-ft CITY INTELLIGENCE. Iem ADDITIONAL LOCAL ITIU) OUTBID PA4BS. A Female Mariner. A claim for wages is made jestciday before United Btates Corn mvBloner 8crecant b? one Albert Gardiner, of the crew of the barque Powhatan, wliicr. recently arrived bore from Bairua. The said Albert shipped at New Vork as steward, but alter the vessel was out some days, complaint was made of the cookinar, and Albert was turned out of the galley and sunt to the fore CHBtle to perform ordinary seaman's duty. The claim was retloted on the ground that Albert did not know how to perform seaman's any more than steward's nuty. The novel part of the affair was this: The so-called Albert Gardner was said to be a woman by the Captain and some of the oilier oflicera of the ship, and the appearance 01 the claimant was in a measure calculated to strengthen that declaration. There was a smoothness of the face and a demeanor which belongs to the fair sex; yet masculine features and figure, and a dress partaking of a sailor' rig, gave to the elalmant much the appearance of a man. Albert was silent on the subject, and did not appear to be at all troubled about it. The claim lor wages was allowed, but not to the full amount aeked for. Tub Tolls in thb Twehtikth Ward. Coun cils, at their last meeting, passed an ordinance increasing the number of election divisions in tne Twentieth Ward, and fixing the place of holding rhe elections, l'tao boucea heretofore used in the First, Second, Third, Fourth, Filth, Sixth, Seventh, Kieventh, Twelfth, Thirteenth, and fourteenth Divisions have been retained. A Sad Fatality Two Little Girls Drowhed. A sad accident happened yesterday afternoon at Huntingdon street, where it crosses Gunner's run, in the Eighteenth Ward. While a number of children were returning from school, and crossing the bridge at Huntlugdon street, two ot them, named Jane Conway and Margaret Dunn, both about eight years of aiie, fell into Gunner's run, and were drowned. The bodies were soon afterwards recovered, and the Coroner sent for to hold an inquest. Jane Conway resided at No. 1231 Salmon street, and Mary Dunn at No. 1021 Anthracite street. The occurrence caused ,much excitement in the neighborhood. Obituary Da. William Shipper. One of the oldest and most respected medical practitioners- of Philadelphia died yesterday, at his residence in this city. No. 1205 Walnut street. For many years Dr. Shippen has held a lending position in the meaical profession, and has been identified with a number ot the most important innovations in medical t-cionce. He belonged to one ot the old-time Philadelphia families, whoae name is familiar to the great majority of our citizens. He was a man ot varied acquire- merits and considerable talent, and died at the ripe old age of 75 years, after a useful and well- ' spent life. A Fall in Which the Pdblic is Interested. The public will be delighted to hear that the general decline in breadotutfs was continued in the Western markets yesterday. In Chicago flour fell from 60 cents to $1 per barrel; wheat from 16 to 20 cents per bushel ; corn, 3 to 4 cents Ser bushel; rye, 16 to 20 cents Those who retail our and meal in this city would do well to make a note of the declining market, and bring down their prices also. Thb Results of Successful Organ-Grinding. Within a few weeks street musicians have largely increased, and an attempt is being made ' to enforce a police order In respect to them. Yesterday one of the number (a hand organist) was arrested, and upon his beitg taken to the Second District Station was searched. In a belt around him be had in Trea-ury bills the sum of live thousand five hundred dollars. Good Meetings to be Resumed. The meet ings lor the improvement ot newsboys, boot blacks, and other street boys, will be re sumed at the old Quarter Sessions Court Room on Sunday alteration next. It is believed they were attended with benefit when held last j ear. . Promising. The coming wheat crop will probably be among the largest ever harvested in ineee pans, n is me opinion oi experieuceu farmers of neighboring counties that new wheat, if the crop proves to be as good as is now pro mised, will be sold as low as one dollar and a half the bushel. The best wheat is now quoted at the bushel. Not Subtained. The charge of conspiracy preferred against A. B.'Sloanaker and Wilson iiuckby, published the 24th ultimo, has been ignored by the Grand Jury. AMUSEMENTS. Singular Soknic Effects. The management of the scenery and machinery at the New Cnes " nut Street Theatre last night, exhibited to , a wonderful degree the perteciion to which scenic in small ttungs has brought the art of science ellcct. Inlone act we have an immense aquarium filled with running, spurting aqua pura, in which, apparently, lovely young ladies dressed in a very scanty manner swim about like the mermaids they are intended to repre sent. In another act we have. a representation of a mountain ol fire belching forth a sea of " golden lava, produced by the use ol Greek fire, lime, and magnesium lights of every hue. These are all very beautuul and striking tri umphs ot stage art; but the final scene far eclipbes those we have noticed, for in this all of the effects of the others are marvellously and artistically blended, and the scene is daszlingly magnificent. . One of the great features of the new play ' called Cendritlon, is that there is a show scene, ' such as we have attempted to describe, in each act. So that the beholder parses through the evening from a bower of beauty into an Lantern ; Idea of the "good place," represented in a most ' gorgeous manner. ; Tne crand Paribian ballet appearing In Cm drMlon is so met hinsr new to Philadelphia, and .the ailegros and allegretloa of the Uanseusea ' premierts are artistic, graceful, and pleating. . The dramatic parts of Vendriton are confided ' to good bands at the New Cbesnut Street ' Theatre, aud the dresses worn by Miss Josic OrlOD, Miss Annie Ward, Miss Julia Daly, and Mrs. Thayer, are truly mueruiocent. In a word, tendtlUon is as good as The Black Crook in all that we could wish; but it Is carefully arrauged bo that nothing can be said or seen to shock the feelings ot the most fastidious. "Littlb Boy Blub" at the Arch opens with a scathinir, but very funny critique, "all in rbjnie," giving the history of our last LegUla , ture and its doings. This is, no doubt, the work of Mr. K. H. Craig. Mr. Fox and his brother, the poor Pantaloons are very funny in their parts, and Mies Julia lirowne make a pretty and acceptable "lat aud lair" Columbine. She is one of the substantial lalnes, not alluded to by Shakespeare. Go aud see Fox's new panto mime. To-morrow (Friday) Mr. U. L. Fox will take his first benefit.
