8 MUSICAL. 1 We to record thsf' CoNCrtRT.- vm filled to rclMtor - UiatOoneort Hall . at evening, on the oco- ftlOB of the fcrtiOi Complimentary Conoert tcn eredtoilrrA jophlne Sonlmpf by the follow ing emlne -A fcrtutK-Mlt Louise Solllday. the FP soprano of St. Btepben's Choir, nod a Theodore Habelman, Aaron K. Tay or. " . Oaertner, end Henry O. taJ U A in the capacity of conductor and plnnlak A at the ll.t will .how that the friend, of Jar.. Hchlmpf.wbo deelMtd to give her a eub StS evTdeno. of their esteem, did not deem Mnecewary to go abroad for some name high In the musical world as a crowning attraction rt the reason that home talent alone was de Muled upon In making up the programme, we vrcre donbly gratlOed at the large and appre ciative aodlenee which wai present. Indeed, not another person eould have obtained a seat In the room, and a large nnmbcr were obliged tc tarn away from the door. The bentfleiaire of the evening was la excel lent voice, and lang With auch expression and force that she was heartily tnoored every time the left the stage. 8he first appeared In the avalloa from Meyerbeer's Robert, commenc ing Robert, tol (jut j'aime "Robert, Idol of my heart." She subsequently sang with Mr. Tay lor the duo from Mozart's Don Giovanni, Lad torro "Nay, bid me not;" with Messrs. Ha feelmann and Taylor, the trio from Donizetti's LucrtUa, Guai te ti $uggl "Guard thee from all -emotion;" and as a finale to the concert the grand quartette from Verdi's Rigoletto, with Miss Bolllday and Messrs. Ilabelmann and Taylor. Miss Bolllday sang very acceptably several solos, Including A rd ill's L'Estast&ae, Maschek's charming ballad, "Say, was It heart felt?" and the popular "Five o'clock In the morning." But In the lost she failed to Impart that arch expression to which we have become accustomed since Madame I'arepa-Xtosa first aangln our midst. Mr, Taylor was not In as good voloe as usual, 'but he was heartily applauded In Keller's "Exile," Kucken's "Good Night. Farewell, My Own True Love," and the Jolly "Porter Bong." fromFlotow's opera of Martha, But the chief vocal attractions of the evening, as was to have been expected, were the solos by Mr.Habelmann Who never appeared to better advantage, and was rapturously applauded. He gave a new ballad by Abt, entitled "The Three Wanderers," the delicious tenor solo Irom Kreulzer's Night in Granada, and "In Terra Solo." Mr. Carl Gaertner's Instrumentation was most excellent. He rendered De Berlot's violin -concerto, op. 4-1; aud one ef his own composi tion 'entitled "Dreams of Scotland" a more fitting name for which would be "The Reality ofBeetland." In company with Mr. Thunder lie gave Benedict's conoertante on Norma Mr. Thunder's share In the concert as - 'pianist was all that could have been desired. A more eDjoyable musical entertainment "throughout has seldom been offered to our citizens. - FINANCE AND COMMERCE. Ori-JC Or TRi EVKNINO Tblqbaph, Wednesday. Dec. 4. ltt7. The principal subject of discussion on the street to-day is the President's Message and the JReport of the Secretary of the Treasury on the - aaI(Iati rf (Via Ft na n ft net onrl f )ia nrAhohllit.w ef resumption, although we are at a loss to 6ce now that end can be immediately accomplished. The plan Of Mr. Walker, of borrowing $250,000,000 In gold from Europe, might render this result feasible, if we could but borrow the gold. But the President's plan does not embrace the idea of a foreign loan, but considers the object can be secured without resort to a foreign market. The . Secretary also assents to the views of the Presi dent, bnt his arguments have most of them been anticipated. It is the old story of the desirabJe Bcss of resumption a matter on which there can be but one opinion if the result could be attained without -producing a general crash. - The condition of tho debt, Mr. McCulloch tells , has Improved. 'The present year shows a ecTaf-eof $69,806,655;butfrom both the Message and the Report it is clear that the authorities do not ejpect the present receipts from taxation to Continue. Thus we are told that the excess on the present jear, ending June, 1H68, will amount to $143,904,880; lor the next year will be but $23,892,702; while the third year will have but $9,000,000 in favor of the Government. It is probable that the anticipated decrease will occur, and in view of the decrease, we thiuk the Imperative demand for a reformation of our system of taxation essential to safety. Tbe Secretary is very earnest in favor of fund in? the interest-bearing notes, and lays down as a cardinal principle that it is essential to pros- Jerity that we land or pay the balance of the nteresUbearing notes, and continue the con traction oi the currency. Tbe views of the Se cretary are generally discussed, but it seems that opinion is still widely divided. One party maintains with real that expansion it necewary to continued security, while tbe other, with equal fervor, calls lor contraction. "When doctors disagree." Tbere seems to be a very prevalent and very . proper feeling on tbe part of the House against hasty action on the subject of the finances, and a general desire not to rashly commit itself to nay particular expression of opinion. The nsual course of all resolutions should be a re ference to the appropriate committees, and it is against sound policy to second the previous question without such an examination as a committee only can give. We are glad, there fore, that the two propositions offered In tho House upon the subject of finances were tent to the Ways and Menus Committee: one by Mr. .. Banks in favor ot paying the debt in gold a . notion in which we heartily concur was -denied immediate consideration, and referred. And the other of Mr. Brooks, aeainst further -contraction, met a like late. However proper the spirit of tbe motion may be, we consider . a mature examination into Its merits, by a well Ojuahtled committee, an essential prerequisite to its passage. - ;J?1,ere,?M '"y l'ttle disposition to operate in ' ''J,! morning, but prices were rather VMtil i?
