'TEH DAHA EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 1867. 6 0 a Chinas KimI1I. TTi TWice Lrtter, an American pnper, which la lunt been started ittPhanghHe, thus describes remarkable HtrTnrt examination which la held In the Celestial Empire: The examination of candidates for Kyn-bnn, or the decree ot A. M.. In the province o Klans; mi, wh held at Mankln, at the Koon Yuen. In the Chinese 8th moor, from the 8th to the 16th day. The number In attendance was aljteen thousand, and the Manainatlotis were conducted with closed doors r 1,prry!V: iellor named Lieu, awistcd by a chnl'?1? Same d Won, both of whom were Bent down from Pckin. Tbe names and number of the anccfMful candidates have not transpired at thU date. The number, however. It I said, will t exceed 100. Tbe moat remarkable clrcum t tanccs connected with the examination are the There waa an old man ajred 103 years, accom- anWbybisson.njred 80. hi grandson of 60, andthe (treat grandson of 20 years-the two former of whom, according to Chinese prece dent will attain at least to an honorary decree. The second most remarkable fact was the larsje umber of deaths that occurred In the stalls, amounting to'seventy. As the doors were closed and seated, their bodies were passed over the wall, and coflins and other expenses of burial nrov'ided by the mandarins. It is worthy of Bote, a showing the atatvt of the Government Anglo-Chinese school at Bhanshae, nnder the cbaree of the Rev. Younsr J. Allen, of the Ame rican MethodljtMlsBloD, that six out of the ten in the first claps of that school also went up as candidates for the degree of A. M. Horrible Sport. ' M. Jules Richard, writing to the Paris Figaro, ascribes the death of Mr. Julian Watts-Russell, of Ham Hall, (Staffordshire, who fell as a volun teer in the Pope's army at the battle of Montana, to another Englishman, who was fighting on the Garibaldlan side. The writer says: "Amonpst the originalities of this laJ cam paign, 1 have learned one which deserves to be embalmed in hiBtory. An Englishman follows the Garibaldlan forces. He ta armed with a riflo of excessively long range, and made expressly for long shots; lo this weapon is fitted a small telescope, and a reflecting mirror permits our Englishman to sweep the country to a distance of one thousand eight hundred yards.' Comfortably installed on a height, out of retch of the enemy's shot, he picks off his men in an artistic manner, just as a sportsman shoots down larks. This sanguinary eccentric keeps a sporting book, in which be Jots down the exact circumstances ot every homicide he commits. He has no political opinions; he is a simple slayer of men; but, as no regular army would permit Buch 'sporting,' he attches imfelf to tbe Irregular Garibaldlan bands, rom tbe position he occupied at Montana, kere is every reason to believe that it was he that killed young Julian (Watts) Russell, ot whom I spoke in my last letter."' i i WraTOir. Dan Rice is out in a card, in a Cleveland paper, in which he says: "As an evidence that I deem him (Weston) both honest and able to do even better than the conditions of his match required, I will wager $60,000, f 10,000 to go to Weston if he wins, and the balance to be donated by the .winner to any public charity, that ha can walk one hundred miles in twenty-three oonseoutive eura."
