) THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, MONDAY, JULY 1, 18G7. J- i A It 3 .1. r . f r C1F1C RAILROAD. Travel -Tt JuUiborc, j .nw announcpi the completion -ilesburg, 376 mites from Omaha. nals are nearly all on the gtouud I , . track to the base of the Rocky Moun- 'ZV1 ' miles lurther by beptcrober next. This w certainly vry rnpid woil, but mtelll f ent correspondents gay it fs well done.and that tli road Is well equipped; its depots and sta tion are of brick and stone, and its locomo tives and cars of the best. The United States Commissioners are alo compelled to testify that It is In all resppc: a Crst-cla-a road, betore tho Government will accept it. 1'h'e business of this road is already surprising. The thousands of teams that once spent a summer in toiling over the prairies have transferred their loads to the Tall-track, and by antumu the locomotive will be at the base oi the Rocky Mountains. The Edi tor of Harper's Weekly remarks that, "When the Union PrcIUc Is completed, all other lines of ' railway will become, to a certain extent. Its feed ers. Alonn its entire route over the great Plains lateral branches will be constructed, which will pour into it their wavside contributions to an extent that cannot to-day bo approximately estimated. 'Already, with less than one-third of its length complete, it is earn in? several times its operating expenses, as otlicially seated. Such success Is without precedent. When it reaches the already populous gold regions of Montana, Idaho, and Nevada, the ireight to and from thote points a'one is likely to be almost fabu lous. And population follows the road as it extends. A town or village marks each stage of its progress. Who can calculate the quantity of way freight that the road is destined to carry for these rising communities? Who, indeed, ' ca estimate the passenger traffic alone ? When hundreds of thousands of persons, with their faces towards the Went, have tramped over tho Plains at the risk oi their scalps, how many Jicisdventure will ride, when they can make the ourney with safety in a low days f But a short time will elapse before the demands of trade will call for a Becond track, to be used exclu sively as a freight road, over which an endless line of elowly moving vans shall continu ously pass, leaving the other track for the use ol impatient passengers only." Our readers will perceive, by reference to the Company's advertisement, that it offers its First Mortgage Bonds, paying 6 per cent, interest ia f old to subscribers, at ninety ceots on the dol ar. These bonds are a first lien upon the road, and are limited in amount to $16,000 to the mite, ; The Company slate their net earnlnes for the ; month of May, while only two hundred and ninety miles oi the road were in operation, at $261,782 a sum which, after deducting ope rating expenses, Is several times the interest on the bonds they are by law permitted to issue ; upon it. If the earnings are so large upon the , way business, what may we not reasonably ex pect when the connection is made in 1870 with the Pacific Coast ! We can see no reason why the First Mori gage Bonds of such, a road are not . a safe security, and they are 15 per cent, cheaper than Government bonds at the market rate. Subscriptions are already larire, and are received , by banks' and bankers generally throughout the country. j CITY INTELLIGENCE.
