The most perfect arrangements have been
made by the navy to Insure the success of tne
regatta. The river will be cleared of boils.
The Liberty Cornet Band will be present at
eaoh day's race, and play from 4 nntll 6 o'clock.
Thb Numerous Friejtdi of thb Soldiers'
orphans will be gratified to hear that, notwith
standing the extreme dullness now prevailing
lu most branches ot business, the onlldren lu
the Homestead at Gettysburg are not forgotten.
Bubscrlptions of mouey, flour, sugar, crackers,
soap, coal, etc. etc., are being pretty freely
made. The agent has informed us that Messrs.
Evans & Watsou, of No. 24 South Seventh
Street, 1'hlladelphia, have just subscribed a
fire-proof safe lor the use of the Homestead.
This proteotorof tho valuable documents con
nested with the Institution was much needed.
It is, however, exceedingly trying to the feel
ings of those coucerued to be compelled to
reiuse the numerous applications now seeking
for admission (some very distressing cases have
of late presented themselves); but until mean
enough to enlarge the premises are placed in
the Treasurer's bands, not one orphan more can
be sdmiited.
Lists of donations will soon again be pub
lished. Meantime let some others of noble
mind come to the timely aid of those who are
earnestly desirous of carrying out this excel
lent design.

to Ukaih.-A case has Just come to our notice
that will afford a good chance for the society to
l'reveut Cruelty to Animals to exercise them
selves upon. Lust Mouday DlgUt, a person
giving bis name as George Lay ton, residing at
Bustleton, hired a horse and carriage of Mr.
John M. Stevens, the keeper of a livery stable
at the ' Seven Stars" Hotel, In Krankford. He
then amused himself by driving nt full speed
back and forth between Krankford and Bustle
ton nntll a very late hour, when the horse aud
carriage were returned to Mr. Ht evens' stables.
The horse was In a dreadful condition, and was
swollen in great welts where It had been beaten,
and could neither eat nor drluk.it was so ex
hausted. This morning it died from the effects
of Layton's brutal usage. When the latter went
out with the team he took a new whip. When
be came back the whip had been used with
such fiendish energy upon the horse that It was
broken to pieces. Lay ton was arrested and
taken before Alderman Holmes. Mr. Stevens,
the owner of the Worse, which was valued at
$200, appeared against blm, and testified to the
condition in which the horse was brought back
to the stable. Lay ton was held In 8800 bail to
answer at Court the charge of cruelty to an
animal.
Akotheb Disgraceful Riot. The "war
spirit' appears to exert a powerful influence
over our firemen, Judging from the number of
disgraceful fights that constantly occur. The
last took place last evening about 6 o'clock.
Whilst the Weccacoe and the Southwark Eu
glnes were going to or returning from afire
they raced their apparatus, until they got
Within a short distance of Walnut, upon Fifth
Street. When there they stopped, and amused
themselves with getting np a first-clans fight.
Fists, brickbats, spanners, etc , were freely used
over each other's heads, aud a tin Irs were rapidly
assuming a serious turn, when Lieutenant
Goldy and a squad of policemen appeared upon
the scene, aud dispersed the oombatants. .Two
men were arrested, one of whom, giving the
name of S. J. Klwell, was held In tfoOO ball by
Alderman Butler, to answer the charge of riot
ing. Several men were hurt severely, but none
seriously, owing to the timely appearance of
the police.
Selling Liquor on Sunday. Margaret
Moore, who keeps a drinking saloon In fine
treet. near Elizabeth, in Frankford. was
arrested on Sunday morning, upon a charge of
selling liquor contrary to luw. About & o ciock.
Bunday morning an officer discovered a young
lad In a gross state of intoxication, and at the
same time beard the sounds of voices In the
bar-room, as if a party were In there drinking,
lie went awav. and getting assistance returned.
when the men who had been in the bar-room
bad gone Into the kitchen. They arrested Mrs.
Jdoore, aud those who were In her place at the
time acknowledged before Alderman Holmes,
at the hearing, that they had dru ok liquor after
12 o'clock Saturday night. Mrs. Moore was held
In $400 bail to answer the charge of selling
liqur on Sundays, and also selling liquor to
minor.

Albany, June 6. The preliminary examina
tion ol (ieorge W. Cole, charged with the shoot
ing of Luther Harris illscock, a member of the
Constitutional Convention, atHtanwlx llall.oir
tlie evening of Tuesday, the 4th of Juno, was
commenced this luormur at 10 o'clock, at ttia
Jail in this city, before the i'ollco Magistrate,
Mr. 8. 11. H. rarsons, aided by Mr. John M.
Bailey, Assistant District Attorney. No Jury,
was empanelled.
The examination took place in the private
ofllce of the Jailor or sbeiiff, a small room, con
taming a writing table and desk, a bookcaie
with a couple of dozen law books, a lounge,
witter cooler, and some chairs. The prisoner
occupied a chair beside the table, aud bis coun
sel, Mr. William J. Had ley, soon eniered aud
took a seat by bis Mile. The magistrate and
AsHistunt District Attorney sitt at the table and
1 educed the evidence to writing.
Ucorge W. Cole, the prisoner, strikes one, at
first siKht, as being a man of some thirty-five
years of age, with a frame betokening st rength
and activity, and an expression of couiiteuunce
indicating quiet resoluteness ruthtr than a vio
lent or cruel disposition. He Is some five feet
nine inches in height. His hair is biaok,or dark
brown, his eyebrows well marked, bis noe
regularly siraieht, and his face closely shaven,
wilb the exception of a short black moustache.

man, who is placed by circumstances la a
dangerous position, which he deems lie could
not well bave avoided. From some acquaint
ances who stepped up aud shook hands with

wore a suck coat and pants of thick grey woollen

the Constitutional Convention; 1 board at the

blood out ot bis mouth: be was apparently alive
or breathing at that lime; I asked if a physician
or surgeon had been sent for; I was answered .

soon: very soon he made bis appearance; 1 did not
know bim; be was tbe same as was sworn before the
Coroner (Dr. Havens, I believe; they called for a
Btreicher, and placed Mr Hiscock on It; they were
