THE DAILY EVENINGTELEGRAPn PHILADELPHIA, MONDAY, JULY 8, 18GT. THE FASHIONS. Th Ltdld la HUmarks nd Drown Colored Dream Tripping to the Ks po sitionEnraptured, and the Kffect Muslins and How Mtdi-Tht New hades of Colors Dress Trlmmlari- hstwls-A Fashionable Weddlaff Dreas Pari "Fashions" A General Miscel lany. Paris, June 20. Your fashions correspondent has long ueph honestly euiiesvorinfl to nod a worth? simile for womankind when dressed all in brown and Bisraam I trunk It suitable to ay the lemlnd tlio contemplative of Hurried partridges trotting about tn stubble, nodding their heads at every step srnl fluttering straight to their rendezvous at the Exposition, with that tin mm ak able instinct ot high-flowo birds which leads them to the nrr spot it Is most B?reeable to rot on. Ihelr little tries of surprise and admiration when they pass by the satins, velvets, diamonds, and lanes which all attract attention, are again like tb communications with which the feaiuery tribe honor us. Words can but be poor rendering of some of the pood thinss eon by aa intelligent otverver at that section ot the Champ de Mars reserved tor woman's attire. Here it is that the hatfgbtlext peeress and toe roost ftacioating comiesne like to assemble. Some openly and frankly admire how silk and thread can be transformed Into velvet aud laco, how Indian pebble- Oecorae sapphire and rubies, how yards of gauze can look like curling waves of foam; but oh ! satirists, keep dibtant; for few of the fair sex, whether thi.-y coini from ALhcov, Lis bon, Berlin, or London, can hide the anxious Wish, the ri'iue sieh, the deep look so expres sive ot the torture intlicted by that aslo which larks iu ladies' bo oms, aud called by analysts "desire." "ilepliistopliek-s," in Gounod's Faust, Is the inj personation t the covetous feelings created in woman by tbe eleht ot what Is unat tainable in toilet. Others can arrest tbe curve npon their lips while contemplating all the for bidden magnificence displayed; but these stand as if petrified belore the mute glass stands. It is my duty to desciibe here weekly atl the changes which fashion imposes, and I may not moralize; but If the columns of the New York Herald are ever ahead of every other paper latitude is ever allowed for a serious thought and calm remonstrance. I will, therefore, tell all your readers that the exquisite treasures ex hibited have turned many a woman's brain. It 1b no longer the passive 'to be, or not to bo," it is the ' to have, or not to have." Husbands there are who say "no wonder it should be so," and who plead for their wives' weakness, arguing that the soft pearls of the East, niaenidc'cnt diamonds, chiselled Jewelry, rich tirdues, marvellous embroidery, all the cashmeres, veils, necklaces, cloaks aud drapery aie too costly not to be tempting. But it this is granted, their sisters and daughters should all marry millionaires, and tbe equilibrium of Eu rope would be a less serious consideration than that ot each individual home budget. What if the robes shown a6 covered with all the tinta of the buttetHy an1 gorgeous beauty of the richest created things, can we not simply admire in them tbe progress of Industry and the perfection of manulactunng processes? This tuery will lead me on to so many, that, fearing lest I should positively turn a lecturer, i will torget to mora lize, and simply give the slate of clothing as seen in tbe best circles. Muslins have suddenly made their appearance, but they are quite on the second plane, as Chamberys take tbe lead. Cbamberys may, if they like, out fine muslins ever will be lovely, cool, and comfortable. These costly Cbaru bery canuot be worn on every occasion, whereas in tbe heat of summer an airy otgandle or printed muslin graces a bieakfast table as well as the public walks. It has been a serious affair to make them look well, gored, and cut empire style. The best plan is to have a wide hem, called "false," added on to the bottom circumference, and cioss-cut folds to ornament it: small flounces are also, very pretty ; the wide sash behind of thsame material, whether frilled or edged with lace, is quite sufficient trimming; A kino ot Marie Antiouelte fichu is sometimes made, instead of the loose jacket, lor walking costume. All our new shades are now out; they are -either very gay and brieht, or what 1 should call lender, partaking, in tbe former case, of the gay soubrette, if colors could be persoaided, and of the Quakeress in the latter. To make it more readable, I could as welt say that in our time we have the flaunting demi-monde in but terfly Bhape and the modest nun in subdued keeping. It is true a lady now is both one and the other on the tame day, and looks very charming under tissues on which delicate exo tics, bright birds, masses of foliage, and bro caded groups are artistically worked, or under the faultless fitting dove-iiated silks and fawn:. T TniiAr. nntitfi. mnh ncraliiHt mv will, that dresses are heavily covered with passementerie. Ail our festoons are made to fall down heavily under jet and bead work, crochet, gimp, and large pieces of shiny block glass wb'ch imitates let. me (riiices are verv cumbersome also, being thick twisted cord, on which are strung long jet f tubes end ins with Deals. Lace shawls, both black and white, are not the fashion, but tew ladles can mind wearing their rich (Jhantillvs and deep tiouuceo points. At a wedding which took place at the Made leine this week all tbe lace worn was put on peplutn style, and Marie Antoinette capes, with lone flowing ends behind, were made ot Meoh- lin or Brussels. One of the prettiest was the much admired licht salmon poult de sole, trim med round the bottom with a deep piaic ot tne tame material; a white Alencon circular was worn over this. The bonnets were all fanchons with wreaths. 1 thev are nut on very high on the chignon comb, which necessarily manes mem come aown iow on the forehead, forming a kind of cone or ovramidal aflair in front. As it is called pretty we are obliged to believe it, but the peasantry In Wales wear tbclr coal scuttle sun hats in the tame way, and their fashion has ever been culled barbarous, Gaelic, anything primeval. The fact is there are tew so-called "Paris fashions. " All are worn: every one dresses In comorraity with each particular taste; all depends on caprice. In the same drawing-room are met beauties a la Josephine, a la Sevigne, a 'antique. Borne do not dress at all. It is getting quite a polyglot combination to write a iasnion teller, anu uecp siuuies nave to oe gone mrouu lor the purpose, ait among the Benaissance nanuscrlpts, the Fronde, tbe Regence, and tbe jirecioue. uveryinmg is worn inoian mus- lns and Asiatic tissues. Tbe rapid progress of the Union Pacific Railroad, now building west frcmOniaha, Nebraska, and form ing, with Its western connections, an unbroken line across tbe continent, attracts attention to tbe value of tbe First Mortgage Bonds which the Company now offer tbe public The first question asked by prudent Investors Is, "Are these bonds securer" Next, "Are they a profitable Investment?" To reply tn brief: First. Tbe early completion of the whole great line to thePaciilc la as certain aa any future business event can be. Tbe Government grant of over twenty mil lion acres of land and fifty mllllou dollars in its own bonds practically guarantees It, One-fourth of tbe work Is already done, and tbe track continues to be laid at tbe rate oi two miles a day. Second. TbeUnlon Poclllo Railroad bonds are Issued npon wbat promises to be one of tbe most prontable lines of railroad In the country. For many years it mast be tbe only line connecting tbe Atlantic andPe clfic; and being without competition, it can maintain remunerative rates. Tblrd. 376 miles of this road are finished, and fully equipped with depots , locomotives, cars, etc., and two trains are dally running eaob way, Tbe materials for tbe remaining 141 miles to tbe eastern base of the Rocky Mountains are on band, and It is under con tract to be done In September, Fourth. Tbe net earnings of tbe sections already finished are several times greater than tbe gold In terest upon tbe First Mortgage bonds upon such sec tions, and If not another mile of the road were built, tbe part already completed would not only pay Inte rest and expenses, but be profitable to tbe Company. Filth. Tbe Union Pacific Railroad bonds can be Is sued only as tbe road progresses, and therefore can never be In tbe market unless tney represent a bona fide property. (sixth. Their amount Is strictly limited by law to a sum equal to wbat Is granted by tbe United Slates Govern men t, and for which it takes a second lien as Us security. This amount upon tbe first 617 miles west trom Omaba is only 116,0(0 per mile. Seventh. Tbe fact that the United States Govern ment considers a second lied npon the road a good in vestment, and that some of tue shrewdest railroad builders of the country have already paid In five mil lion dollars upon tbe stock (which Is to them a tblrd Hen), may well inspire confidence in a first lien. Eighth. Although It Is not claimed that there can be any better securities than Governments, tbera are parties who consider a first mortgage upon such a property as this tbe very best security in tbe world, and wbo sell tbelr Governments to reinvest In these bonds, thus securing a greater Interest. Ninth. As tbe Union Pacific Railroad bonds are offered for tbe present at 90 cents on the dollar and accrued Interest, they are the cheapest security tn tbe market, being IB per cent, less than United States stocks. Tenth. At the current rate of premiums on gold they pay OVER KIKE PER CENT. INTEREST. Tbe dally subscriptions are already large, and they will continue to be received In New York by the CONTINENTAL NATIONAL BANK, No. 7 NAS SAU Street, CLARK, DODGE A CO., Bankers, No. SI WALL Street.
