THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY, AUGUST 1, 18G7.
Tb Annual IllKrlmr to Mecca.
The return of the pilgrims to Mocca from
Buez was effected towards the close of Juue.
170m April 27 to June G the ships of the
J'pyptiau Company brought to Suez 0877 pil
grmia; 8i() reached tLe city via the land route,
v?fL Krand caravan from Tapiz, numbering
rfolKJ Bonis, was expected. Despite the crowded
condition of the vessels, and the exhaustion
Of the pilgrims, few deaths occurred. Sun
Strokes, dysentery, and the fatigues of the
journey made some victi nis among the over
laud pilgrims, but' taking into consideration
the eUeut Of the journey, and the utter desti
tution of the peripatetic fatalists who cross
the desert unprovided with tents or shelter of
any kind, and almost without bread or water,
tht mortality was trilling. On their arrival
at Suez, the pilgrims who came by sea were
quarantined for five days within a few miles of
the city. Although measures Lad been taken
to provide for their sustenance, the crowd was
60 large, and the facilities for transportation
between the city and the quarantine so limited,
that the pilgrims were without water for forty
eight hours. Tents had been sent them to
shelter the unfortunates from the burning sun,
but ere they reached the quarantine many bad
been overcome by the heat. During the
sojourn of the visitors at quarantine, there
occurred ten deaths. C'lf the loss of life
incurred by the caravans no exact estimate
could be obtained.
Currency and the National Itauks.
The following b-t embraces Home of the sus
pensions and failures of National Banks since
January. 18o7:
March 2. The National Bank of Newton,
Mass., tailed with liabilities amounting to
fllO.OOO.
March 2. The National Bank of Hudson, N.
Y., discovered un embezzlement by the cashier
to the amount ot $50,000. The concern revived
after several weeks' suspension, and resumed
business.
March 4. First National Brink of Medina, Mo.,
failed witti liabilities ot $82,000.
March 4. The Mechanics' National Bank of
Baltimore broke down trom the effects of a
series of defalcations, carried on tor a long time
by two officers of the institution.
July 25. The Weedsport tCayucra county)
National Bank closed doors, its liabilities being
$125,000.
Julv 2C The National Bank or Una-Villa. Ot
sego countv. failed, its liabilities buiua $200 000.
July 27. The I'equomiuck National Hank of
Bridgeport. Connecticut, suspended business,
and oilered a reward of $500 for the fugitive
cashier, W. Hamilton Barn urn, who absconded
With $50,000.
In the above brief statement the reasons for
the difficulties ot the National Bnnks tn question
are too lamentably obvious to need further
comment. JV. Y. World.
The London Post Office. Several changes
are contemplated at the post office in London.
Many of the superior clerks in the departments
Lave had offered to them the option of retire
ment, with an additional ten years of service
by way of superannuation. It is said that more
economical arrangements could then be made,
though, of course, for some years, while the
annuitants live, the cost to the country would
be greater.
