t THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, TUESDAY, MAY 7, 18G7. UN ETA. Tincla In the narao of a Me on the Island of Riigcn, In the Baltic. Tradition relates tint a city mood here In old time, which Bunk beneath the waters. Faintly from the lake Ht twilight Btealinc Hounds of evening bells float in the air; Solemn echoes of the church-bells calui', rar down in the sunken city there. " Sometimes, at no slated day or hour, (lazing iu the waters, you will see Glitter tug turrets, or a ruined tower, Turned to gold by some strange alchemy. Soon It disappears but thorp Is a story That ODee seen It never Is foreot And the fluhcrnian, lured by its plory, Haunts forever tbe enchanted spot. Ileedles? of dark rocks that have no pity, With his last despairing pap for breutu, "One more glinipfo," he cries, "ot that bright city !" And drifts onward on ward to his death. Gently from my heart at twilight stealing, Olden memories seem to rill the air: Seem line silver bells, so soilly praline, Far down in the past I've buried there. Sometimes in my dreams alas I dreams only Do I see the 1'ast reflected there. Waking, all the Present seems so lonely; Dreaming, all the Pust so 9tranffely fair. So your busy Present cannot claim me; For 1 live within uit o n sad heart, Tho us li the careless and the tnougntloss blame me, Yet 1 t lioosc for aye to walk apart. THE FIRST SEWING MACHINE, It is a little thing, that fir.-t machine, wnieh goes into a box of tUo capacity ot about a cubic foot and a half. Every contrivance in it has beeu since improved, and new uevices have been added; but no successful sewing machine lias ever been made, of all tue seven hundred thousand now iu exigence, which does not contain some of the essential devices of this first attempt. We make this assertion without hesitation or reserve, becauie it is, we believe, the one point upon which all the great makers are agreed. Judicial decisions have repeatealy affirmed it. Like all the other inventors, Mr. Howe found that when he had completed his machine his difficulties had but begun. Alter he had brought the machine to the point of making, a few stitches, ho went to Boston one day to get a tailor to come to Cambridge and arrange some cloth fur tewing, aud give bis opinion as to the qual.ty ot the worx done by the machine. The comrades ot the mau to whom he first applied dissuaded him lrom eolug, alleging that a sew ing machine, it it worked well, must neeessurily reduce the whole fraternity of tailors to beg gary; and this pioved to be the unchangeable conviction of the tailors tor the next ten years. It is probable that the macnines trt made would have been destroyed by violence, but lor ttnotner Used opiuion ot the tailors, which was, that no machine could be iiiaJu tiiat would really answer the purpose. It eeems 6trangeuow that the tailors of Bos ton could have persisted so long in sueh an opinion, for Mr. Howe, a few weeks after he tad finished bis first modfl, pave them an opportunity to see what it could do. He placed his little engine In one of the rooms of the Quiucy Hall Clothing Manufactory, aud, seat ing bnueU before it, oilertd to eew up any KPnl that mtliht H hrnmrhf tn Yttm Una J unbelieving tailor a'ter another brought a gar ment, ana saw ii9 long seams sewca periectly, at the rate of two hundred aud titty stitches a minute, which was about seven timed as fast as the work could be done by hand. For two weeks he sat there daily, and sewed ud seams for all who chose to bring them to him. He am use J niniseii, at intervals, in executing rows cl ornamental stitching, and be showeu the strength of the machine by sewing the thick Jilaited bkirts of irock coats to the bodies. At aht, he challenged hve of the swiftest seam stresses in the establishment to sew a race with the machine. Tsn seams of equal length were prepared lor sewing, hve of which were lai 1 by the machine, and the other hve given to the gills. The eentleman who held the watch, and who was to decide the wager, testified, upon oath, that the hve girls were the fastest sewers that could be found, aud that they sewed "as fast as they could much tater ttittn they were .in the habit ot sewing" latter than they could have kept on for au hour. Nevertheless, Mr. Howe finished his five seams a little sooner than the girls finished their live; and the umpire, who was himself a tailor, has sworn that "the work done on the machine was the neatest and Btrongest." Upon readirg testimony like this, we wonder that manufacturers did not insuutly set Mr. Howe at work making sewing machines. Not one was ordered. N'-it a tailor encouraged him by word or deed. Some objected that the ma chine did not make tue whole garment. Others dreaded to eucounier the tierce opposition of the journeymen. Others ready thouuht it would bee par all hand sewers, and rciruiued trom uiue it ou principle. Other admitted the utility of the machine and the excellence of the work done by it, but, said they, "we are doing well as we are, and fear to make such a change." The great cost of the machine was a most serious obstacle to its introduction. James Parlon, in M anltc Monthly for Man. PUNCH. PliOM THE GLliMAN OF SCHILLER.
