CITYINTELLIGENOE. 1 1 OB ADDITIONAL LOCAL ITEU8 BEE OUTSIDE FAGKS. TDK HoKTICPITCRAL ESSAY LAST EVENING. The es?ay Inst evening was delivered in the Com mittee Room of the Society, in their new hill, and wax very well attended. The essayist, Mr. Joflnh iloopes, was not present, but hw re marks weie read by the Secretary. lie said many rare evergreens had been found too tender for this latitude. He had ex perimented with them all, and would speak of those whicb he had found hardy enough to bear our Philadelphia winters. He had tried m.iuy pines trom Mexico, Asia, and the Pacific coast, which had failed. lie had found quite hardy the white pine, which was a Dative of our own Ft ate. The Ubootan pine from Asia, which, though hardy, was liable to be destroyed by disease. The Swiss pine (pinus cembru) is com pact, very hardy, and very beautiful, but of slow growth. The Scotch pine, besides beins; hardy, U valuable lor its rapid growth on the poorest soil. The Northern yellow pine (pinus milis), which, a native of our own State, ueplf ctea by the cul tivator, the etsajlsi described as ono of the mofit beautiful ol any known kind. The Table Mountain pine (pinua pungeus), another native pine overlooked by cultivators. The Austrian pine, one of his "greatest tavorites." The pitch pine (pinua regida), a native, nearly as beautiful ai the Austrian, and as a d wart bush pine, the Jduqho pise irt m Switzerland. Lambert pine, Corsica n pine, the heavy wooded pine from Cniiiorma. Tho I'yrcnean pine had done well in some places, but he was not prepared to class tbem with the well-tested kinds. Of the spruces, he considered the Norway above all in value, but olten planted so exclu sively as to be monotonous. The white spruco was an especial lavorite wherever tested. The Urrtzien spiuce (of California) and the Oriental spruce had proved haidy with him, were very beautiful, but could hardly be thought, he con tirtrred, as generally "well tested." The Dou glass spruce was only hardy in sheltered plares. The Hemlock spruce he placed next to the Nor way in value to the cultivator. The fir tribe nru next to the spruce In value. The Ka'saui, pretty when younir only j the Earo penn fJver hr, beautiful even to full aire, but tonx times injured by frost when young. The following were pronounce 1 very beautiful, very hard.', but hard to be obtained:-Nordmunu's nlyer.fir, Mount Rnos silver fir (Picea cep'iao iw'ca), Noble nlver hr (from Oregon), the Great f liver hr (P. grandis), B'benan silver tit (P. pwh'a). Thu Asiatic silver Br (P. pindroie), Via capo br and Webb's fir he did not think always hard v. 'i be arbor vitas were well worthy ol consider a'ion. The American was tue best; tbeS.be r.an very hard;, bcaaUlul, but a t-low grower. Iixrvey's. Booth's Darl, and the Globe, were all valuable verities ol the American. The Chincss arbor vita was unworthy of notice, but the dwarf varieties, such aj Golden, Tom Thumb, etc., were valuable. Of the cedars our native rod cedar was tbo only one recommended, and of junipers, the (Swedish and Irish. Ihe loliowing evergreens were named as quite hardy, atd worthy of the attention of planters : Vupresstia, Law'sonmna, O. Nool hansis, padocarpua juponioo, taxus adpressa, iaxus baccata, Canadensis, tor reya tazifotia, (hujofSts dolabiata, and the re' inospora, Thb First Lecture. The first of a course of lectures before the Teachers' Institute or this city as delivered last evening Dv William Kouseviile Alger, of Boston, at Horticultural Hall-Bbiecf, "Ihe 8chool ot Life."
