Verily, the world moves I bnt would It not be well lor those who are about to parobass Bswlng Machines to buy tbe genuine Orover Bakar Machines making the"Elaailo Btltcb." and executing the roost elabo rate embroidery, either with two threads, "three threads," or four tbrsads, without aay rewinding on tbe bobbin, instead of getting one with a complicated attachment, making a poor attempt at Imltatlo n. As Uils Is the season for Holiday presents, and as nothing -can be more appropriate or useful to wife, mother sinter, or friend, than a good Bswlng Machine, we advise those of the readers of Tun Tblsosafh who would get the best to examine the Orover A Bakar before purchasing elsewhere, being satisfied that It Is capable el a greater range ol work than any other Sewing Machine extant. In Tht livening Telegraph of some dnya Rgo. a mil re- rort was glvea of the arrest of a forger, Joseph l. Dawson byname. Yesterday afterao-jn lie had a full allowing tip at a hearing before Alderman Tolaud, and the fact of bis being aa old and lnconlrovertlbly cunning forger, was established. The first witness called was Mr. V. A. l'enrson, toller of the Central National Hack, ile stated that on or about the 17lti of October. Mr. K. A. Lynd, or this olty, came Into the bank with Ilawsuu, ami introduced hint to to the ofllcers, saying that be hud been recommended to do business with that Institu tion by several letters, purporting to bo from well Known and Influential citizens of Pitts burg. At the name time liawsou presented a dralt from l'lttsbura wblcb he wanted cashed, but this was not done for soma reason. Mr. Lynd and tbe alleged forger went out, and In about half an hour tbe latter relumed, ile till that, upon considering tbe matter of tbe draft with Mr. Lynd, that gentleman bad areed to take it himself, paying over a check for Vt'iU. This, Dawson presented for payment. Tbe teller scrutinized tbe check, and refused payment oa tbe giound Jtbat tbe signature was badly exe cutod, and looked very UUltt like Mr, Lynd's signature. Mr. Pearson, however, said that if Mr. Lynd would lndorne the back of the check with the statement that the signature was bonntlde, that he would cash it. Dawson left, and soon re turned with the check endorsed "O. K., li. W. Lynd," but this signature was even as bad as the other, and payment was for some time re fused; but Dawson in extenuation for the bad wrilinsr, said that Mr. Lynd and himself had been having a convivial glass together, and that tbe writer's band had become rather shaky. With this explanation, which was given in an earnest manner, the check was cashed. It Is almost needless to say that in due time Us spurious nature was discovered, as was the false explanation Riven by Dawson. Now the next witness called was oue Marls Taylor, a young man, and an accomplice of the cunning Dawson. He turned State's evidence on tbe principle of securing the larger bird by letting the smaller fly and said that he bad been sent to the Central National Bank to receive S37 on a check bearing on Its face the signature of E. W. Lynd, forged by Dawson; thut when be received the 8.17, with a wise fore thought of bis own pecuniary clrcumstanoes, be appropriated $30, and returned the rest to Dawson: that at another time Dawson wanted money, and be sent Taylor first to Maurloe A Co., on Chesnut street, and then to the Northern Liberties Bank, te procure soma blank checks, and when he bad got them, Daw son and one of bis associates went Into a saloon on Qlrard avenue, in which the forger was eventually arrested, and there they forged a check on the Northern Liberties Bank for 175, attaching to It the false signature of Messrs. Kills S Harrop, dry goods dealers on Market street; that they sent him (Taylur) to the Bank to get It enshed, when be was arrested. He further stated that Dawson used to have a room at the Continental, where be forged checks by tbe wholesale, and before the very eyes ol him who was being gradually Initiated Into the secrets and peculiarities of the great crime. Then there was another oomplainant, Mr. Hotbacher, who alleged that Dawson bad sneaked Into bis store, and bad stolen two valuable gold watches. Upon this testlaony Joseph B. Dawson was commuted in default of $5000 ball, In $4000 ball to answer for bis forge ries, and in $1000 ball te appear at Court and answer for bis robberies, lie is a man about twenty-five years of age, light complexion, and stoutly bnilt. Morris Taylor, the son of a well known and greatly respected larmer in Chester county, was committed to answer as a witness in another case linked with this in default of $2000 bail. Tub Citt Ice-Boat still reposes gracefully In her berth, and we understand that tbe Trustees bave not even engaged the services of an en gineer as yet. Meanwhile the storm and oold are playing the very mischief on the Delaware, which already contains a large amount of float ing ice, and If matters keep on undisturbed as at present navigation will be completely inter rupted by Monday. If the Trustees bad the slightest regard for their duties and tbe com mercial Interests of the city, they would have their machine, ungainly and comparatively worthless as It is. in motion, and tbe closing of tbe river might be delayed. If not altogether prevented. But the City Ice Boat la a farce, as everybody knows, and the Trustees are accus tomed to add to the ludicrous and vexatious character of tbe all'alr by waiting until the Horse-shoe Is locked up before gutting them Bi Ives and their boat under way. They will bave to wait but a few days longer, and then we shall anticipate an invitation from tbetn to go five miles down the river on their floating tub. and there remain. Ice-bound, for a week or more. The world moves, but the Ice-Boat and all Its belongings generally continue to keep at a respectable distance behind. Thbeatkniito Dibb Calamities When Mr. Philip Thomas Is alleged to have oommeneed to misuse his wile and children, a man named Connell, brother to Mrs. TUomas, took her and the children to his borne, on Fourth street, below Library. It is also alleged that Thomas was In the habit ol coming to this place, and while there of beating bis wife, not forgetting a cuir now and then at the children; that he was arrested, and let out on bail to keep tbe peace. But, notwiihstandlng all this, it is furthermore averred that be oarnj. to the house yesterday and drawing out auexlrernely dangerous knlfo meditated the instant destruction of the gene rous Mr. Connell, when be (Thomas) was ar rested. Keoorder Kueu held him lu $1500 bail to answe. "Bblbhazzab'b Lesson." A sermon on this subject to young men Is announced for to morrow evening, by l'rofessor It. ii.
