GRAND CONVOCATION OP DEAD BEETS AND OTHER VEGETABLES. "RUSTY-COATS" AND " MAI DEN EL USHES" ON EXHIBITION. Last Wednesday evening was the time fixed lor the opening of the new Horticultural Hall, at the corner of Broad and Wostmoreland fctreets. At the time of our visit the building could be seen at a good advantage. THE ORNAMENTAL ENTRANCE is certainly appropriate and chaste. Mr. Man- glewurtzel, the architect, "laid himself out on the ornaments," so we are told by one of the Committee, and we thought we could discover something that looked like the gentleman Ctuck in tho doorway as we went up the steps. The decorations of the Hall were elaborate and pleasing. When filled with the audience the decorations show off at a great advantage. On one hand met your eye a broad expanse of VERDANT NJUN8, and on the other ro3e a background of the purple peaks of the Andes, interspersed with rushing waterfalls and flowering plateaus. At the base of the mountains the head-waters of great rivers are seen winding their way through an undulating country back behind the refreshment stand. At the point where the painted stream touches the foreground, Will be introduced A COUPLE OF GENUINE WATERFALLS from the real Schuylkill, such as are seen every afternoon around Fairmouut Basin. On either side of this scene is tastefully arranged an umbrella stand and an iron dog. f A COLLECTION OF EVERGREENS extend all around the room, extending from ne end to the other, and reaching in their Terdancy from the floor to the ceiling. At each aide of the stage, on the main floor t! tie kail, ia constructed a "right" and "left" iMlC mm J r 1 I lifts Bower, and tho suit la Hearts and Diamonds, as it always is, and always will be. (N. B. Those whose motto is "No Cards," are not expend to understand this delicate joke on the part of the architect.) Beginning with these Bowers, and extending the whole length of the hall, is a range of Booths and Clarkes, with a display of fancy articles in general. The numerous niches In the wall, probably occasioned by the builder running out of stone and mortar, is filled in with urns and flowers. There is sufficient room in the Hall for the Society to urn thoir reputation. In the centre of the Hall a large iron foun tain has been erected, and when the fountain is at work it will be so easy and graceful in appearance that people will think it is only a playing. The mottoes around the room were both striking and appropriate. Among them there were such as "In Onions there is strength," and "You may cry Teas I Teas I but there is no Peas." This was over the refreshment stand. And "Even gold ia valued according to its Carrots," and many others in this style, which showed considerable taste ou the part of the' ladies who got up the mottoes on this occasion. At one end of the Hall was a model of the ORKilNAL VEGETARIANS, whose existence, as a class, has done so much to forward the Society and create an interest in its doings. These models, we were told, were taken from life before they were full grown, and should not have been taken so early. They were in the habit, when alive, of laying in a hot bed in winter time, and never thought of springing up while it was cold. In addition to these there was a model of a Bat and a Ball caught by a gentleman of this city on the fly. The bat is certainly a curious specimen of the species, and we think the Academy of Natural Sciences ought to possess it. Some Firemen's equipments were there also on ex hibition, and the sad question continually occurs, on looking at them, "Where are the b'hoys that used to fill and fight in them?" Like the red Inj un of the forest, the tribe of the fire ingine savage is fast passing away I Repairing to the banqueting-room, we were regaled by an address by D. Rod Kneeking, Esq., S. P. (some punkins), the President of the Society. TUB PRESIDENT'S PIECE. The pleasing duty has been assigned to me of congratulating you on the completion of the building, which at one time looked so dark on account of the strike among the masons, and in the name of this Society, to bid you a hearty welcome, such as have paid for their tickets, within its spacious and thick-set walls. That this hall was greatly needed to occupy this lot, the removed ash-heap and departed remains of many a dead cat and dog fully testify, and to erect a beautiful building like this on this piece of ground is surely causing the Wilderness to blossom like the Peony. A voice suggested "The Rose 1" The Presi dent said "No, " he would stick to his first remark; that if he listened to suggestions he would forget his speech, and get off. For forty long years no longer, however, he was happy to say, for the interest of the So ciety, than any other forty years this useful Society has been running around like a dog without a muzzle iu dog days (great cheer ing) in search of a proper place to lay down and blow (cries of "Joke I Joke I") and now he was nappy to say that they had found a place where they could not only "blow," but keep in "full bloom." Here an unruly boy shouted out, "And go to seed." (Laughter.) The President said, very good naturedly, "That that boy must be pruned, he was branching out too rapidly." (Laughter.) For forty long years, continued the Presi dent, this Society has had no permanent loca tion or abode, but has been like the Wander ing Jew. It has been grafted on and rooted out of every hall in this city, until now we are transplanted on this spot, and we are very glad to think we have come up bo well this spring. (Cheers.) For forty long years, continued the Presi dent, has it rained rent and other bills innu merable on our poor Ark, almost swamping our craft, until now we are landed safely to night on our own Ararat. (Cheers.) For forty long years we have wandered through this desert of a city, with no abiding place, with nothing to eat or drink but the Manna and Water of our Annual Exhibitions. until we have now arrived at this promised land, which your own eyes see to-night over running with the milk and honey of hu manity. (Great laughter, and sensation among tue taaies.) For forty long years here the gong sounded for supper, when the speaker made a very snort space oi time out of his forty years, and in about forty wiuks, or, aB our agricultural neighbor expressed it, in about forty shakes of, a sheep's tail, he was at the head of the supper table enjoying the benefit of not being a wanderer now. The opening was certainly very satisfactory to every one, and the flowers evidently on joyed it, as they had not shut when our re porter left. We can only close our notice by repeating the motto over the Speaker's chair, which is doubly appropriate to us who Bee sights on "deed-beet" tickets: NKVKJi LOOK AT A GIFT H0RHK-BAP1SU WITH XOVB JdOVXU."
