PRINTING IN FRANCE. . viaoi'a Historical 8 ketch Thi Iran rial l'-l .. . . , ., - - ----- p. Ambroise-Firmtn Didot has contributed to io "Paris Guide" an article on Print! in Pirlg, which has general Interest. M. Didot. la tiding ine art or printinir thronfrb. its man tjclssltudes, tells ua that It was Introduced Into "T-l I A I - . . . . mine year 1470 Dy three Hermans, who resorted to that cit at the Invitation of one Guillaumo Fichet, a doctor of theology, and of La Pierre, Prior of the Sorbonne. The books which were first Issued from their press appear to hare been printed in 1470 and 1471, and In the following few years, having removed from the Sorbonne to the Hue St. Jacquci, they executed several works tn Gothic and other characters, at their house, which bore the sign of the 'Gol den Son." In 1478 two ol them seem to have returned to Germany, since on a very fine copy of Virurll the name ol one of them, Ulrich uennir, elands alone, as Is also the case in the con of the most ancient edition of the Breviary i rnrip, in me iiDrary 01 hi. Genevieve, ana in Jie following year Gerlng removed aeatn to a louee belonging to the Borboune, carrying with no u'B Biiru vi ice uuiacn bud. The number of or inters rsDidiT lnoreaspd. b1 we hear of one Antoine VerarJ. who nub- shed a great number ot works in re mark ah It keautlful Gothic character, and after four le- Iiovals, having preserved his feign of St. John pe fcvangellM to the last, died opposite the Rue totre mine, leaving ms Dusiuess 10 his son liar helemy. THRSI REMARKABLE EVENTS. Henri Estienne, whose family name is ro well nown in connection with rate and parlv prtl. Ions, came to Paris from Provence in 1600, and 1 partnership with a German named Wolfgang, nuieu wiiu great care a nunarea sua one iffeient works before his death, in 1520. Dur ig the twenty years of his life in Paris, three markable events In the hlstorv of Drintimr fcok place. The first proof of Roval svmDathv fas received by the printers from Louis Xlf. ho remitted the verv considsrabln lmnnst.fi thich had formerly been exacted. Two years ter. 1615. Francis I sxemnted them from I 1 Hilary service, except in case ot immi ent dancer to the State, and the same King in 1616 annulled the prohibl- ion which the university bad put on the Printing oi the Concordat with Pope Leon X. iVhen Henri fcsttenne died, his widow married printer named Coltnes. who not onlv himself biodnced some very fine editions, but educated his wife's son, Robert Kstienne, to the business, ivuiuu ur iNjqueameu to ui in in idzj, toe very rear which witnessed the burning of Erasmus' nend Louis Berquin in the square of 4,Greve," ltnougb he bad been well received by the kine. who called him his counsellor. Colines had printed twenty-four thousand copies, in those flaja a prodigious number, of the "Coloquia rJiaema," a book which was prohibited by the acuity of Theology, and which the University brbade to.be read or taught in its colleges. NEW TYPE. In 1620 Claude Garamond introduced Roman nd Italian characters, after the designs of the loailtitnl Vonollon tbna r i .Tanann an3 A 1 H klanuce, which have since continued to be most enerally used. In Germany and England so warm was the approval with which the new ype was greeted, mat tne technical name or iaramoud is still applied to type of a particular ize, in which all the Elzevir editions are printed. RELIGIOUS TROUBLES. In the following year, when it Is estimated hat there were in Paris about twenty-four printers, Francis I lorbude the printing or pub- lsning 01 any dook wnicn naa not received the anction or the university and the Faculty of theology, and had not been submitted for the ipprobation of the Provost of Paris. In 1522 itobert Estienne published a Latin translation f tbe New Testament, which gave great offense 0 the Sorbonne. and although he obtained the oval license for a subsequent edition of the bible in the same language, he was at length ompouea to suDtnit to tne authority 01 that in itiation, and engage to print nothing for the uture unless cum bona coram qralia. By this Deans he was enabled to continue in the ex ercise of his occupation, and Sau-val, in his Antiquities of Paris," says that in 1C50 bis siern bf the olive tree was yet to be seen in the Rue lean de ueauvais. in 1533 the 801 bonne pen- toned Francis T, then at Lyons, to abolish rinting altogether, and had it not been tor the renuous opposition of JJu Uellag, Archbishop Paris, and uutuaume Dede, they would cer Inly have obtained their end. RESTRICTIONS. n the following year Francis I issued letters tent whtch entirely prohibited printing, and signed the punishment ot hanging (peine de la krt) to printers, which was, however, refused $e content of Parliament. A month afterwards. e same King, who has been called the Father Restorer of Letters, ordered the Parliament proceed to the election of twenty-four per ms, of whom he himself should choose twelve, ho, having given due security, should alone be lowed to exercise the art ot printing in Paris. lid should be confined themselves, at the same me, to the production ot "boots approved and ecessary tor the public welfare." under pain of irbitrary punishment. Dy way 01 compensation in some sort, t rancia subseauently exempted printers from service ti tbe "Gardes ourgoise,n a policy which was dopted by his successor. Henry II. who had Previously revived toe prohibition on all print ing except such as bad received the sanction of he university. Latterly, nowever, ne snowed imself to be more benevolently disposed to printers, and relieved them of the oppressive iuties to which their work had hitherto been subjected; and in 1666 be ordered that a copy printed on vetium 01 every dook puDiisueu under authority should be sent to the Royal Library. These copies were oeauuiuuy douuo, and it is said that the ordinance under which they were collected was issued on the petition of the celebrated Diane de Poitieis. whose 'armorial bearings may be found emblazoned on Ia great many books ot this period. BETTER PATS. Charles IX" followed in the steps ol his prede cessors. Printing was encouraged by a very favnmhln decree, while on the other hand oue iMftrtin .'Homme, who had published a satire against the Guises, was hung. In spite of all restrictions, tne an connnueu 10 prosper, uu although the faculty of Medicine and the Unl yersity had lost nothing of their ancient intole rance, under Louis XIII a regular censorship wo established, and from the year 1627 printing was freed from all religious surveillance, and whs mpmlv aubiected to a system or trade rules, of which D'Aguesseau made a careful digest in the Oroer of Council ot the zutn reoruary, ins. During the seventeenth ana eignieenta cen tnriua Holland and Switzerland afforJod a re fuge to those authors who for political reason had cause to fear the laws of their own coni.ry, and when tbe stormy days of the Kevol n'ou were over tbe press found itself in possemioo of unfettered liberty, which, however, was some what curtailed under the Consulate, and still further abridged under the Empire. The dis tinction between journals and pamphlets, and works of greater extent, was first made after the Restoration, and although the Republic removed every restriction, under the second Empire a decree was issued which put the press under a regime which it had not known for some considerable time, and which, according to late official announcements, it is expected will l2 considerably modified. , . THE IMPERIAL PRINTING OFFICE. It was under Francis I that a royal printer of Greek was first appointed in the person of Con rad Neobas, who was succeeded by Robert Esti enne. In those times there was, however, no royal press, and the abjve-mentioned printers executed their work with their own type in their own workshops. Louis illl caused an atelier for printing to be set up in the Louvre, under tbe name of L'Imprlmcrie Kovale, and the new establishment was greatly improved under Loula XIV, and a type foundry was added to it by Loiila XV. Tbe name has been changed several times. According to the will ol cxlatlug governments, THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPII PHILADELPHIA, TUESDAY, it has been "National" or "Republican. " The quartPis in tbe Louvre were given up for the Hotel de Penthierrp, tenanted at the present time by the Bunk of France, and the establish ment, which, sincel852, has become "Imperial," now occupies the Palais Cardinal, in the princi pal court 01 wnicn is a statue ot uuttenocrg, by David d'Ang ers. It undertakes to print official documents, and to give assistance when autho rized to do so, in the production of works of private individuals. It possesses an admirable selection ot type for oriental characters. The "Palais l animal" was called at one time the Palais de Strasbourg by the bishop of that place, Gaston de Rohan, who built It. When the bishop became "His Eminence" he changed the name, and gave it that ol the Palais Cardinal, which It baa retained ever since.
