TIIE DAILY EVEMNG TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1867. V, Pr LITERATURE. 11KVIKW OIT NKW HOOKH. TmonoT.F Tnit Icelander. I?y Baron Foriqti. , lork: Janips Miller Co. Philadelphia Agent: G. W. Pitcher, No. KS Uliesnut street. Thia work ia considered ly Fouquu as Lis chef d'oeuvrt, and it certainly ranks high among ita kind. It is written in that piquant Style for which the French are noted. It is full of improvable adventures. It is raoy in details, and savors of the mlraculorn. It Stands high among the standard foreign works Of fiction. It ia admirably suited to the taste of a certain cla?s of readers. It is indiffer ently translated, and, finally, it Is worthy of the attention of all those who enjoy that class of writings of which "Hans of Iceland" is the type, and of which society Thiodolf ia a mo3t noted and worthy leader. J'ocb OAKS. A Novel. Ity Kamha Thorpe. Carlelon. Philadelphia Agents : X. li. Peter son & lirothers. "Four Oaks" is the stereotyped novel of the day, with a few additional touches, with a change of name and a change of dress iu the characters, but the plot is the old, old story, and if we add a flavor of the improbable to the regular scheme of novelists, we havo a picture of the latest work by Kamba Thorpo. It is not a bally written work, it is in some parts a remarkably clever work, yet oa the whole our judgment holds good iu saying that it ia like a soldier iu the line; it may be longer as he may bo taller than his fellows, he has his distinct nauio as has it, yet to look at him from a general standpoint, he is uniformed the fame and looks the same as liis fellows. So does "Four Oaks" appear when compared W ith its contemporary novels. YOUNG AMFItlCA AiSKO AT) ; OR, TTTTC SnAMROOK AND Tiiisti.I'.. I'.v Oliver Optic. Boston: Tee A Bueiipurd. Philadelphia Agent: G. V. Pitcher. , Oliver Optio ia probably the most popular living writer for boys, lie treats of his sub ject in that quiet vein of familiarity which , .kes the young reader along with hira in all lti:arnitives, and makes him feel a personal ' interest in the story told. Iu that, after all, lies the great success of writers for children. It is to enter fully into the spirit of the adventures, and by so doing to take the reader along with you. The present work is one of a series, and treats, as its name indicates, of the sights seen aud adventures met with by the boys when in Ireland. Remarks on the Sonnets of Sitakesphurr: James Miller, New York. Philadelphia Agent, G. W. Pitcher, No. StiSGliesnm street. The Sonnets of Shakespeare have long been an enigma to' the scholar, and their object and meaning caused many additional folios to be added to the volumes of Shakespearian litera ture. The present work i3 very handsomely published, and contains a treatise which dis plays keen -powers of analysis, and a thorough familiarity of the author with the subject of hich he treats. To.it is apreuded the Son- .1 themselves, so that the reader can make the references at once. The diction ia i-, and when We say as Fatisfactory as any er on this vexed question, we give it all praise we can. i 7 . V, mow Spkiooiks. Py the Author of the "W'dow lie-dot t P:i)hts." (i. V. Curletou. Philadelphia Agents: T. P. Petert,on & J---tlters. All tlie broad satire and coarse fun which made thu "Widow redott Tapers" so popular are repeated in "Widow Spriggins." It ia a Work with a vast supply of humor, but of the boldest kind.- Not posFessing, in any respuet, the quiet wit of Hood or Jerrold, it yet excels in ita peculiar vein, and as a racy work merits commendation. Ita wil is of course compara tively inferior to that of the great authors of humorous works; but it is, as a relaxation, an enioTalVle work. It is lor sale bv T. li.
