THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1867. CITY INTELLIGENCE. Om ADDITIONAL LOCAL ITKU4 9BK OCTfllDK PAOXfl. MkTIRO OF THK HlBTORICAfc SOCIETY OF Fk.VR- tlyahia. A itted meeting of tbe above So ciety was held last evenlnf, in their room In the Athena-urn Buildin, B'xth and A lelphl BtreeU, Vice-President Dr. is. II. Coates la the cbatr. John Jay Smith, Esq., upon boinst Introduced to the meeting, read a paper entitled 'Ati Evon Hie with the Peon." Tbe subject was snpijeoted by the lee.tnrer readiD in tbe London Times of the death of Oranville John Peon, the great grandson of tho founder ot this State. The only remaining relative now Is K?. Tbomas Perm, tt whom all the estates ol iue fRniily descend, his brother Orauvllle navinir died suddenly, leaving- no wilt. The estit'e Is now in the cre of tho Lord Chancrllar, Uev. Thomas Penn havliiK been declare i oy a corn mi sion ls-sucd out of chanc -iy inctpablo of managing it, be bavin? become of late jars insane. Some Idea of the immense va'ueof the family estate may bo gained from the lact that Stolco 1'nrk. one of the family country peat, was cold lately for J3O,U00, or about $l,7G0,0li0. The lecturer visited the lately deceased Grnn villc John Penn, at Htoke l'urk, In 1845, and was most IciDdly and uospitnbly received. The name of Admiral Penn U far more fami liar to the Kuelihh than that ot William Penn, and it sounds stianpr'1 to the ear of an American to hear tho former's name to often and lhe lutter's so seldom. Id rclerrlne to tbe visit to this country. In 1861, of Grinvillo John Prnn, the lecturer stated that Thomas Penn had niven the ground upon which the city of Enhton. h built. It being jirovidi.'d in the deed that a red rose should bo jilvcn tbe head of the family yearly, thus secu ring a small consideration. So ue time aeo the city government desired to put to other uses the public squares, but could not do so without the convent of the living rcprescniative of Penn, and accordingly application was mado to Gran villeJohu Peun in 1852, who granted the request. Tbe deceased was for long time Governor of the Island of Portland, duriua which tirue he there built a palace, and named it ''Penusylva nia t attle.'' lie also built a mansion called "Solitude," on the west bank of the Schuylkill, which still remains. Moke Park was tbe scene of the poet Gray's "Long Story," and tbe church and graveyard that inspired his celebrated: "Klegy" are in the immediate neighborhood. At the conclusion of the reading the thanks of the society were tendered to the lectuier, and a printed copy of the paper ordered to be placed among its archives. Adjourned. Anniversary of a Youno Mhn's CnitisTiAir Association. The anniveisary of the Young Jit n'B Christian Association of tbo Tenth Bap tist Church was held last evening at the church, Eighth street, above Green. The officers of tbe society are Charles Reed, President; Edwin F. Kennedy, Vice-Preident; Charles A. Ilale, Secretary; and Henry Webb, Treasurer. The annual report refers to the organization of young men's associations thirteen year ago, with every indication ol proi-perity. Time, however, dulled tbe prospects, and a general relaxation wa9 manifested, until In a year or two nearly all of them terminated then exist ence. In 1858 this society was established, and con tinued until 1801, when two-thirds ot its mem hers entered the army. It wa9 originally con templated to otablish. mis-ion sctnoU and prayer-meetings, and have a peneral system for the distribution of tract. One yeir ago the society reorganized with seventeen mem bars, but thus far no missions hive been established, but the simject has been agitated, and is under advibement. A prayer-meotiDg liaa been cstab-li-hcd on Bush Hill, and a number of colored persons have availed themselves of tho facility thus offered. Durinsr the year prayer meetings were held and visits in adit to the number ol 412, and 17 couvirts are noted ue the effects ot tbe work. Oi those visited by the member, ten have re ceived tbe consolutiou ot religion while on their dying Led. The amount received during the year wan $32'.,14, and the an ount expended, $322 14, tLns leavins but $7 In tbe treasury. The items for which money W;is expended consisted ot aiding the. des-titute, furnishing clothes tor them, und in several instnuces poor families were prevented from ejectment lroni their humble home9 by the society. Addresfcs were made by Kevs. ,T. Wa'kcr Jackson, P. S. Ilenson, James NeiU, and the piiBtor. all of whom enjoined young men to join or create similar societies and go forth to relieve the destitute. Obtaining Goods on Forged Orders. Yea tetday, an order for two pieces of silks, pur porting to come from the firm of Sucppard, Van Ilurliugrn & Co., was sent -by a lad ti tbe store of Messrs. Vruer, Iiscboer & Co., No. 233 Chesuut street. The goods were tent by a young man In the etore, and on his way up Chesuut street he was met by a nan wbo asked liim "if he was goiug to the store of Bheppard & Co.?" upon replying that ho was, tne other said, 'It is all rieUt, I am from there, and 1 will take the silk." The package was handed over, and the man started up the street with it. Soon alter it was dis covered that tue man was a swindler, and that lie had Fold the silk to Mr. John Louty, on Eighth street, above Chesuut, upon tbe leprescntaiion that he bad brought it from England and was anxious to sell it. As Mr. Louty had not enough money in the store to pay for the silk, aud had toseud to bask for the bilauce, the man did not set off before a knowledge of tbe swindle reached Mr. Louty, and whi n tbe individual returned lor the balance of the money, he was taken into custody. Last evening be had a bearing bciore Alderman Itcltler, and was bound over under the name ot William liarils. In answer to questions by the Alderman, he said he came from England in April last, and had been since tben iu New York. An additional charge was preferred against him that of obtaining handkerchiefs on forged order at tbe store of Mr. John HugearL on Chesnut street. He wu held to answer that also. Yesterday afternoon a Bub-commiaee was appointed from tbe Ceuiuiit t e on Highways to confer with the Solljitcr as to the mobt advisable method of proceeaiug in the o. utter ot the so-called brick-pile nuisance, in the vicinity of the old Pennsylvania Bank buildii'g, and complained of to Councils by owmr of property and TcslclenU on Dock, Wulnut, and Second streets. I On the cue haud, it it alleeed that the con tractor, wDO oiiiy uu auiuoruy to use Dock street lor HQ feet by 6 leet in width, is really usinir it to the extent of 300 leet In length by over 10 feet In width, for tne storane ot bricks and pcueral debris, aud that, the stately piles ut loth aangtrous and objection able. On tbe other hand, it is stated that the Corn KxrbHiitre Bull ling and the one to be used as lulled Btute Appraisers' Stores are such lui meiife structure at to require all tbe space used lor the old material, and that to interlere with the fcame would be to actually interfere with important public Improvement. The Rnrcrvisor of the Fifth Ward commenced unit laM week against the cont ractor, Mr. Charles R. Clos, and obtained Judgment against him. He is obliged to pay f 61)0 daily for using tbe street In the manner above described, and, as there is considerable contrariety of opinion a regards tbe respective rights of each party, it was thought best to refer the whole subject to the City bohcitor for examination.
