FIRE AND BURGLAR PROOFSAFES
FjjonE ADOUT
LILLIE'S CHILLED-IRON SAFES
IMPORTANT FACTS
WIII4.lt TIIE rEOPtE KIIOUL,I
"MAKE A NOTE O F."
FACT I.-LILLTE'B CHILLED-IRON BAFES
have been largely Introduced fur the last twelve
years, and sold to thOBe having the largest amount of
valuables, as the best and n.oftt thoroughly Burglar
Proof Safe; and, up to the last three years, ft has been
as rare to bear ol one ol Llllle's Sales having been
robhtd by burglnrs. as to see or hear ot a white
blackbird or a while elephant.
Fact II. It Is notorious that the profession of the
burglar has advanced at a rapid pace within the last
eight years, and vi hat was thoroughly burglar-proof
then Is not so now, which accounts for the fact that
within the last three years very few of Llllle's
Bales have been robbed, and the secret anonymous
circulars distributed by other safe-makers lat
terly, showing awj frw cases on'v, Is theslrongnst
evidence that bi t a very small number have been
robbed to this time, notwithstanding the large num
ber in use, and the amount at stake It successful.
Fact III. There are two, and only two, general
and leading prlncldles Upon which all burglar-proof
sales are coustrueted. The one is pouring liquid
Iron between and around bars of wrought ireu, hard
ened slreel, or auy proper combination of metals.
This principle la ad pled by Llllle, In the Chllled
Iron Safe, aud covered aud controlled by his letters
patent.
The other Is made np ol layers of plates, of dlflerent
metals, held together by bolls or rivets, or both. To
this principle there are various objections: The
cost Is double. The wrought Iron plaice, which are
the strength of the sale, are outside, and are operated
upon by the whole catalogue ol burglars' tools. The
bolis or rivets are easily lorced by suitable tools,
with or without powder, and cannot be sustained.
2ie former principle, adopted by Little, avoids all
these objections, can be niade any thickness, and
withstand any amount of resistance required; avoids
the rivets, bolts, etc; has no wrought iron outside to
be operated upon by burglars' Implements.
' Fact IV. Mr. Llllle, the Patentee, ao soon as he
learned that it was possible with the modern lm-
firoved tools lor burglars to grind through chilled
ron or hardened ktttl, btgan experimenting to avoid
the dlfliculiy, and after much labor and expeuso be
has perfected a system lor chilling Iron and combin
ing metals that Is eutiiely piool against the burglar's
drill, or any other of bis tools, even the wedge, war
ranted to stand the hardest test practicable for any
burglar to make. As a proof of his success, the fol
lowing rertiticate Is now offered lrom the Novelty
Works.NewVork:
Oyrics Novbltt Iron Works.
Nkw Yoiik, 18th December, 1864,
Ifrttrt. LeuHt LUlte & tion.
Gkmtlkmkm: We have subjected the sample of
Chilled Iron yon furnished us to the most severe teits
(as regards dillllog through It) that we could bring to
bear upon It. and without success.
It Is our opinion that it can only be penetrated by
the Ube of a large number of drills, and the expendi
ture of much power, with days of time.
And we think It Impossible lor a burglar, wltb his
time aud power, to penetrate it at all.
Youis truly,
IraaoV. Holmes. Superintendent.
Lyman G. 11 all, Foreman.
And the following extensive Iron manufacturers In
Philadelphia, Boston, and Chicago, alter the mo.t
thorough tests, rind the result to be substantially the
same.
Aud their principal Iron Workers so certify:
Messrs. Merrick fc Son, Southwark Foundry, Phila
delphia. The Flnklev A Williams Works, Boston, Mass,
The Union Foundry and the Northwestern Foun
dry, Chicago, 111.
Fact V. The proposition made the public hereto
fore Is now renewed : I will furnish Sates .or Vault
Boors, of same size and capacity ot other best makers,
and at one-third less price; and the same may be
tested when linisbtd, and I will furnish the man to
test the work of any other maker, and he shall fur
nish the roan to test my work ; aud the party so order
nig may accept the work which stands the most re
slbiauce.lu any way or manner practicable for a burglar
to work.
Fact VI. I wonld now say to any of the owners ol
Lillle's Safes, that, in view of the preceding facts, If
they feel the need of additional security, I will ex
change with them, on lair terms, giving them all the
lute improvements, and the incteased security, which
Is claimed to be beyond the reach of Burglars, until
some new system Bhall be developed in the worklug
ol Iron, which would now seem hardly possible.
Fact Vii. It Is true that the Sheet-Iron or common
Sate, as now made, under ordinary circumstances
(and when not crushed by the lull ot walls or limbers)
usually saves the written matter, but If the fire la se
vere it has to be copied, tor the Ink will soon lade out;
besides, the sale Is twisted up aud useless.
It Is equally true that the C'hllled-lron Safe saves
tbewrllteu matter In a perlect state, that It does uot
lade out or require copying, and that the sale Itself
Is ready for limber use. Any number of trials iu
tires, certified to, prove these lads, and If auy of the
sale venders who are distributing secret, anonymous
circulars to injure the reputation ol LILLIK'S SAFK,
are not satisfied with these statements, ihey can have
the opportunity ol tt-bltug by lire oue of their own
Safes wlih LILLIB'S, on equal terms, whenever
they so oectue.
I act VIII. in answer to the story circulated by
Interested parties, that Llllle's Sale had guue up, aud
had ruined Llllle. etc.. 1 would buy that at uu lime in
the last two years could Llllle t Son half supply the
demand lot Saius, and were under the necessity of
lormiug a large stock company, with a very large
capital, to meet the demand; aud Mr. Lewis Lulie.Sr.,
is now the president ol that company, which is located
ou the Lelawaie, In Pennsylvania, Mear K.iaion, aud
Is ihe largest Safe Works probably lu existence, aud
will be able to supply all uemauds for Sales, Locks,
Chllled-lron Vaults, etc.
In conclusion. I beg to call the attention of my
patrons aud fi lends, and the public, to the facts here
preaeiiteu, and to say that I am very thanklul lor
past lavors, and that 1 am prepaieu to lurniHii
