THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1837. San FrmtliMluHll), Mr. Stephen Massett, now In Cfiliforalii whovi nom deplume is Colonel Jcrraoa Pipes of Pipes vlllo, writes to a Pan Francisco lourual a letter coiilrnt-tiiKt Han Francisco as it Is bow with, what it was twenty-two jcars since. Of this clt.v in R4! he ways: "San Francisco wits tben, In tlie month of Apiil, 1819, a city ot tent?, including about two wooden bouses the 1'nrkor Iknmeainl Sherman & KuckcTs stoic. It reminded nie very much of tlic battle-proui.il of Hosortli Field, only nore so. I had just nx Mexican dollar in my pocket when I landed, and beina very liunury I turned into a reMuurant on Pnrtntimutb Biiuure, nnd called for two eu'ir-, coilco, and broad, ami I think I turned livid with puin and horror when the mini denintide 1 cxncilv fix dol'iir lor my meal. Tne I'Jhzu at that time was the resort of evervboity. M'Mil'juiuery street was only utiout one hundred yurd-i Iohls hemmed in by mini b ills, and covered all over with tents "Lumber was 3U0,lHil) a fool, and very fey j:rople could atlord to (:iy it or build, ali liOiiiiW everbedy M'eiiied full of money. How any body .i-ted in those days seems to me a mys tery, lint eveiybidv was jolly, happy, and pro pcrou-1. Kverjthiiiff cost about Slut) apiece, .r8-viira lots could be bomm tor aoout $10. 1 bought a lot on ll'iicon Point for 43 "id, that sold bix mouths after Un $250,000, and everybody was supplied with the purchase. Everybody knew everybody. Von Mioo'ic hands wi'h any body and everybody every hour of tlp.i day. You asked a man what o'clock it was, and he snid, 'A f)0-vara lot,' or s jme made equally un iutellic'ible reply. Fues occurred every other day, and the whole city, coupiM'tnir. of mud, shuo, dipt, lots, and shanties, was burnt up. It was rebuilt immediau ly, and pcoplo rather seemed to like the fun. Men never despaired. They would loae every cent they had tn the world, and in two days be richer than Koths child. Auctioneers spruntr up like mushroom, and everybody sold everybody. How the 'red flags' fluttered in the breeze! Jones, Tyler, Kenditr, Wainwrifiht, Tom Poulterer, Backus; Bleccker, Van Dyke, and LSclden; Spear and the immortal J. O. Eldridce! where are ye all Rone to, and what are you going to do when you t'ot there ?" liuecr Similes. The Full Mail Oazttte colls attention to some odd idioms la the speech of tho common people of KuglauJ: "A countryman, giving evidence be ore a magistrate the other day, spoke of a t man iu a state of exhaustion as being 'us faint as beans,' a novel illustration, and one that sounds odd (boaus being generally rea-arded as a fortifying aliment), until we remember that the intensely sweet smell of their blossoms in said to have a bad effect on those who fall asleep under its influence. And this suggests the ques tion, what may be the origin of many ot tho similitudes we hear in common talk, and how did they possibly find the way to general accep tance? ' Many of them seem to have been con structed in defiance of rather than according to the homoeopathic rule of timilia simiibus. 'Fine as tivepeuce' we may suppose to date from a time wueu some now obsolete coin of that value was issued brand near from the mint; but it is not easy to imagine how ninepence should have ever become a type of rectitude, aDy more than 1 o'clock or a trivet. How mad is a hatter, or how grave is a mustard-pot, that they should be made bases of comparison ? Is a ioach more healthy than any other fish, that it is fclected as the standard of eouuduoss 1 "Considering that a tree, (as far as we knot) never makes any futile attempt atmoving at all, it suiely has a riebt to repent being compared with a lame man. Why 'as slow as a top,' which sometimes spins so fast one cannot see it 1 and what is the meaning of 'as fast as hops?' It it allude to the vine, ho sever rapidly it may crow, its speed cannot be quite than of an ex press train; if to jumping on one leg, we. all know that even iu a short distance raethe odds are rather in favor of two legs. It was good commendation to say, what is now out of fashion, that any one behaved 'like a man of wax,' ir that meant of hue growth; a trump, too, is intelligible, but who can conceive it Haltering to be likened to a brick ? As metaphorical com parisons eive an opportunity of showing some wit and humor, It is rather surprising that none of our punsters and riddle-makers should have taken up tho manufacture. It is a good opening for a young man in the funny line." Curious Facts la tbe Election Returns. On the vote for Governor, at the late election, in two counties there was a tie vote llardiu and Van Wirt. The remaining counties were equally divided, i'orty-tbiee lor Thurmau, and forty-thiee for Hayes. Judge Thurman carried the county of High land by four votes, and General Hayes carried Washington by the same number. Hayes car ried Knox county by three vo.es; Thurman, Wadisou by eighteen. . WHU these exceptions Judge Thurman car ried bis counties by majorities ranging from 152 in Stark, and 208 in soioto, the lowest, to 2605 in Franklin, and 2306 in Monroe, the highest majority he received in any two counties. General Hayes carried Paulding by 95 majo rity, and Gallia by 00, Ashtabula by 384, Lo rain by 2288, the lowest and 1 treest majorities. The twelve counties of the Western lieserve give Haes a majority of 10,9(il, rather les than the proportionate majority it u-e Ito give against General Jackson during his administration. Mr. W. W. Skeat is about to edit, for the Early English Text Society, an Alliterative Romance of Alexander, the existence of which was iirst pointed out by Sir F. Madden, in a note to Walton's "History of English Poetry,'' nnd which he believed was written by the poet William, who translated and shortened the French romance of "Guillaume de Palerne," edited by Sir F. Madden for the Roxburge Club, under the title of "William and the Werwolf." Mr. Skeat likewise inclines to this belief, saying that it would puzzle any one to get more Werwolf phrases into a page, lie will Eoon include this Alexander Romance in Lis edition of "William of Palerne" for the Extra Series of the society iu question.
