Colouel McLean occupied the Cbalr, aDd Dr.
Burlcnell acten an Secret nry of the wceiincr.
After a nuriiber of Inspiring; airs from the
hand, the meeting was called to order about
halt-past 8 P. M., by the introduction ot the
Hon. II. D. Moore.
This gentleman, in Mb opening remarks, said
that the platform of the Republican party was
a sound one. Ho regretted to say that there
ere still Kebels remaining in the country, and
that it was the duty of every good man to deleut
them at tbe ballot-box.
He alluded in terras of the strongest condem
nation to the President's policy in removlug Mr.
ytHiuon, whom be characterized aa the only
real patilot In tho Cabinet. He averted that
the Democracy were in unlpon with the Rebel
who tried to overthrow the Uovernraent on the
hattle-fleld. lie read the late letter of Robert
ToomOs in favor ot the "lost came." In con
clusion, he expressed the warmest sympathy
with the objects of the mectine. and adjured
every true man to throw his vote lu favor of the
Republican party.
At the close or his speech he was loudly ap
plauded. Tbe band then played a number of patriotic
airs.
Colonel Will. am B. Thomas was thn Intro
duced. ne slated that it wat impossible to wor
ship the Government and Mammon. He alluded
to the difference betweeu the Republican party
vi io-uay ana me same party or days gone by. I
lie saici tuat the Republic was founded on prin
ciples deduced by legitimate reasoning, and that
consequently it must live. He exported his
hearers not to falter in the prosecution of their
duty, and encouraaed them by saying that if
they acted their parts well they could not fail.
He charged tbe Democratic party of the North
with tho crime of brinaiug on the war, and
then failing in their promise to the South. He
faid that he was born a Democrat, and only
turned when ho discovered that the party to
which he then belonged was built upon slavery.
He would have every dihu thiak for himself,
and not be led oy others. He characterized the
President as a traitor, and called htm a bad
niaaanda hypocrite. He would not degrade
the Presidential chair by calling Andrew John
eon President. He called to mind the disgubt
ingly drunken state of His Accidency at the in
auguration, and contrasted nira with President
Lincoln. He averted that Andrew Johnson
should be Impeached. He said the North had
no sympatay with the President. He averred
that the extra session of Congress was due to
tbe lailure to impeach him; and arraigned Con
gress for tbe failure.
The Hon. William P. Kelley was then intro
duced. He began by stating his individual
belief that Andrew Johnson ought to be Im
peached, and said he had openly aunouueed his
opinion. He alluded to his famed addreas in
Concert Hall.
At this point the Judge's remarks were dis
continued for a few minutes, in consequence of
the entrance of the Republicans ot the Tenth
Ward, preceded by a baud.
The Judge resumed, and referred in terms of
praise to Ashley, Boutwell, and Williams. He
said his record on impeachment was a bold one.
He expressed his surprise at the lanre au
dience betore him, and said he was inspired and
gratified by it. He Bald that Mr. Stanton was
not removed, but only suspended. He would
nominate General Howard for the Presidency.
He condemned the course of General Steedman.
He believed Andrew Johnson to be a mauiac.
He charged his hearers to place good men in
nomination, and then "Go it bund." He warned
them that everything depended on the next
election.
He alluded to his trip to the South, and gave
accounts of his rather warm reception at Mo
bile. Had it not been for Andrew Johnson the
Houth would already have been reconstructed.
He stated that the South wants capital. The
true men of the South to-day are those who
foneht us the most bravelv on the battle-held.
He said that he saw in Ireland during the
existence of the eviction laws no such abject
poveity as he saw in Alabama. He laid the
poverty ot the South to the door of "cotton."
He spoke of the fertility of the Southern soil
and the salubrity of the climate, and urced the
Northern laborer to emurrate there. He im
plored his hearer.", by their iute?ests, their fami
lies, and their country, that so long as Andrew
Johnson remained in power, they should en
deavor to swell the ranks of the Republican
party.
