Wast,
Tern with emotions wild. The t ooling shades,
With drowsy influence, lull tUo soul to rest.
J'r.di nodding flower waves in slender arms,
And tends above the stream as if to view,
With harmless vanity, its mirrored charms,
Or bless the soil from which its beauties
grew.
The oft repose of natureVootlios the fears,
The slumberous Kougs of injects drown the
sighs,
TLe sparkling dewdrojis mock at frnitless tears,
And all serenely smile the cloudless skies.
The twitt'mip birds hop joyously about,
And take what God bestows for every need;
While laughing children ring the merry shout,
And sport with careless hearts upon the
mead.
TLtis lulled by scenes so tranquil and serene,
The spirit broods no more on earthly wrongs,
1'iit swells the hymns of praise through arches
green,
That join the symphonies of angel throngs.

The Nicholson Pavement. Notwithstand
ing the rain, ihe Nicholson pavement on North
JSroad street makes fair progress. It is now
finished and ready tor use as tar south as Jeffer
son street. In all the pouring rain yesterday
afternoon the men encaged upon the pavement
'were at work, and the movable furnaces eui-
ploved in beatiDg the gravel and melting the
pitch were sending up their clouds of smoke
ln the face of the descending torrents.
Drenched to the skin, the men yet worked on
right cueeruy. xne street is unpavea ana pre
pared lor the flooring as far as Master street.
while the timbers and blocks are lving along
the sidewalks south of Thompson street. The
water runs from tbe finished portion of the
pavement as from the surface of a polished
' table; no mud holes or gullies can be found.
The street affords as clean and clear a surface
lor travel as it aid in the most dry and favor
able weatner. as a nignway tor venicies it
cannot be surpassed. What will bo its condi
tion when the frosts of winter enter the pro und
and b''ein their upheaving process in the
spring, remains yet to be seen.

. his tent by some adroit thief. He was engaged
last Sunday the entire day and evening, and
retired witn another njimster shortly before
eleven o'clock. The watch was a present to Mr.
Mansbip, from a congregation of which he was
. pastor nineteen years ago, and the guard was
very highly valued as a memento of the deceased
wife of Mr. Manship. Several other tents were
entered and piltered, and, as lc was in the days
of old. so it appears to be now: "There was a
day when the sous 01 God came to present them-

Suspected Theft. Last evening a crowd
was collected at Sixth and Pine streets, owing
to the arrest ot a colored man who attempted to
dispose of a valuable gold watch and chain to a
Jeweller, whoe place ef business is on Sixth
street, above Pine. Tbe chain had been ap
pended to the watch by means of a ring, which
was bent in a manner indicating that force had
been used in tuktng it from the watch. The
' storekeeper suspecting that the watch and chain
bad been stolen, called in a policeman who was
passing, who took the alleged thief to the Fifth
Ward Station, where he gave the name ot John
11. Kelly, lie was locked up tor a hearing.

apart from its natural atiractions, there was an

every visitor desired to se. She was born iu
January, J.70U, and until lately assisted her
tiauebtcr, Mrs. Arthur. Her health was uni

retired at 9 P. M., and walked often to Graves

cluding 12'J generals and 8U64 officers) and

wounded was CCD officers and 15,508 men; of
those who remained on th field, 178 officers and
2753 men: ol those who died of their wounds, 64

"When Mrs. Siddons retired from the
stage, the public dramatio taste declined a
good deal. Blue Beard, and Timour the Tartar,
with real horses, were indispensable adjuncts
to Coriolanus and King Lear. "Nothing will
draw but liorses," Baid Henry JJavis. "iNatu-

A quartet of soldiers, who had lost limbs
in battle, recently gave a serenade, and sang,
' lis sweet to be remembered."
