THE liAUY. BY CORA MAT. "Did you everl The dear little thing! Isn't ltabeaatyt What a lovely robe; and what a magnificent blanket! And only ea thlg white merino ooverlot so daintily embroidered ! Why Nellie, how In the world did you ever got up auch an elegant wardrobe T" exclaimed a bevy of Indies who bad called to see the new baby and lt young mother. 4,My fairy did It all." "Your fairy; pray, where do you keep it? It must be a wonderful one to perform such won dors as these." "And so It is a wonderful fairy; tireless, faith ful, and true; relieving me of a grievous burden of care, and doing Its work so deftly, so perfeot, and complete In every respect, that I am lost In BurprlBO and delight whenever I think of It." By this time one of the ladles bad the baby In her arms, and another, wliile professedly ad miring the new comer, aud discussing the im portant question as to whether the little pink face, with Its bit of a tnrn-up nose and nonde script eyes, resembled Its father and mother, was in reality examining the dainty robe and skirts, aud the elegant blanket, with its rich embroidery, so different from anything she had ever seen before, that she at last said: "You have not yet told us the name of your fairy. I know, of course, tnat this beautiful stitching was done by a Sewing Machine, but I cannot believe a machine was ever' roado that would embroider like this." "My fairy is a 'Orover A Baker Sewing Ma chine,' and it did embroider all these things and many more. Would you like to see them ?" The lady opened several drawers where baby's Tvardrobe was arranged In charming order, and the friends gathered around, as she took out the;daluty garments, and showed the rows of tiny tucks and rulll,n, and the beautiful em broidery, all doue by lier wonderful fairy. Their delight was unbounded. To be sure, they bad often beard that the Urover 4 Baker Machine would embroider, but they had never happened to see any of i before, and had not thought It could be anything very nice. The baby was quite forgotten; but what baby ever allowed people to ignore Its presence for any length of time ? Not this one certainly; for It very soon proved that It had langs and a voice, and the ladles remembered that they had already stayed too long, and made their adleux to mother and child, and went away with their ldeasof the capabilities of a Grover and Baker Sewing Machine very materially improved. The agent of thut machine bad several new orders the next day, but he never knew thut he owed them to "thai blessed baby." CITY INTELLIGENCE. Connoisseurs Interested in the pi caress of American art. will bo pleased to learn that a picture oy J. K. Galvarj, of this city Is now on exhibition at Earle's Gallery, Chen nut street, above Eighth. It is a genre painting of medium slzo, and has for subject the " Wood land Spring," representing a lady seated on a white horse, halting near a rivulet; two lit tle children, who have apparently Just bauded her a cup of water, regard the unusual visitor of tbe woods with looks of awe and astonish ment. The grouping and composition are most pleasing, while tlie surrounding landscape Is excellently rendered; but the chief charm of the work is the arrangement of the light aud shade, which is so beautifully treated that a fine effect of ensemble is the result. We do not Intend to enter into a long description of the beauties that distinguish this particular painting, but limit our remarks by advising all amateurs to form tr.elr own opinion of this exquisite pro duction from a personal examination.
