courtesy which is due to tbe publlo from one of his merits and pretensions. It Is said that he was, on two occasions, hissed from an European Mane by audiences who were deter mined not to submit to bis easy-golna style, rerbops If tho audience last evening had administered a similar rebuke, when Hlguor lirtgnoll makes lils appearance on Thursday evening, as the rollicking "Don Giovanni," be would infuse into his manner a slight tincture of tbe gayety which alone can prevent his per sonation of the Don from being a decided bur lesque. Tbls evening Norma will be given, with La Grange, McCulloch, Massimlllanl, andSuslnl In the cast. OIL PAINTINGS, ETC. I L PAINTINGS. JAMES S.
