Tbe Btorj Discredited In England and In Havana. wH Lokdow, Not. 18. The Colonial Office ba no d?lM of tbc,Tor.ola disaster, and hence the story 1 discredited. Havana, Nov. 18. Noither the British Consul nor any other party here has received any porticulars of the alleged sinking of the lslaud of Tortela aid drowning of ten thousand in habitants. There are only ramora of serious disasters by the hurricane on the 29th of Octo ber, but uo definite facts, and the report is evi dently greatly exaggerated. Kb York, Nov. 18. We learn that a private letter from Tortola, written 1st Inst., ha been iccclved In this city, making brief reference to the huiricane which swept over the inland on the 29th ot October, but it makes no mention of any general loss of life. The writer statea, how. over, that the family of Sinclair Bryant, Itsl deat Magistrate) at Koad Town, as the settle ment harbor is ca'led, were drowned, and also that during the storm a fearful fire broke out, ichlcb. destrojed many houses. A Statue of Edward Everett Unveiled in Boston. Boston, Nov. 18. The statue ot ElwarJ Everett, by Story, was unveiled in the public garden this morning. Governor Audrew was to have delivered the oration, but his death induced the Committee to dispense with all pub lic services. Mnrii e Disasters. Boston, Nov. 18. The schooner Bonny Boat of Dennis, from Gloucester fur Philadelphia, put Into Newport on Saturday, with loss of forotop mast and mainsail. 3 he schooner Tolone, of E?g Harbor, from Wilmington, N. C, for Boston, is ashore in Holmes Hole, and will have to lighten to get off. From Worcester, Mass. W0BCB3TEB, Unf)., Nov. 18. SUepbar1, the wife murderer, was captured in Canterbury, Conn., this morning. He was observed coining out cf a barn, where he had slept, and was soon taken, without any resistance. The officers will reach this city with their prisoner this afternoon. Ship News. Fatheii Point, Nov. 18. The Nova Scotia passed heie to-day for Quebec. Thi Next Presidency. The several candidates for the nest Presi dency brought forward by the Republican press seem, siDce the late Northern elections, to be reduced pretty much to a single one, viz.: Grant. In conjunction with Grant, several gentlemen of the highest standing in the Re publican party have been named lortbe second office in ti e Rift of the people. Among thoss Dsn ed for that position, there is perhaps none more worthy, and who could stive greater satn faeuon, than lion. W. 1). Kelley, ot Phi I idol phi a. Indeed, in no safer hands could the des tinies ot the nation be placed, were he even to occupy the principal position. Jfew Era, Fort Smith, Arkansas. General Sickles and G.neral Scott Mas tered out of ttte Army. General Grant has issued a special order honorably muiieriiiff out ot the service Major Ot'neral Sickles and Brigadier-General Bcott. The order takes euct from the 1st of January. The following is a copy of the order: "By direction of the President, the services of the following-named officers being no longer Beedei, they are hereby honorably mustered out of the rerviee of the United Slates, to take effect January 1, 13G8. "Mttjor-General Daniel E. Sickles, TJ. S. Volun teers. "brigadier GeneralJIt. K. 8cott (Brevet Major General) U. S. Volunteer." Skkak TniEVEg Arrested. Three colored men were arrested this morning for robbing Einstein 4 Donaghy'a dry goods store, in BoutU treet, above Hixlh, of a lot ot flannel and a number of shawls. Alderman Moore ooiii milled them for trial. The death was recently announoed, in the par it h of St. Martin, Colchester, England, of Mrs. Ann Rumsey, widow, in her 104th year. It is an interesting cironmstanoe that she was the daughter of the celebrated circumnaviga tor, Captain Cook, who was massacred by the natives of Owbyhee, in the South Sea Islands, and that she was born only a few years after the accession of Qeorge III to the throne of England.
