We doubt if there has Wn anj man who Laa written on politloal scienoe in America who can compare with Dr. Wayland in point of the influence he exerted. Oar fellow towns man, Henry C. Carey, Kaq., has done much, but being later in the field, and adopting a style rather fitted for the scholar than the beginner, he has not reached that wide circle into which Dr. Wayland entered. In almoet all of the ichools of the learned where moral or political Bcieuce is taught, we find an abridgment of his woika. lie was a moit industrious writer, freely discussing, at great length and generally. With great clearness, the elementary principles of the science, and is well fitted by style and train of thought to supply a text book for the young. 15ing thus a household work, we do not doubt that the carefully prepared life pub lished by his song will meet with a most cor dial recpption. The Doctor was born in New York in 179G, and died at Saratoga in 1865, being, therefore, in his seventieth year. From his youth he had devoted himself to his favorite study, and there are few enterprises for the advancement of religion or education undertaken during the fifty years of the Doctor's active life that we do not find him associated with. In 1823 he publibhed the first of his disoourses it was an essay on the "Moral Dignity of Man," and from that time nntil a month of hit death it seems his pen was never idle. Daring forty years the Doctor published seventy-three works of various kinds, some of course being pamphlets. Ilia "Political Science" and his "Moral Science" have gone through numberless editions, and have served a valuable purpose in directing the attention of the student to a subject which requires all the smoothing of the pathway which is possible. At the allotted age of man he was gathered to his fathers, universally lamented and respected. His "Memoirs" are oopiously filled with diaries and correspondence, and muoh credit is due to his sons for the excellent literary style of the work. The Lovers' Dictionary. A Poetical Treasury of Lover' Thoughts, Fancies, Addresses, and Dilemmas, or a Dictionary of Compliments and a Guide to the Htudy of the Tender Hci nee. New York: Harper A Hros. fnlla de'phla Agents: J. B Llpplncott & Co: A big work, we suppose, has a right to a Jbig title, and as the present volume extends lover 789 pages, we must grant the compiler the privilege of the monstrously long descrip- ion on his title page. In promising to famish fin "complete work" on the subject we think the author went a great way, bnt it seems as hough he had fulfilled his pledge. If the 'Tender Science" (?) can be learned by rote, rr if lovers can get ont of their dilemmas by eforence to an index of ten thousand appro- date lines, then we commend the "Dio- ionary" to the afflicted. We do not pretend to know whether the formality of a few choice "compliments" will mollify a lady's anger r not, but as there are an enormous number if "soft sayings" collected, the rejected nn . can have his choice. To a class, however, the work will prove blessing. We refer to young gentlemen who ilesire appropriate original poetry. By invest- Dg in the "Dictionary," they can secure an jibundant supply, and the size of the book events a detection of the plagairism by search ne the work. To them it will be invaluable. SJut to people, as a whole, we do not think hat the "Dictionary" will prove a very ac ceptable work of reference. As a rule, after i oertain age, lovers' quotations appear rather rite. It too frequently happens that romance tleparts: And marriage, or death, or division Wake barren our lives." po we would advise the publishers to keep the J-ork stereotyped, for each generation will Uant a codt when it falls in love; but no lustom will flow from the people after a cer tain age is past. The work has the appro priate device on the back of two doves and an olive branch, and is prefaced by two engra vings evidently taken from "London Society." ET-EMRNTS OF PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY. By John l Hrocklesby. A. M. K. H. Butler & Co., Phlla The author is right in prefacing his work 1th the assurance that it is "unnecessary to Indicate the right of Physical Geography toa permanent place among the studies of our schools, academies, and' high institutions of earning." The unanimous testimony of those best qualified to judge, and the value of the sdence itself, demand for it a high place in the curriculum of every school. We hail with pleasure the work now before us. It is an ad mirable text-book, combining in a singalar Lainiony the advantages of an essay and of an atlas. It is filled with illustrations-which im press its principles on the mind of the student, and is in every respect worthy of the high standard accorded toall "Mitchell's Series." Messrs. Butler & Co. have handsomely pub lished it in a form for daily use, and the uthor, by following the idea of the globe being m organized body, makes a clear and an inte- jfeBting work. It will be generally aijopted by Wr schools. li'or-R Ykars in rpantsit America. Bv F. llBkNHurek. Hurd &. JloiiRbton, New York. Philadelphia Ageul: fc). W. Pitcher, No. 8 8 CbtHuut btreet. There is, indeed, but little known of Spanish America, and what little is known does not repress ns favorably. Mr. Hassaurek had crar years to see if he could discover anv eood. inl after diligent search we .do not think he lolls ns In his narrative that he succeeded jllia warm personal friendship for a number of he citizens of boutn America prevents him Renouncing all the people, but as a class he loes not call on ns to gram their education His work is of deep interest, because of the uoveltv of the subiect. We all talk of that I THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPHPHILADELPHIA, MONDAY, portion of i.'ie world, but none of ns have anything but a vague idea of veils for the women and cloaks for the men. Mr. Has sau re k brings us into direct contact with the people and their institutions, and teaches us that which we, but for hi nl, would not know. The woik is well worthy of a careful perusal. Tun Phantom of tub Forest. By Emerson Bennett. Philadelphia: John 14. Potter & Co. Mr. Bennett has secured a position second to no living author as a portrayer of Western life and character. Tor years his works have been familiar to the novel-reading publio, and both the originality of their plots and the graphia Btyle iu which they are told entitle them to the high place universally awarded them. The latest of Mr. Bonuett'a stories is before us. It is entitled the 'Thantom of the Forest," and depicts pioneer life in Kentucky when that territory well merited the name of the "dark and bloody ground." It fully sustains the author's high roputation. It combines all the wild adventures of the huntsman's life with just sufficient of the romance of the love-tale to make it possess the merits "of each. It is handsomely pub lished by John U. Totter & Co., who, we are glad to understand, are about to issue a uni form edition of all of Mr. Bennett's works. The "Phantom of the Forest" will have a deservedly large sale. Tom Miller; on, Ai-tsr Many Days. By Mrs. Bock. well. J. U. Uturlguea & (Jo., Philadel phia. This is one of the best boys' works we have ever seen. It is a tale of the prairie, emi nently calculated to interest our boys, and while drawing their attention to wild life and adventures, also teaches them the im portant lesson that there is no love like a mother's love. It ia a thoroughly Christian story, and merits general reading. We have received from-James S. Claxton three little works, bound uniformly, entitled "Oliver's Decision," "Margaret and Her Friends," hnd "Diok Frazer."' They are all admirably told tales for the young, and full of life and interest. Without obtruding it, they convey a good moral, and will be both useful and acceptable. Mr. Claxton also publishes two other similar works, entitled "Arthur Morland" and "Mother's Shawl," which we heartily com mend. As a publishing house of children's works, Mr. Claxton's holds one of the highest position, and we feel assured that whatever bears his imprint is worth reading. In a recent notice of that excellent little work of Professor Hart's, "Mistakes of Edu cated Men," we inadvertently stated that it was published by J. P. Skelly, while in fact it is one of the valuable publications of J. C. Garrigues & Co., No. 138 South Fourth street. The "Lady's Album" for 1808 Is the title of a cheaply issued little work, with a number of advertisements at the end, which is pub lished by Coolidge, of Boston. It conta ns some well-selected verses. LEGAL NOTICES. TN THK DISTRICT COURT OP 1 HE UNITED STATES FUll THE EASTERN DISTRICT OF FFKNbYLVANlA.
