A pond In the neighborhood had a thin coaling ot Ice, and a number of young men and Dojs ventured on it for the purpose of skating and sliding. While thus engaged, the Ice gave way, and William Arthur, aged thir teen, Robert Arthur, aged flfteeu, and William Peeler, aged sixteen, were thrown Into the water at a point where the depth was suiliclent to drown them. Every effort was made to save the lad g, but without avail. The bodies were recovered in about an hour. The two Arthurs (brothers) being known, were at once removed to the residence of the father, Mr. Samuel Arthur, No. 1932 Camac street. Peeler. was not recognized for several bourn, and In the mean while was kept at the Station House, Tenth and Thompson. After the recognition the body was removed to the residence' of his parents, No. 856 North Sixth street. The occurrence occa sioned considerable excitement in the neighbor hood, and rumors were prevalent ot a greater loss of life than that given above, but a tho rough search failed to bring to light any other bodies, and those who witnessed the accident assert that all of those who fell in were re covered, and were included in the three whose names were given. The impending nomination of General Grant by the people 01 the country has roused tbe opposition to the importance of niacins a mill tarv candidate in the field "a man Identified with the war." Accordingly a consultation was recently held at Washington, and General Win field 8. Hancock agreed upon as the suituole man. General Sherman Is not available. There is some doubt in reaard to the selection for Vice' President, In the event of the nomination of Maor Hoffman, it Is suesrested to run Jotm D. Haskia for Governor ot New York, and Samuel J. Tilden for United Mates Senator. The Republicans of New Kugland generally declare in favor of General Grant for President and Henry Wilson for Vice-President. General Howard bus also been suggested for the second place on the ticket. In this State both Gover ' uors FeDton and Morgan are proposedjthe latter In this city, BDd the former by leadiug pRpers of Jhe country as the Troy Times, Albany k eening Journal, AiDany t press, Sjracuee Utaniard, Itochebter Express, Rochester Democrat, Elmira Advertiser, etc. Little New Jersey has also a man, Governor Marcus L. Ward. In this state is a perfect lcelon ; Secretary Stanton has been named In Philadelphia, Governors Curtln and Geary, Speaker Grow, Senator Cameron, and Judge Reid. It is probable that John Hickman will be chosen Speaker of the lower bouse ot Leulslatuie in January, and in that event he may also be found In the lists. He was supported for the nomination at the Chicago Convention in 1800, and received a strong vote. These are all prolects of politicians, and only worthy ot recorulpp as such. The people 111 soon determine the question for theuiielves. Adams, a backman, is the most popular man in Norfolk. He declined to let Ueueral liutler ride in his hack. ! The last descendant of Robesporra diel recently at Vienna in great poverty, lie was proud of big descent. . ; vTIIB DAILY : EVENING TELKGRAPII PHILADELPHIA; ' TUESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 18G7. v Another Small Power Armlsf, Little Switzerland Is following the example of little Bclmim. A commission of staff oflkert is hard at work on a scheme for Increasing the efficiency of the army, and another commission has been charged with tho duty of selecting the Sites of new fortifications to be erected on the frontier. It Is understood that the defenses of Basle and Oltcn will be materially strengthened; that te'et-du-pont-will- be built on the limmat, the Re uss, and the Saane; and that a large in trenched camp will be -formed at Heme. the execution of these plans involves a ruinous ex penditure of public money.
